Tasted the complete elements series with my friend Falnor, april 2018.

Fire, Water, Metal, Wood, Earth, with the whiskies combined... i am captain planet?
    • Nose
      65 65
Alcohol, glue, stomach acid, rotting malt biscuits, apples and pears... there seems to be something off here...
    • Taste
      60 60
auch... my jaw is cramping... what is this? 2nd sips are better, but still sour, was there something off with this sample?
    • Finish
      72 72
medium long and not as bad as the taste... but still astringent

Meh... with coke on the rocks and it might make it more palpable
    • Nose
Eye watering punch of alcohol and feint spirits mixed with artificial caramel and nail polish
    • Taste
Even worse than I expected no comments
    • Finish
      A complete failure

  5. Cubey666 scored this whisky 66 points Connoisseur

    According to the bottle:

Wood - FRENCH, AMERICAN & HUNGARIAN OAK
Nose –Complex and round, oaky spices with a warming toasted undertone.
Taste –Brown sugar, orange peel, soft vanilla and oaky spice; like a perfectly balanced old fashioned.
Finish –Long and round with rich spice

  6. Totoro scored this whisky 80 points Connoisseur

Interesting, I'll give you that. Next to no finish, though.

If you're in the market for a European, tannin-rich, non-sherry oak delivery system, I'd advise you to seek out the Glenlivet 15 "French Oak" at half the price.

  7. Whiskywobbler scored this whisky 83 points Expert Senior

Not overly complex, but friendly fruity with pleasant wood spices in the development and a long finish.

Worst part of all the Five Virtues. I really didn't like this one and also not a fan of young Tomatin.
    • Nose
Bold start with strong alcohol and glue scent. Pretty feisty for just 46%. Malted barley, strong spicy beer or like IPA's. Sour apples and pears not all to sweet or fresh. It noses like a bad spirit.
    • Taste
On the palate far less malt, grains or beer. Chewing gum, slightly chemical. Candy that turns somewhat into creamy vanilla.
    • Finish
Very short and not that great

  10. Dre73 scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

Pleasant whisky, especially smell very tasty
    • Nose
Floral, vanilla, very sweet and fresh, caramel. Chocolate too, and something like yellow rice! Seems similar in smell to those distillates of grape remains, grappa, armagnac
    • Taste
Light peppers, sweet caramel, also orange now. Creamy structure. Honey, vanilla
    • Finish
Stinging still, orange, honey sweet, reasonably long, chocolate

  11. ctu scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

Nice woods with a piquant fruitiness and spiciness. Pleasant surprise.
    • Nose
Deep, floral. Milk caramel, honey, vanilla pudding, orange peel and tobacco.
    • Taste
Creamy, liqueury sweetness. Cherry brandy and Cointreau. Spicy oak. Vanilla, nutmeg and ginger.
    • Finish
Medium length. Nutella, tobacco and green tea.

  12. regislefrancois scored this whisky 82 points Expert Junior

    • Nose
rich and candied. Saffron note. aromas of cognac
    • Taste
      oily, creamy
    • Finish
      average length

  13. markjedi1 scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

Lovely interplay between the wood, the sweetness and the spices at a nice strength with a wonderfully creamy body. A pleasant surprise.
    • Nose
It has a dark and sweet nose with a bitter edge. I am reminded of toffee, leather and tobacco leaves, but also blood oranges and crème brûlée. It also sports a herbal side. Some green garden herbs and a hint of aniseed. Ginger crops up rather forcefully.
    • Taste
It is very creamy on the palate, which I like. You can almost chew it. Immediately very sweet on caramel, candied sugar, rum raisins, cherry liqueur, gingerbread, orangettes and vanilla. Yes, this works nicely. There is still that little green edge that I can only describe as ginger.
    • Finish
I get some hazelnuts and tobacco leaves again in the medium long finish, but the green edge never leaves.

    • Nose
Old furniture, oak haze, leather, vanilla, distinctive sherry sweets, raisins, rum, brown sugar, cherry compote and spices - a very juicy scent
    • Taste
Dubovost, vanilla, distinctive creamy caramel, rounded. Raisins, sherry tones in contrast to the power of permeating alcohol
    • Finish
In the reverberation again, woodiness, raisins, sherry, gradually drying up. At the end a bit of alcohol is coming to my taste.

The 1st release in a series of five limited edition bottlings from
Tomatin that will span 2017 and 2018 called the "Five Virtues" which is a
creative collaboration between the award winning Tomatin distillery and
    leading contemporary artist Eva Ullrich.
The Wood edition is matured in carefully selected French (70% 2006
vintage) American (20% 2006 vintage) and Hungarian (10% 1999 vintage)
    oak casks
Nose: Dark chocolate, blood orange, rum & raisin fudge, aromatic
tobacco, maraschino cherry, toasted vanilla waffles, creme brulee tops,
warm leather and sweet runny honey.
Palate: A big chewy, spicy and aromatic delivery with caramelised
brown sugar, rum & raisin chocolate, spicy ginger cake, charred
vanilla, butterscotch, dark honeycomb, malty mocha and orange fondant.
Finish: Toasted hazelnuts, dark chocolate, creamy coffee fudge, spicy
vanilla & ginger, aromatic oak, sweet tobacco and charred orange
    rind.
Wow plenty to enjoy here, powerful yet elegant with well balanced
fruit, oak and spice. Hard to fault and i can imagine this is going to
be a real crowd pleaser and i would say buy two (one to drink, enjoy and
share and one to keep with the other four in the series so you have the
complete set for a no brainer investment or superb tasting of five
    limited edition Tomatin)

  19. Drochaid scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

Aroma: complex and round, oaky spiciness with a warming toasty undertone.
Characteristics: raw sugar, orange peel, soft vanilla and spicy oak; like a perfectly balanced Old Fashioned.
Finish: Long and round with a rich spice. Original Tasting Notes. Wood, fire, earth, metal and water elements that are central to the oldest philosophies of civilization that enjoy incredible synergies. Together, they produce results that are far greater than their sum. This symbiosis - the 'five virtues' - is a concept synonymous with the ancient processes and materials used by the Tomatin Distillery Men. Water feeds wood; Wood keeps fire upright; Fire brings life to the earth; Earth produces metal; Metal collects water; And so the cycle goes on .... To celebrate the five virtues, the leading artist Eva Ullrich explored these interactions and their role in whisky production. The result is five remarkable works of art ... and five unique versions of the Tomatin Single Malt.

This expression acknowledges the difference wood makes to the whisky with a range of wood types.  it is a Limited Edition with 6000 bottles.  The packaging features work from abstract artist Eva Ullrich, who was asked to visually represent each of the five elements.
