Definitely has commonalities with the distillery release 8 year variant. Though I think this trades some smoothness/silkiness for interesting notes and a more dynamic (and probably more divisive) peat profile.
    • Nose
Some funky peat: overripe fruit or grilled/charred fruit. Mineralic with some coastal tones: wet rocks. Clean wood. There's a fattiness to it. Peppery. A bit of sweet peat (a la Ledaig) mixed with more coastal, phenolic Islay peat.
    • Taste
Almost chalky in texture. Peat out of the gate. Smoked mustard. Maybe smoked salmon with a mustard glaze. Phenols build across the palate - plenty of coast and seaweed with a touch of rubber or camphor.
    • Finish
Charred fish skin. Wet earth. Mustard. Coastline. A delicious, natural smoke note. Some fairly bitter, carbonated char (like from a charred pizza crust) lingers as the fading note.

Very good islander who enjoys drinking.

Pleasant peat smoke plays around the nose, behind it citrus aromas, ripe lemons that go towards oranges, a sea breeze blows by.
    • Taste
      85 85
It starts sweet in the mouth, honey, ash and oak.
    • Finish
      85 85
The finish is long with smoke that turns into sweetness and then fades away with very strong oak notes.

    Lemon, wet peat, sea air
woody, spicy, a little grassy, and smoke, dried peat with candied citrus, a little rough on the return, but strong and tenacious scents!
    final a bit short

a rather sweet Islay, so CAOL ILA and Laphroaig OUTSIDE, we go on LAGAVULIN in 8 years:
sweet, maritime nose, a little grassy and fruity on fresh, wet citrus, with pearl peel, some smoke and lemony vanilla
the mouth is more marked, on the fruits a little candied (always citrus lemon), the peat appears more present here, deeper, the port is not far with dried fish hints from the cages on the dock!
the sweet sensation persists and detonates, with pear syrup juice here, amplified by spices, the more grassy sensation remains.
the finish is on dry peat, vanilla, lemon, simple but long and sweet.

A dared choice, if you ask me. Very atypical, while clean and round. A lot of fun.
    • Nose
The nose starts fairly soft and introvert on autumn leaves, grasses, mushrooms and wet earth. Quite an atypical start is that regard. Add some anise, dill and parsley and you’ll realize this is a very herbal, spicy Lagavulin. The smoke is discrete, the maritime elements almost unrecognizable.
    • Taste
It is soft and farily sweet on the palate. I get some white wine, limoncello, vanilla, a small salty edge and some smoke. Midpalate – dare I say finally? – some ashes kick in, as does more smoke and some capers. Some smoked halibut, albeit in the background. It is mostly sweet though. Sugar candy sweet in fact. Some pear drops that emphasize the sweetness of the Lagavulin.
    • Finish
The finish is medium long, round and sweet with most of the attention going to pears and lemon with a bit of ashes.

I find the sensations of Laga 8 OB: this peat, these distillate oranges, It is perhaps a little more malty. Very vegetal (thyme). Maybe a bit less peaty. Limited interest of this single cask compared to the OB.
