[September, 2018] Before I head down to Campbeltown I have to re-taste a standard Springbank, for sure and at the bar of the Craigellachie hotel I found this 10-years old bottled on August, 24th, 2017 (no single entry for this bottling on WB so far)…

…and it is a good but not earth-moving Springbank. Easy to drink but with some minor flaws that are not annoying, luckily.
    • Nose
      86 86
The nose is a little punchy with cheesy/sweaty aromas first but this goes away after some time of breathing. Then it shows a nicely malty and somewhat fruity profile with herbal aromas added. The most interesting ones I found were candied lemon peel and lemon grass.
    • Taste
      87 87
The palate is balanced but not layered on mainly barley sugars, honeys, spices and some fruits. Water smoothes the taste but surprisingly flattens the nose. I like to nose it neat and drink it a little reduced.
    • Finish
      85 85
The initial mouthfeel is warming and a little coating with slightly drying-astringent feelings (plastics). The finish is of medium length and more spicy/woody with a minor drying end (plastics again).

Scored the presentation high, cause I am not really interested in labels and did not want to spoil the average score. of course the label is horrible. but they have always been horrible, so consistency everywhere:-)

There are starter whiskies and starter whiskies. Springbank 10y finds itself in a group surrounded by Clynelish 14y, Ben Nevis 10y and Ledaig 10y. All good value for not too much money.

These are for sure BFYB's. No doubt about that. As Springbank fan, the 10y is part of my collection without a shadow of the doubt.
    • Nose
Hardly peated like its big brothers 12y cs and 15y. Really smooth and fruity. Beautiful for a bottle below 40 Euro.
    • Taste
In the taste the peat starts to arrive. But much smoother then the mentioned big brothers. Combination of sweetness, fruits, and the slight peat.
    • Finish
Medium long with a delegate peat finish. Nice and warm. Surprising late entrance of spicy flavors.

yes, very good but the old version was quite as good, so don´t expect wonders.

    • Nose
I have been looking forward to this new version as serge marked it very high. finally in the european stores now. high expectations!
at first nosing cannot smell a difference to the old version, which is no bad news as a found the old tenner absolutely good. but aren´t we always looking for new experiences?
so we have a sooty, slightly peaty and earthy profile, slightly alcoholic. also some eucalyptus and a very fresh but faint fruitiness in the background. I´d wish it came a bit in front to make a counterpoint to the slightly austere profile. and indeed, after a few minutes just that happens. the fruitiness is hard to pin down, peaches I´d say and oolong tea.
    • Taste
did you notice that the nose didn´t quite convince me? (only because I am totally petted by the mitchells)
now the palate is perfect in my opinion. fresh and mouthwatering on apples, reineclaudes and peaches. mineral and laser-like, chiselled like good white wine. still quite sooty and the peat is more prominent.
    • Finish
not too long but fresh and super clean which is a miracle after a dirty bitch like that

    Superb! Enthusiasm 5/5 Whisky n ° 1257
    • Nose
      Beautifully crafted, fruity heart, super!
    • Taste
Super spicy attack. Immediate sweetness behind. What finesse and texture for a 10 years reduced! Fruits cooked, stewed. Berries.
    • Finish
Finale all smooth, subtle, completely faithful to the Springbank spirit.

  8. St. Pauli scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

    Great entry level whisky!
    • Nose
Nice nose that combines slightly sweet notes of toffee, peach, sweet/sour notes of candy, and earthy notes of putty, and forest soil.
    • Taste
Tingling, slightly oily, grassy, earthy, slightly bitter. Toffee, nuts, tobacco, grass.
    • Finish
A bit short, on grass, tobacco and marzipan.
