Whisky Reviews for Cardhu 12-year-old

  1. hs305 scored this whisky 81 points Connoisseur

[September, 2017]  I had this dram (bottled 2017) in a blind head-to-head tasting "OLD vs. NEW" versus an old 12-year Cardhu bottling (most probably from the mid-eighties) https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/18241/cardhu-12-year-old during a FoSM club tasting in Bonn. Colour:  The colour of both drams is about the same at jonquiripe corn (of course, as they use caramel to fix it).  Maybe OLD is half a shade darker.  The texture of OLD shows late legs and fat sticky tears.  NEW's texture is about the same.Nose:  NEW offers a less intense nose than OLD mostly on yellow fruit, malty and grassy aromas.  It is slighty spirity and musty.  OLD's nose is richer on apricots and other fruits, currants, vanilla, maltiness and some adorable OBF's.  OLD is neither spirity nor musty and not grassy.  I clearly prefer OLD on this dimension.Initial mouthfeel:  OLD is warming and a little coating (just the tongue) with no distracting moments.  NEW is less oily and not coating at all.  Guess what I like?Taste:  NEW again is flatter than OLD with a slightly drying and musty flavours profile.  Some raisins pop up besides the malty sweet and spicy wooden notes.  OLD is richer and sweeter on a nice fruity and malty profile.  It offers peaches, apricots and barley sugars in abundance.  Again this round wins OLD clearly.Finish:  OLD has a medium length finish with no off-notes or bitter/drying moments.  It is very enjoyable on the same fruity-malty profile as the taste.  The finish of new is shorter on herbal notes and some drying wooden notes (Do they use some virgin oak casks in these batches due to the cask shortage crisis?).  Yes, OLD wins all four dimensions without any question. The FoSM club voting won OLD by 17 votes versus 3 for NEW (and one draw).  This blind tasting showed a significant difference of the flavour profiles and the quality of the spirits (even when discounting any mysterious "bottle maturation" effects on OLD).  It seems as if the 12-year Cardhu moved into a grassy-herbal flavours profile instead of the old fruity-malty one (so fermentation time is shorter today - to maximise throughput?).  And the newer bottling is less oily and hence of a weaker mouthfeel and finish (Do they run the stills faster due to the whisky boom?).  I like the old one as an easy dram to sip but would not buy or drink a new bottling at all...

Sweet taste and flavor with nice finishing notes. It doesn't feels like "heavy" drink. This whisky has good sweet, light and smooth smell and taste.

  3. Spiceweasel scored this whisky 76 points Member Senior

Completely unspectacular, what to expect for the price. That does not mean he's bad, but I'm kind of hard to classify him.

  4. Hemdl scored this whisky 79 points Connoisseur

For beginners, there are definitely worse malts, that's for sure. Compared to the new Glenfiddich or Glenlivet in this price segment, I think it's better.
Solid malt without rough weaknesses, whereby 43% certainly would not have harmed him.
    • Nose
Very light and mild. Floral and grassy notes, some honey sweetness and a few bright fruits in the background. Not bad, but could be much more intense.
    • Taste
Soft and mild texture, probably due to the low alcohol content. Needs a few moments on the tongue until it really unfolds. Again sweet and slightly fruity, with a subtle oak and minimal spicy notes. Here too, there are no shortcomings, a handcrafted, clean malt that simply lacks the last kick.
    • Finish
Rather short and pretty flat. A few oak notes with a tendency to bitterness, that's it.

A bit simple, but if you're not out to overload the senses it's very drinkable.

I like the bottle shape which sits well in the hand when pouring, as well as the flared opening with the oversized wood topper.
    • Nose
      Light, fruity and surpricingly fresh.

Lots of juicy apples and a few peaches.

Mild fudge, very faint vanilla and oak.
    • Taste
Very light, almost watery, sweet malt, some hazelnutts arriving midway. Burnt honey turning spicy.
    • Finish
Spice lingers a little, turning slightly bitter, dry and woody.
