A free sample, very nice and easy drinking, for today the short version of the notes is enough ;-)

    22/21/22/22 (87P)
    • Nose
Light amber rests delicately and pale in the premium snifter, smoke rises, slightly mineral, minimal hints of peat and spicy oak, a hint of caramel and toffee, subtle apricots and oranges, sugar, smoke and sweet ...
    • Taste
Mild, pleasantly peaty with a mineral smoky note, caramel, sugar, a slight tingle on the tongue, pleasant sharpness, hazelnuts and zest from oranges. Salt, pepper, oak, peat, earth, yellow fruits and oranges.
    • Finish
Tart, smoky, dark wood and peat, minimally dried fruits, voluminous and long-lasting.

A good example of peaty Islay Whisky. Simple, but balanced. Citric and smoky at first, it leaves a little sweetness on the palate before closing on a slightly astringent medicinal note.

The single malt has a classic maritime and smoky character that is on par with the well-known Islay greats.

An interesting balance between smoke and vanilla.
A definitely light consistence opens up to reveal some oak and zesty taste.
It gets growingly rich and complex after being open from some time and, maybe, with a drop of water. Finish is not so short as some reviews can tell and offering some warm sherry flavour.
    Clear natural colour.

More delicate smell compare with sanaig with emphasized waxy. Vanilla, we still have little bread flavor, middle ripe apples, strong feel of alcohols 85
    • Taste
      84 84
Floral honeys, apples, ginger spices, less Smoky than the previous one, with more classic Speyside casking and also a lot of spicy spices takes the lead at the end. 84

      86 86
Coca and sour and charcoal 86

    I should like it, but I don’t.

There’s just something about Kilchoman’s Machir Bay that doesn’t work. On the nose there’s bags of sweet smelling peat, a freshness, toffee, apple peel and ash notes but then slapbang in the middle of it there’s a funky smell, like sweaty custard. Feint chlorine/tcp is masked with an unappealing damp pine and smoked meat whiff. I just don’t get it.

The smell translates into equally disjointed dram. There’s the initial arrival of wood and peat with a good helping of ash and meat, lemon zest and brine but then the funk is there too. It’s creamy for sure and the mouthfeel it lovely but the overall taste is confusing to me. Custard, toffee, ash, peat dampness, on paper I should love it but it’s not working

To its credit it’s a great quality whisky for the money and it’s consistent too. This isn’t the first time I’ve had it but in each case it’s been remarkably similar. They’re definitely working hard to ensure it remains true to its roots.

The problems really start when you start comparing it to its stablemates for the same money. At this end of the market there’s amazing whisky experiences to be had and constant discounting means bargains aplenty. Could I recommend this when it goes head to head with Lagavulin 16, Port Askaig 100 proof, Bunnahabhain’s Toiteach a Dhà and their excellent 12, I could go on. An embarrassment of riches abound, all of them better choices for my palate than Machir Bay.

I had that before, but now at a tasting once more on the bottle and noted the date of bottling. Let's see if it's different than trying on your own ...
A young and fresh Islay. He may certainly mature even longer, but as impetuous as he likes already.
    • Nose
      75 75
Smoke, but quite fresh. So nothing peat and nothing cold. Pleasant and cheerful. Something sweet - but no idea where that comes from.
    • Taste
      80 80
Smoke and citrus fruits. Now clearly. Slightly alcoholic, a little vanilla. Slightly metallic in the background. Now a little oily approach.
    • Finish
      80 80
Pretty long, pleasant smoke. The metallic is completely gone, the citrus freshness lingers a bit.

So far, every filling of the Machir Bay has tasted very good. Constant quality, the whisky gets better the older it is. Unique taste, I think.

It’s a lightly and gentle peatead with good influence of ex-bourbon casks. Creosote, salt, dust, earth, seaweeds, sweet fruits, vanilla and dry hay notes on nose. Sweet fruits, dust, creosote, vanilla and dry grass notes on palate. The finish is a middle, lightly peated and sweet, earthly and dusty. It’s a good and smooth whisky, with good quantity of peatness and vanilla sweetness.

A simple but good islay expression
    • Nose
Peat, smoke, lemons, vanilla, medicinally and sweet peat
    • Taste
Peat and smoke again, a dry smoke, sweet lemon (think lemon candy)
    • Finish
stays peaty, dry smoke comes back, sweet at the very end, you don't notice alot from the barrel

    • Taste

    • Finish
      long, with sharpness

The nose offers a thick peat, quite fresh, mineral, earthy, humid. Imposing iodine, full of scum. Cottony smoke. Salt, stone, vegetal notes. A vanilla bean. A rather soft, diffuse caramel imposes itself in the mouth, but the whole remains very abrupt, rocky, with barely sketched white fruits. Moss, lichen. I note the coarse salt, then the pepper rises, to explode in a slightly bitter and sparkling finish. Honeysuckle, apricots.

    • Taste
Lakrisal, very lightly stimulating, sweet, lots of caramel. Also some wood fire smoke

Dry in taste and finish. Not the cream I expected from the nose. Still a good and balanced dram for a very reasonable price.
    • Nose
Honey sweetness and citrus freshness. Light vanilla hidden in a creamy environment.
    • Taste
Sweet starter followed by a pinch of pepper. Drying out very fast. Peat and smoke coming after together with more wood tones. A bit of salt later on.
    • Finish
Medium finish. The dry wood, peat and smoke keep hanging around for a while.

    Blog
Here, Kilchoman are looking to achieve the same spirit character as the 100% Islay barley malt but with a higher ppm and an introduction of sherry maturation to that mix. Some previous Machir Bay releases used up to 40% oloroso matured spirit but this uses only 10%, matured using Martell [blog] casks. Four batches are made a year but all follow the same recipe.
N: You can see the family resemblance to 100% Islay with a rich honeyed oiliness and a chewy sweet>funk.
T: Clearly sweeter [than the 100% Islay], honeyed again. Dries quicker. Some burned/smoked herbal/heathers. Sweet/oily dry, sweet and soft.
F: Greenish now with soft sweet vinegar. Dries to a clean finish just like the 100% Islay. A slight oiliness remains.
C: A sweeter start compared to the 100% Islay but a more sour-dry finish. Again it’s good though I rather prefer the ‘exquisiteness’ of the first one. This carries ‘youthful exuberance’ [George].

    Scores a C+

compared to the first editions I find this latest batch to be very noticeably containing older and older spirit, less spirit forward and more wood interaction resulting in a more balanced and even better dram!

already looking forward to the 2018 batch!
