  1. Kaleva scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

Nice whisky with very good balance and wonderful delicate nose. Easy going tasty drink, which leaves pleasant warm aftertaste. However, there is a lack of complexity as for a whisky of this age. Also higher ABV would definitely be a plus.
    • Nose
Light and buttery, almonds, vanilla, honey (thyme?) and wax, some port notes, damp oak
    • Taste
Mild and spicy (pepper mix), oak notes, vanilla pie, dried apples and dark raisins
    • Finish
Long and warm, nutty, slightly malty, gently spicy with nutmeg notes

Had it in the glass yesterday as a blind sample and identified as a Balvenie. But I was more of a very good sherry or very old bourbon cask and was surprised that a port cask was involved and couldn't believe that it only has 40 percent (I can't taste it today with a 4cl sample for the second time either) .

I'm not a port fanatic at all and apart from the Bowmore Port 27yo from the Vinters trilogy (WB113760) I haven't had any other 90 point port.

200 euros for a 2016 vintage and 40 percent whisky that is not single cask? I wouldn't have thought it possible for me personally - even in 2022 - but I will buy two or three more bottles of this in the next few weeks.

      91.5
The first nose is wonderfully aromatic, soft and voluminous. Great, dark fruit sweetness that's not over the top. For the blind samples, I guessed about 20 years, a perfect distillate and 50 percent. Because of the cleanliness and the soft yet intense aromas, Balvenie was the obvious choice.

All berries and a 50-euro cassis liqueur in the French star restaurant. (Which I've only been to twice myself at the age of 41).

After 30 minutes, the first aromas of wood can be found in the back.
    • Taste
      90 90
The palate starts with a soft and settled sherry sweetness (but is port) and is a bit thinner than the nose. Here it looks more like 43-45 percent, but if that percentage is enough for the old Macallans, Glendronachs or Glenfarclas, then it's enough for me here.
Full of sweetness, not heavy fruit aromas of strawberry, blackberry, blueberry and the age is not reflected by the wood, but the intensity and polished aromas.
    • Finish
      90 90
The mouthfeel is filling, warm and soft. A perfect and clean distillate. Here I feel the approach of 21 barrels for the first time. The finish is almost long, but not difficult.

Soft and sweet as I expected from Balvenie. Unfortunately a bit too soft. The flavors are sweet and slightly fruity, but I would have liked a little "boom".

Nose: sweet notes of oak, peach, citrus.
Taste: This Balvenie has buried flavor notes. However, after the second sip, noticeable honeycombs, peach and citrus fruit
Rating: 87/100 Generally not bad in taste .. Has a medium-long finish, slightly broken. There is a slight sweetness in the finish.

Pretty sweet. Fruit. You can feel the influence of the port barrels, but it's more in the background. Yeast came out, maybe even the basement. After time, black fruit.
    • Taste
      85 85
Sweet. Feel the influence of the port barrels. Dark fruit. Lots of spices. Currants. Caramel.
    • Finish
      87 87
Dark fruit. Feel the influence of the port barrels. Currants, blackberries.

Balvenie 21 yo Portwood. At The Dhabba Indian Restaurant, Glasgow in April 2019 (before I ate the curry, of course). Aged in 30yr port wood. Aroma is intense crazy red apple, red grape, dried raspberry, raspberry icecream.
An awesome aroma of cherry and Christmas spice. Taste is easy, smooth spirit (expected at the ABV), touches of liquorice, nice warmth and rounded character with lovely biscuity woody notes, soft fruit, more damp wood and subtle port leading to a lightly salted finish. Nice balance. This comes across as a super high quality whisky but I just don't get on entirely well with 'red wine' notes in my whisky. This may be top of class for whiskies with this sort of character, for me at least.

Personally I think this is a lot better than the disappointing 12 Yo Doublewood, and scores may be similar as the 14Yo Carribbean Cask, although the 14Yo is at 43% ABV, and this one is only at 40%
    • Nose
      83 83
Molasses, same as the 12Yo Doublewood and 14Yo Carribbean Cask, but this one feels denser and more solid. Dry red berries. Perfumed wet paper towel, a little dry orange, like those big Sunkist that are too bone dry to eat. There is toffee after the first sip, which is nice.
    • Taste
      82 82
Sweet, refreshing, not much going on, may be a little buttery.
    • Finish
      81 81
Although this is only at 40% ABV, somehow it left some astringent and stinging feelings.

  10. DannyDram scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

Pear, malt, raisins, chocolate, thyme, woody and a little fruity. Oily, slightly sweet and somewhat astringent.

I would be interested to know how it would be with 46%. Delicious, but far too weak to really enjoy it. Pretty easy. In addition, one does not really find the port wine barrel.
    • Nose
      82 82
Fresh on the nose, fruity (apple), some orange, vanilla, milk chocolate
    • Taste
      84 84
a bit thin, but very nice to drink. Delicate oak notes, chocolate, cocoa, honey.
    • Finish
      82 82
      Medium length and pleasant.

  12. JungleDram scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

With 3-6% more that would be a blast and definitely 90+. So you have to drink it in large sips, which spoils the pleasure a bit.

  13. Lu Cifer scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

A nose of vanilla, not atypical for Balvenie, fruit cake with raisins soaked in cognac, fruity, slightly vinous, some wood, very harmonious and appealing

    Taste:
slightly sweet with creamy fruit, spicy with wood, very aromatic, easily covers the palate and tingles a bit on the tongue ...

    Departure:
very long, sweetish-tart, with oak spice (not bitter), raisins, a touch of cognac, soft, sweetish finish ..., delicious!

    Notes from 2015-01-24
Quite a good drop, but the value for money is under 1 :-(
    • Nose
      83 83
Light and fresh on the nose with clear notes of dark fruits in combination with cane sugar ... overall slightly weak-chested.
    • Taste
      87 87
A sweet sweetness of sweet wine, some dark chocolate and orange marmalade.
    • Finish
      85 85
long with a very slight bitterness.

Short spike but don't expect much from 40%. The smell of french fries, oily and a tad bit earthy.
    • Taste
      82 82
Banana, jackfruit and various tropical fruits.
    • Finish
      81 81
Warm medium ending, nutty, oak like, dried kelp.

Enough punch despite only 40% abv - however, I don't like this kind of cardboard in the aftertaste
    • Nose
Intense, fresh, fruity, apples, apricots, citric, honeydew - not bad
    • Taste
Fruity, nutty, spicy, apple juice, some notes of old wood or old books - unfortunately turns into cardboard after a while
    • Finish
      Medium long, warm, zesty
