Whisky Reviews for Isle of Jura 1988 SMWS 31.34

9 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 82.67 points

  1. Calmar scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

Atypical Jura, the feeling is that Brookladdy Ber Barley with characteristic tart malt and grain derivatives splashed into his native spirits, curiously, nothing more.
    • Nose
Open, dry, grain and malt uncharacteristic for Jura, light sulfur-industrial notes, stone chips, drying plaster, freshly sawn boards, raisin water.
    • Taste
Thick, saturated, oak, grain, malt, sulfur-mineral shades, caramel sweetness, dark chocolate, candied citrus fruits, sour candies, nuts, coffee, buttery notes.
    • Finish
Spicy, rather refreshing, peel of orange, candy, oak, oily shades, sulfur-metallic notes, chocolate.

  2. J.K.Ch scored this whisky 84 points Expert Senior

The smell does not fit at all, but the taste and conclusion are great.
    • Nose
Fruit, acetone, wood varnish, wood, sweet and plum chocolate.
    • Taste
Total change. Sweet and sweetly spicy. Lavender, lute. It is without bitterness. Really striking. Strongly woody.
    • Finish
Here's the delicate bitterness. The conclusion is very long, spiced with predominant cloves and liquorice.

N: I was convinced this was the Laphroaig but you were right Phil [naturally] - and thank you for this too. i was the confused/tipsy one and yet it is Laphroaig-esque and not overly Jura-esque, displaying a heavily peated character with a [goats] cheesy farminess and a vegetal side - in that '1, 2, 3' order of potency. There’s an authentic countryside note here, that is for sure.
T: A moorish, salivating, mostly savoury ball of peated barley-straw yumminess to chew over.
F: Short but sweet, dry and hollow pine finish.

C: Despite my very limited experience, this is nevertheless the nicest Jura i’ve had, on par with the Ob.’Camas an Staca’ 30yo WB86.70[22] WF87

  9. mandragoru did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

    SMWS tasting notes:

The nose was immediately promising – gentle smoke drifting over Hebridean beaches, apricot jam, blossom honey, whin-scented soap, menthol tobacco and a comforting leather sofa. The sweet, viscous palate had toffee, sweet coconut and mussels, with fantastically muted smoke (wood smoke and aromatic cigars) – the finish and odd mixture of sherry vinegar and lemon zest. On the reduced nose – jam sponge, splashes of citrus and enjoying Coquilles St Jacques among the gorse bushes. The palate now – lemon squeezed on calamari, key lime pie and salty Twiglets. After 27 years in ex-bourbon wood this was transferred to a first-fill charred red wine hogshead.

    DRINKING TIP: With seafood.
