There is nothing wrong with this malt. Even if you are dealing with a real sherry bomb here, it doesn't seem overloaded at all, but rather very exciting and complex. At 18, he also has an impressive age to offer. Despite clear oak notes, it is spicy on the finish, but not really bitter. I like that a lot too. The alcohol content is also ideally chosen at 46% vol. It gives the malt strength and intensity without stinging the mouth and nose. The whole package is right here.

    • Nose
Very intense and complex attack with lush, slightly sweet sherry notes. The alcohol contributes to this intensity, but is well integrated. The aroma reminds me of crème brûlée and caramel pudding. On the fruity side, I find dried fruits like raisins and dates, as well as currants, blackberries and jam. You could smell it for hours. After a while, the oak comes through and combines pleasantly with the other aromas.
    • Taste
An equally intense start. Initially, the mouthfeel is rather sweet and fruity. As in the nose, I find caramel, dried fruits and berries, and ripe cherries. Then it becomes a bit drier and spicier, the oak becomes more intense.
    • Finish
The finish is very long and pleasant. The oak brings aromas of cocoa and dark chocolate. The fruits of the sherry can still be felt for a long time.

Whisky is very cognac, brandy, tasty, very full, it costs its money, but given all the advantages it seems somehow simple not interesting.
    • Nose
Old cognac, brandy, cigar box, chocolate, cinnamon, a lot of sweet fruits - prunes, mangoes, dates, a little cola, the aroma is medium but varied and complex, not dry.
    • Taste
Sweet oak, cigar, dried apricots, dates, slightly bitter and sharp, creamy.
    • Finish
Long, cognac, apple, a bit of wood, light bitterness, pleasant and a little warming.

Very reminiscent of a 2013 release I had a while back. Initially, nose and taste was coming of as a lot younger than what it offers at the end of its bottle life. So further oxidization is necessary IMHO. Either keep it open for a day or two, or decant. The dram, as I reviewed it here, requires no further notes. Simply great stuff!
    • Nose
All kinds of dried fruit – raisins, prunes, and dates. Acidity and sweetness intermingle right away. Oranges and caramel, Turkish delight, rose water, and cinnamon.
    • Taste
Creamy sweetness, mentholated oak, and cough drops. Initially these notes are hard to pin down as they are heavily interwoven – associations of dates, figs, and raisins become apparent however. Caramel and lavender, as well as vanilla and herbal tea.
    • Finish
Medium. Honeyed and sweet, lightly herbal and mild-mannered tannins.

    A great malt!
    • Nose
Sweet, plum, dried fruit, vanilla and chocolate.
    • Taste
Less sweet than in the nose, raisins, very complex.
    • Finish
Sweetness, coffee beans, later a bit bitter, medium-length very harmonious finish.

A very smooth (for once this is a perfect descriptor of the body and taste) and enjoyable bottling that's exactly what you'd expect from this distillery, but lacking some of the character of the single cask bottlings. One of the best if not the best heavily sherried OB in the "€100 or less"-category at the moment.

The leathery, faintly waxy oloroso notes are balanced impeccably by the fatty, slightly smoky, faintly coppery distillate. A fair amount of various chocolate confectionary can be found as well. A few drops of water, less than a teaspoon, may be called for to get the best experience.

  19. Fundramental scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

An ecellent entry into the world of Glendronach without the need to take up a loan or sell mum-in-law's car. The colous, the sweet scents of oloroso everything's there. Perhaps not the total complexity of the (older) Batch xyz bottlings, but also not the price tag. Very nice, highly recommended

92 points for 2016/02/16 bottling. tasting after 30 min in glass and it becomes a fantastic dram.
