Whisky Reviews for Strathisla 1960 GM

Starts really excellent on the nose - the best heavy and mature sherry wood you can have with good fruity balance and complexity, on the palate there is not much fruitiness left and the heavy and woody notes become louder which turn even into a little dryness with the finish - still very good overall

I like this one a little better than the Strathisla 1960/2006 40% because this one has definitely more oomph. I tried to compare also against the Strathisla 1960 book of kells but it's way too different as that is a bourbon cask.

      94 94
Intense, dried fruits, plums, figs, dates, acacia honey, toffee, espresso, dark chocolate with pecan, hints of (good) leather, sherry wood, whiffs of menthol, xmas spice, brown sugar and molasses, pipe tobacco - excellent!
    • Taste
      92 92
Little punchy, oily, little creamy, liquorice, subtle sweetness, more dark chocolate, espresso or rather a ristretto, more menthol and some eucalyptus, heavy sherry wood, little tannic, still some dried fruits - great!
    • Finish
      90 90
Medium long, warm, more woody, darkest chocolate, more tannic, herbal, probably a little bit drying, a tad bitter

A big beast. A big sherry.
Really very good but lacks a bit of surprise.
91 before aeration. Can be 92 after.
    • Nose
47 years old but what power. And to say that it can be reduced to 50%. And I'm not talking about this color, one of the darkest I've seen.
      Very big wood, leather, camphor.
We are on a first fill who did his job.
Red fruits (currant), cinnamon, a little bit of cocoa bean.
      Prunes, raisins.
    • Taste
On the palate it's even more camphorated.
We are mainly on dried fruits, nuts, raisins, prunes.
The wood is always present. A little nutmeg.
With aeration, the balance is made and the magic operates.
    • Finish
The finish is long, power on chocolate, licorice, wood and camphor.
