This is the first version of oban's DE. This series is all fino barrels. After drinking some, I think it is quite standard. The scores are quite interesting. The scores given by the European tycoons are very low, but I think this one is not bad, and it echoes the food flavor and aesthetics of Asians. Obviously, it's not the heavy and sweet sherry type.
    • Nose
      87 87
Light citrus-based fruit, oak, some old furniture, tobacco, then malt and rice; not very complex on the nose, but comfortable and fresh.
    • Taste
      88 88
The entrance is a typical fino barrel flavor type, red wine, dried fruit, red berries, and then a little bit of leather and tobacco; after a while in the mouth, the obvious salty taste of seawater and seaweed begins to appear, with moderate sweetness and slightly Salty, dry overall, no astringent tannins, good alcohol control, almost no irritation.
    • Finish
      85 85
A little weaker, the flavor is also very ordinary

Pretty rich, strong and fruity whisky. A very pleasant Oban for sure.
    • Nose
      85 85
Surprisingly strong alcohol in the nose, spicy, some heavy cigar tobacco, some prunes, pine wood.
    • Taste
      86 86
Now it's getting way more soft and smooth, gentle, some licorice, honey, a little pepper, some caramel. Then grapes come through very strong, and prunes.
    • Finish
      86 86
Now some more pepper, strong, honey, grapes, a bit of tobacco again, pretty long finish.

[October, 2019] A quick review of a sample.

I never was an Oban malt fan and this sample did not change that legacy. It is rather simple with a liqueur-esque tasting impression (I am in for whisky and not for liqueurs). Nonetheless, it is easy drinkable but I will not remember its taste by tomorrow morning (most probably).
    • Nose
      86 86
The colour is deep copper and the nose offers a grassy-autumn floral profile that is quite simple. Some chalky and waxy aromas join in later and after significant breathing time the fruits dare to pop up (oranges, passion fruits). Now it is much nicer, so take your time with this dram.
    • Taste
      85 85
The taste is much sweeter, almost like a liqueur and turns more bitter the longer I chew it (green tea, tobacco). There are some interesting spices too, among them candied ginger, cloves and nutmeg.
    • Finish
      85 85
The initial mouthfeel is warming and coating without distracting moments. The finish is of medium length and turns spicier with a minor drying feeling towards the end. Water is not needed, the dram just gets flat upon reduction.

Stewed fruits on the nose and quite floral with it.
Good mouthfeel and quite punchy for 43% with hints of tobacco smoke, all good so far :)
Quite spicy and a nice dose of peat in the mix with hints of tobacco smoke, hints of breakfast marmalade with fresh cream.
Medium length finish getting a little hot but it adds to the overall experience.
    This is a good whisky
