Whisky Reviews for Ballechin 2005 vW

8 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 84.80 points

The nose is peaty but less than expected considering ABV, some vanilla and dried fruits. Remains cramped up, also after 15 minutes.

Initial taste is too flat, some peat smoke, some citrus. From a side by side comparison with the standard 10 yo I'm getting way less flavour (and less peat smoke!) despite the much higher ABV.

The finish is long and lingers with peatyness and wood spices.

Taking into account the price level of well over €60 not a bottling I would spend my money on.

    • Nose
Practice, that promises something. Smells tight, peat, phenols, amaa!
    • Taste
Bam! What a peat. I do not know how many ppm this is, but it is considerable. And then cask strength. Boy. Do think that the peat overshadows the other flavors, maybe it's too ... One trick pony? Anyway, I love ponies!
    • Finish
The cat is stuck, certainly, but that's what it is. There is no great further complexity.

Not your average Islay-peatbomb, but quite subtle and smooth. I liked it.
    • Nose
A slight prickle, buttery, vanilla, sponge cake, toffee, cinnamon, lime, liquorice and chocolate. After a while the peaty notes appear, medicinal and bandages, some meat and lemon grass.
    • Taste
Surprisingly smooth considering the abv. Fresh citric notes with dark chocolate, peatsmoke, liquorice, fruity, peach and some diesel.
    • Finish
Medium length, honey, peatsmoke, liquorice, creamy, anise. There are some farmy notes and diesel.

  5. Allandale scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

A God smoke Highland. A better one this cask strength .
    • Nose
Warm, and soft, smokiness peaty, some fruit, green apples?
    • Taste
Alkaline leather, green juice, and fruit, peaty again, farmyard smoke and fruit. Not very complex.
    • Finish
Great smoke aftertaste, sweet root in a medium long finish. Great salt warmth.

This dram stood its ground during a private tasting next to other strong Whiskies such as Ledaig, Clynelish and Ben Nevis! Finally another cask strength Van Wees bottling that was well worth the wait!
