Whisky Reviews for Benrinnes 2008 CM

- I was looking for a nice, simple and straightforward bourbon cask whisky as a change from the heavy peat and sherry monsters, and this came recommended by a chap in my local shop whose views I trust. I was a bit wary of the rather young age. However, I needn't have worried. This is a classic profile for a middle-aged, bourbon cask speyside. Plenty of barley, grist, vanilla, citrus fruits, pear drops and creamy honey are all brought together by some well-integrated oak on the nose. One or two drops of water and a bit of time in the glass added extra depth and weight to the nose, without fundamentally changing its profile. Full-bodied, almost meaty and chewy, on the palate, with crisp barley again to the fore. The finish starts to drift towards bitterness (perhaps a hint of 'heat' from the youngish spirit making itself known?), but then pulls back to leave a lingering taste of barley and honey, which I really like. Simple pleasures for a reasonable price. Just what I was looking for!
