Not very complex, but just great stuff
    • Nose
Vanilla, a very subtle smoky note, mineral, maritime, light pine needles, with time comes to eucalyptus, that's it - but what does he does well
    • Taste
Slightly ashy smoke, strong mineral onset, vanilla and creamy, without losing strength, biting already in the tongue, a lot of heat
    • Finish
The heat pushes, a bit bitterness - but quickly vanishes, then again vanilla sweet and citrusy

Very simple, very low level of complexity. The taste is quite intense, and thus my very first impression was "wow, nice stuff". However, when checking its details and searching for complex taste ingredients, unfortunately there I could not find much. The intense primary taste experience seems to stem from the high alcohol level of 58.8%ABV. This alcohol is quite ostensibly dominant. If you add water (diluting to about 46%), it quickly results in a real lacklustre whisky, boring. So this is it: An overall smooth delicate HP with an intense alcohol layer. It's OK but absolutely nothing to write home about. My (very personal) verdict: 84 points neat, 80 points if diluted to 46%. Serge gave it 90 points? A bang for your buck bottling? What? ... you find me really puzzled ...

    • Nose
A balanced composition of subtle, increasingly present smoky notes, with sweet vanilla and green apple, accompanied by a hint of eucalyptus. With a few drops of water additionally appear ripe fruit notes of pear and peach.
    • Taste
Full-bodied, with a decidedly sweet start, complemented by spicy chilli notes, creamy chocolate, coffee and roasted hazelnut. With water, at first striking, peppery tones reveal themselves, which are soon replaced by cooked fruits (apple, banana, mango) and dark chocolate.
    • Finish
Long and dry, with fine smoky notes - reminiscent of a cigar.

serge is right, this is very fine whisky and it shows that extraordinary whisky doesn´t have to be old.
the cask influence seems to be minimal but just enough.
    89/100
    • Nose
thought I could take the risk after serge scored it 90/100:
very young and straight stuff on cordite (sorry serge, it´s cordite, no kerosene ;-)). indeed it´s rather mineral and behind there is a fresh fruitiness on peaches and sour apples.
it´s a little alcoholic but this does not bother me in this case.
in fact it´s rather chiselled like good riesling, which I always like. so don´t expect a nose monster!
a drop of water brings out a faint nuttiness.
    • Taste
really very good. slightly sharp attack but again it´s very chiselled. mineral, fruity (more on citrus this time), very fresh and mouth watering.
    • Finish
      medium, very clean, still mineral

B+ (89 if you must); Swims very well. Very good and complex—just below exceptional.
    • Nose
Lemony honey, sweet lavender, vanilla ice cream, banana candy, and tobacco leaf. Cumin surprisingly comes out strong after a while.
    • Taste
Carries over from the nose with the sweet lavender, grilled lemon, and honey. Add some sweet pear, creamy banana, and a hint of that cumin. A little dry, chalky smoke.
    • Finish
Long and tingly. Banana, vanilla, lavender, and cumin.

Highland Park 2007/2016 (58.8%, Gordon & MacPhail, Cask Strength, refill bourbon barrels, casks # 15603510-15603515) Five stars How many great HPs have we already found within G&M’s ‘Cask’ series? Dozens – granted, including the older white/cream labels. Colour: white wine. Nose: starts kerosene-y, which I enjoy, gets then rather mineral, which I enjoy just as well (chalk, flints), and rather goes towards fruits after that (citrons, grapefruits, rhubarb). Impeccable. With water: menthol first, then various citrus fruits, sweet barley, and a touch of vanilla. Did I tell you I thought this was impeccable? Mouth (neat): wonderful at high strength, extremely lemony and chalky, with an oily mouth feel. Very pure, very zesty. With water: perfect lemon, green apples, green tea, and always this chalkiness that I like so much. Finish: long, ultra-clean. Perfect tart fruits and an entrancing minerality. Comments: this baby may well win this month’s bang for you buck contest! SGP:651 - 90 points.
