An elegant whisky without rough edges.

    Notes from a blind tasting.

Well, Highlands is absolutely plausible for me, but where did he hide the 23 years? The part is absolutely wood-free, that's impressive!

Light fruit aromas on cotton candy with vanilla, that is the first impression immediately after pouring. Pears and mirabelle plums establish themselves, a few herbs, slightly grassy, the relationship shifts a little away from the fruit, but there are now zesty citrus notes of lime / grapefruit that are slowly taking over the dominance. Overall dense and intense. After a long standing time, I am first greeted by musty cellar mustiness, which then immediately gives way to spotlessly clean ripe yellow fruit notes, sometimes also as a compote, with a sugar crust. Increased acidity with movement, somewhat mineral, neither herbs nor grass, only a hint of fermentation notes is slowly establishing itself, as well as effervescent powder. First of all, heat makes the alcohol pinch the nose, then it becomes strongly acidic and mineral, some Lysol. As the temperature rises, the sweetness returns, but acidity and lysol remain, as do fermented apples. I liked the nose much better when it was cool, much more elegance, although less density.

In the mouth it is very gentle, fruity with a pleasant acidity and very dark sweetness, malty fir honey, the alcohol develops its power late. Ginger, possibly also black pepper, some honey. Nothing stands out clearly, the balance is good. In the second sip of mineral, reduced fruit and sweetness, still hardly any bitter substances.
    • Finish
      84 84
It dries up significantly on the finish, but hardly any bitter substances seem to be present. The finish is medium long, there may also be a hint of smoke. Bready sweetness clearly remains on the tongue, apple peels, a warming up is not noticeable.

Extremely easy drinkable with a lot of complexity and to discover! You find all kind of note, the other comments already described. Highly recommendable!

  5. Allandale scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

    Floral and fragrant.
    • Nose
High estery notes of green apples skin and lemon zest. Some oakiness and vanilla notes. Rancio hanging arround.
    • Taste
Sweet, soft orchard fruit starting to turn. Like rotting wood in a dunnage warehouse.Added water, sweet jasmine, vanilla and dry oak.
    • Finish
Short, dry and oaky with some spiciness.

[March, 2017]  A while ago Cadenhead bottled a very odd but nevertheless amazingly fine Tullibardine that anyone should try just for curiosity https://www.whiskybase.com/whisky/77432/tullibardine-1993-ca .  So I am eager to try this one (hoping it is unusual too).

Yes, the nose is somehow comparable.  Again this odd but nice smell of freshly baked sourdough bread spiced up with some cinnamon, mint and caraway seeds.  Really strange, but I like it a lot.  Could sniff this for hours...

Rich entry into the mouth, very sweet and mouth-coating.  On the palate again this bread-ish taste and more of the spices (cinnamon, pepper, no mint or caraway here).  Very sweet on lots of different sugars (brown sugar, home grown and exotic fruit sugars).  The finish is of medium length and quite creamy. Again a very unusual but delicious dram, not as extreme as the 22 years old but still very worth to discover.  But expect the unexpected!
