Whisky Reviews for Dailuaine 1971 GM

This was a surprise! The nose suggested bourbon maturation first, without any doubt. After a while, the dried fruits and the level of acidity suggest maturation on sherry (oloroso) casks. Nevertheless, this is a powerful dram, despite it's low ABV. It's not the gentlest dram, but a pleasure to drink.
    • Nose
wax, barley, a meadow with fresh herbs, chamomile tea, apple juice, coconut, vanilla, a bit mineral. After a while, the oak starts getting louder, with more waxy and polished smells, and some wood smoke. There is also marzipan, sour grapes, orange liqueur and engine oil.
    • Taste
Full-bodied and punchy! A bit perfumed, drying with a decent level of acidity. Dried fruits, polished oak, loads of herbs come together, with a splash of mixed orange and lemon juice.
    • Finish
Long and quite punchy for 40% ABV. It's rather spicy (pepper, cinnamon), fruity (orange, dried apricots, a squash of lime) and herbal (like a liqueur). There is a nice balance between bitter, sour and sweet.

Oaky nose, balanced with some classic sweetshop aromas (pear drops, sugared almonds & jelly babies are all in there somewhere) and a warming waft of gentle smoke. With a bit of time in the glass there was additional touches of engine oil and nail varnish. All rather old school, beautifully balanced and strangely comforting. Very similar profile on the palate, with woody notes balanced out by sweeter elements (a nice touch of icing sugar). Relatively short finish, with plenty of oak, but not overly dry or bitter. Didn't want or need any water, it seems very happy at 40%. Nothing earth shattering, but a lovely example of a well-aged, nicely balanced whisky.
