I bought this at the distillery, why? Because I liked it and I haven't had it before, it's not as if Deanston has a wide range to choose from.
    • Nose
Vanilla, ripe banana, orange zest, custard cream biscuit, Mango jam, new balsa wood ,the stuff you get with a model airplane, some cooked pasta and some spice, not sure what.
    • Taste
Cream cake, banana sandwiches like my mother used to make in thick white bread with lots of butter, some white pepper, it has a nice creamy mouth feel, you can taste lots of new wood and ice-cream wafer.
    • Finish
A long to medium chalky finish with some sort of banana flavoured candy.

Easy drinking, good value - what's not too like?

First of all…hats off to Deanston for an entry level malt that is ncf, natural colour and 46.3%. Quite a woody nose that takes a little while to settle. Then, I get honey roasted cashews, unripe banana, pencil shavings (not too far from a good quality grain whisky) and apple. The apple persists onto the palate, where it is joined by some vanilla fudge and fiery chilli peppers. A bitter, woody note then emerges which takes you through to a drying, woody finish. Perhaps a touch too bitter for my liking, but that’s probably to be expected with the youth and the virgin oak.

Fruity, intense, with a clear influence of the barrel. Very successful at the PLV! Highly Recommended.

Lovely new label, and seemingly new juice inside of it as well. Offers lots of fruits and vanilla in a nice summery dram. Wondering if Deanston somehow changed the composition here as I much preferred this over the previous label VO, which I found to be very unpleasantly sharp and only worthy of a 70 score.

N: orange, ripe banana, coconut, vanilla, honey, some green apples

P: banana, vanilla, sweetness and then pepper catch, lovely palate

F: Bitterness, pepper, some sweetness, medium to long

    Very good sipping whisky

The nose is soft and extremely expressive, but at least it’s not too woody due to the virgin oak finish. The palate is okay, it’s good without rocking your boat, but here the wood is a bit more noticeable. On the finish, a bit too much bitterness for my taste, and that costs this Deanston NAS a couple points, putting it just under 80.

Soft and sweet nose, with honey, banana, mango, gentle wood spices and a soft maltiness. Hints of vanilla and coconut shavings.
    • Taste
      79 79
Soft arrival, slightly oily mouthfeel. There are some citrus/lemonade notes first, then some grapefruit provides a refreshing sourness. Chocolate and wood from the virgin oak finish then bring some bitterness, without being excessive, but still a bit too present. Apples and mango give a fruity side but stay in the background.
    • Finish
      77 77
Bitter wood, mango and grapefruit, with a medium length.

I was better with increasing number of drams, but anyways, not for me.
    • Nose
      79 79
sweet, toffee a bit of spice - maybe cinnamon?
    • Taste
      78 78
creamy, slightly sweet, a lot of spice
    • Finish
      75 75
medium long, spicy and dry. I almost swallowed my tongue.

Costs almost nothing. And it's adequately bad.
Not much different than the 12 y old. I just find that distillery products too sweet and hard on the head afterwards.
The interesting thing about htis one is that it's taste develops to worse with the time. At the openening the plastic smell of paint characteristic for immature low quality whiskies was not there. It appeared afterwards.
