As a "Tale of Two Brothers" I tasted the Green Thistle head-to-head against the Batch 14 of the Springbank 12 CS of 2017 - Conclusion: While one (12CS) is enjoying his breakfast with fruit and honey sitting in the dunes next to the cooled embers of the fire, dressing the cut on his finger from serving last evening's roast, his older brother (100proof) is already out walking on the beach with a bowl of warm baked plums and dark chocolate crumbles among the groynes, contemplating the plaster on his thumb…
DE: As "Two dissimilar brothers" I tasted the Green Thistle head to head with batch 15 of the Springbank 12 CS from 2017. The conclusion: While one (12CS) is enjoying his breakfast next to the remains of the campfire and freshly bandages the cut on his finger, his older brother (100proof) is already walking between the groynes on the beach with a bowl of plum compote and chocolate and is contemplating that Patch on his thumb ...

      EN:
An intense golden gleam shimmers through the glass holding the latest Batch 14 of the Springbank 12 CS, and right after filling the glass, a smoky caramel swath from a recently extinguished fire, in which the sticks smeared with the rest of the molten marshmallows still glimmer , billows passed the nostrils. The freshly caramelized sugar remains, joined by toffee and a hint of malt, fresh, lavishly sugared popcorn, honey slowly becoming maple syrup. All of that is balanced, though, by melon and mangoes as well as the acute freshness of lime, oranges and mint leaves, together forming the impression of a light summerly gravy with a few drops of lemon essence, which in turn gives way to the more clear and crisp smell of iodine and fresh gauze. All in all, the sherried influence of figs and raisings stays beautifully balanced with the Bourbon echoes of vanilla, oak and beech wood, wicker and freshly cut rose stems.

      DE:
Strong gold shines through the glass in the current batch 14 of the Springbank 12 CS and after pouring out, a smoky caramel cloud wafts past a recently extinguished fire in which the sticks still glow with marshmallow remains. The freshly caramelized sugar remains, toffee and a little malt, fresh, plenty of sugared popcorn, honey on the way to maple syrup. The whole thing, however, balanced by melon and mango as well as a sharp freshness of limes, oranges and a little mint, as a whole like a light summer gravy with a dash of lemon, which increasingly becomes a clearer impression of iodine and fresh gauze bandages. Overall, the sherry influence of figs and raisins remains nicely balanced alongside the bourbon tones of vanilla, oak and beech wood, willow branches and the fresh cut of roses.

      EN:

Lightly smoky caramel and marzipan sweetness continue the nosing impressions on the palate, the cask strength is noticeable with a slight bitterness, some dryness and a little tingle, but staying pleasant and slowly transforming again into the peppery, spicy afterthought of the light lime gravy. Red berries join the fray, as well as a salty maritime touch, some iron and cheese, which all together again concentrate into iodine and gauze, alternating in their facets.

      DE:
Slightly smoky caramel and marzipan sweetness continue the nose impression on the palate, the barrel strength is noticeable with slight bitterness, a little dryness and a tingle, but remains pleasant and in turn merges with the peppery and spicy impression of the light lime roast . Red berries are now also included, along with the salty maritime note, some iron and cheese, which are concentrated again in iodine and gauze and their facets alternate.

      EN:

Finally, all of these nuances are leading over into a creamy and warm finish, which, in all honesty, does not complete justice to all the interestingly varied impressions of the nosing and tasting, but which still manages to leave first a distinct spiciness followed by a lovely smoky allusion like the lingering, husky remnants clinging to your clothes in the morning after spending the whole night next to the open fire.

      DE:
Finally, they lead into a creamy and warm finish, which unfortunately does not quite do justice to the diverse impressions in the nose and palate, but which, after the initial spiciness, leaves a nice smoky impression, like the breath in the clothes in the morning when you've been sitting by the fire all night.

Parallel tasting with Springbank 11 Local Barley

Well known and yet always a nuance unlike its predecessor. Also Batch 14 can again be described as extremely successful.

The smell of dried fruit and Fruchtmus (apricots). In addition fine sea salt and meadow herbs. A little smoke? Fresh and refreshing at first, but over time it becomes earthier and heavier. The sea salt and the fruits retreat into the background, sweetness now comes from honey and a vanilla pod. In addition, there are tobacco and leather notes. The alcohol is well integrated.

Very strong start. The malt lays dry and peppery on the tongue. Fruit notes of tangerines and oranges sparkle, but they can not work their way forward. There is still the pepper in the way, which claims a lot of attention together with a liquorice note. Over time, the fruits push forward, but it always stays dry. The taste of latte coffee passes by shortly. The pepper from the beginning comes again.

Long and dry, with fine herbs, apricots and chocolate.

A very balanced, tasty malt with lots of WUMMS!
Not a miracle of complexity, but anything but one-dimensional or boring. There are many beautiful nuances hidden in the depths. Nothing stands out and it does not appear overloaded with individual notes.

Fruit notes of apple, gooseberry and mulberry. A little oak and a subtle acidity.

Sweet and spicy with a pleasant sharpness.

In the long and overall sweet finish, many beautiful notes are revealed.

This 12 is a real hit and miss for me, unfortunately this is a miss. It feels younger, little bit hot and one-dimensional. It also lacks a little freshness other batches  and the 10 ob have.

    • Nose
Directly this horny spring bench nose, despite barrel strength and blender glass super mild, beautiful, flowery, violet, round, hardly any alcohol, nothing bothers. With water still violets, very, very minimal salt-citrus smoke in the background. Great
    • Taste
Again as beautifully round and soft as a bath in a summer meadow, the finish is rather long, dry and minimally a nice, appropriate bitterness.

      Long and creamy

      I'm excited for a 12er.

Fantastic whisky! Very oily and nutty. Vanilla and coconut comes and leather dry and Smokey in the end. No nasty bitter at all and all flavor flourished in numbers of folds. No need to add water but if you do, more chocolate and raisins pop out.

Takes water well; great value for money. Basically, you get the dirty/farmy smokiness and coastal brine characteristic of Springbank with some hushed refill sherry fruits & nuts thrown in for good measure. A huge upgrade over the ten-year-old; noticeably more complex than the 15. If only this were a few years older, we'd zoom straight past the 88-point mark.

Candied orange peel, maraschino cherry, leather, rubber, engine oil, coal fumes, ash, alcohol (can't conceal its age all the way).
    • Taste
      87 87
Less fruity and sweet than the nose would have you presume. Develops on the tart / astringent spectrum, but it's less austere and forbidding than the 10 y.o.
Mineralic and chalky, with refill-sherry fruits in the beginning and more and more smoke and brine as it goes on. The mouthfeel has a slight fizz to it, especially when diluted. It's not super complex, but very well-balanced (though I'm still kind of uncertain about the often quite "rubbery" ex-sherry casks that Springbank sources)...
    • Finish
      86 86
Long, tart, and elegant, with hints of red fruits and ashy, acerbic smoke.
