    A stunning sherried Arran that tastes older than it is. Apparently this cask had high evaporation rate, and the oak rate is higher than one would expect from a cask of this age. Having said that, this is an old-school sherry bomb that oozes with dark goodness. The wine and the oak have formed a bond not unlike old Macallans. Really delish. Not the jam-like sherry sweetness that many of todays' sherry whiskies are packed with: Think 80s sherry whiskies, dark n' delish, macerated fruits, cherries, rich tones that no longer are often seen. Ends with tannins and dark chocolatey-bitterness. Dangerously drinkable. Thanks to Finnmatey for the sample!

    This whisky veers between a more common heavy sherry note, and one that's juicier, fruitier, and more unexpected. The fruitiness has more in common for example with Bruichladdich 1992 24yo CA small batch 53.3%, than with Glendronach 18yo, which I had with this Arran.
    I ended up scoring this a point higher than Glendronach 18, because at its best this Arran is very interesting, while Glendronach 18 is always the same - high quality but with predictability that gets old after a while.

    • Nose
      Dark chocolate, cloves, coffee grounds on first nosing, but it opens up and goes fruitier, riper, sweeter. At its best it's more like a berry juice than a heavily sherried 2000s whisky. I probably would not know the distillery blind. With water it becomes spicier. Occasionally some kind of a clump of earth and barn hay.
    • Taste
      FIrst cloves and allspice, but soon they make way for faintly waxy fruit juice. Red- and blackcurrant juice concentrate. A little water makes it peppery, but some more brings the juice back.
    • Finish
      The cloves return here, and this time they're staying - a bit tangy even. Feels better with more water than less.
