Whisky Reviews for Clynelish 2000 SMWS 26.118

Unfortunately there is not much Clynelish left, but the drop is damn tasty and uncomplicated!
    • Nose
Typical Virgin Oak nose with lots of coconut and fresh oak, sweet banana, then suddenly a floral hint of roses, vanilla, milk powder and pudding cream, unfortunately the typical Clynelish scent comes through only a little bit in beginnings, the longer you sniff though At some point, orange peel will come through, which prevents one from pulling the nose away for even a second
    • Taste
Creamy, more coconut again, slightly peppery, beautiful, untreated oak, all in all like vanilla milk with a dash EDIT: From the third sip on it's the Clynelish orange candy a la nimm2
    • Finish
The cream dominates, the oak is very fine, the mouthfeel is simply continued

N: Aged in a virgin oak hogshead, I likened this malt to artisanal cognac with murky herbal aromatic spices and putty.
T: Best neat. It starts off as a stiff & simple shot-like spirit that takes off after a while. With water, I find little behind the fine veneer, save for a few orchard fruits towards baked apple strudel. Mouthfeel improves over time.
F: A hint of phenol and honeyed barley sugar. The woodiness, and therefore balance, emerge over time.
C: No way indicative of the Clynelish style, and therefore in keeping with tonight’s theme. The cask is now ready for round two.

    SMWS tasting notes:

The nose neat was rich and beautiful; Amaretto soaked peach triple layer cake with mascarpone frosting, chocolate ganache truffles and marzipan stolen ice cream with raisins soaked in brandy. The taste was that of maple syrup flapjack, hazelnut and cinder toffee tiffin as well as honeyed roasted fig and almond tart. A drop of water and aromas of sweet Jamaican fried dumplings and creamy orange-cinnamon rice pudding met banana fritters with a vanilla caramel sauce on the palate like a warm embrace. Sixteen years in an ex-bourbon hogshead, finished in a virgin oak hogshead with a heavy toast and a medium char.

DRINKING TIP: When meeting an old friend
