In any case, it doesn't take a lot of water, so it lags behind a little in the taste, it's a delicate whisky. The aromas on the nose are stunningly good. Larger sips overcome the excessive dilution and then it unfolds great in the taste. Gets really tasty. Nice interplay of oranges, herbs, mild spices and a slight sweetness. Sourness dominates for me. Was a PLV cracker back then, now you pay what it's worth in 2022. 90/100
    • Nose
Without water: sherry, sherry, sherry. Reminds me a lot of Aberlour A Bunadh. Dessert flavors like creme brulee, caramel, toffee, along with sweet fruits. Especially red berries, plums, cherries, dates.
With water: Now it becomes much more dynamic and multi-dimensional. Citrus fruits come through, especially really juicy oranges and orange zest. The dessert aromas are now strong in the background, vanilla and toffee still shine through. Slightly herbal, green tea. Cinammon. Flowery. Honey. currants. Very nice. Later, the vanilla comes through again more. raisins. It fluctuates between citrus fruits, dessert aromas and sherry aromas.
    • Taste
very fruity, slightly bitter, lots of sourness. Lemons, oranges, a little vanilla, green tea again. Creamy, still very citrus-dominated, honey, cherries in the background... very mineral. Anise. Herbal tea.
    • Finish
Cask wort and orange zest remain. Gunpowder green tea bitter on the palate. A nice bitterness. Wax lines the mouth. A little liquorice. Mint.

Heretically I hypothesize that this one would've been better off in a good ex-bourbon barrel as it sports slight sulphur off notes. Other than that a very nice dram.

The 1988 Blair Athol by Signatory all have something, and I think the Wine treated Butts are even better
    • Nose
Chocolate, cereals, clearly marzipan, espresso, wax, rather subtle raisins, whenever I stop smelling I have extremely espresso in my nose, overall more dry than sweet, also a good portion of acidity, caramel biscuits, which are often served with coffee, after the first sip, sweeter here too, lots of caramel
    • Taste
oily, here a lot of raisins, concentrate, also here dry, espresso, slightly floral, grassy, tingling, sour
    • Finish
sticky, raisins, dark chocolate, still intense and long-lasting, pleasant, apple peel, now also light fruit sweetness, it becomes lighter, sweetened herbal tea, slightly tart on the palate

  7. Tom na Gruagaich scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

A very strong representative who does not convince in the nose at the beginning, but airs it out. Nevertheless, the strength of the whisky is not the nose, but the mouth and the finish, which is almost perfect and intense.
    • Nose
at first quite bristly, sour, sulfur. But after 30 minutes it becomes smoother, sherry notes, fruity, slightly balsamic, the sulfur is discreetly held back. With water it becomes rounder, fruity, but also a little more sulphurous.
    • Taste
sweet but strong, sherry notes, red fruits, fine acidity, balsamic vinegar, then a lot of wood without becoming too much. More harmonic with water and with great strong, spicy sherry and wood notes.
    • Finish
Spice, wood, sherry, smoke, some balsamic vinegar, menthol, old and ripe, no sulfur and very strong.

A great old matured sherry malt.
    • Nose
      90 90
Dark fruits, raisins, prunes, some menthol, with cocoa in dark chocolate. Slightly musty / musty / sulphurous. No oak (or everything else drowns it out)
    • Taste
      90 90
Sweet at first, then a violent tingling and biting on the tongue, pepper. The biting is there again, then sweetness, plum jam, spicy forest honey, leather, and yet still clearly oak.
    • Finish
      89 89
Significantly long and warm. Pepper remains for now, only a little bit of dried fruit, cocoa and dark chocolate behind.

Would you tap Oloroso? Meets booty scheme already quite good. Great nose, pleasant to drink, only the finish remains comparatively back.
    60.6%? Really? Well integrated!
Refill does not surprise me, after 28y would be the usual broth.
    Yes, he looks old.
    Delicious thing anyway!

Notes from a blind online chat tasting.
    • Nose
      90 90
Na restrained I do not think so. Malt sweet, beet syrup. Here, the tickling alcohol but significantly less in the nose. Mineral notes come up. Menthol can be guessed, now that you say it I have cocoa. Fresh forest mushrooms. That's probably the musty one. I definitely like the nose a lot better! (Compared with https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/103713/glenturret-1988-sv#note-container)
Wow, with heat that's really mushy! However, the alcohol bites me now. Is now increasingly sour. Faßsäure, which should also be a few days older.

After the first sip: Yeah, now the nose is malty. Delicious! Pretty nice! Musty, sweaty, yet sweet and delicious ...
    • Taste
      89 89
Dark with a decent portion of oak at the front. Herbs, menthol, beet syrup, plum jam and a decent portion of coffee also in the mouth. The mouthfeel is oily, the onset strong, 58% I could well imagine.

In the second sip significantly more acid, but quite pleasant!
Objection: Quite good nose, but plentifully sharp and impetuous in the mouth.
Hm, I think that's not so bad in the mouth ....
    • Finish
      87 87
Amazingly, rather short. Dries briefly and leaves only a little bit of menthol and acid on the palate.
In the second sip now also dark chocolate.

a very nice bottling from a less known distillery ; great balance between spirit, wood and sherry influence ; not a sherry bomb for sure but extremely pleasant and well integrated.
all about cocoa (agree with other reviews on this one) and an iron fist in a velvet glove.
great stuff and great value for such presentation !

    Gorgeous color!
    Maroon.

A great aroma. Out of the ordinary.
A bitter sweetness of ripe, fermented fruits.
    Apple, plum, berries.
    Old, damp wood.

    Yes, he has bums!
Wow, my mouth is filled with warm aromas, lots of saliva, ... furry feeling.

The taste of the wood a bit more intense, a little spicier.
    I dare not add water.
Now there is also the vanilla over the glass.

    Terrific!

Wow- what a Blair Athol! Have been the bottle for over half a year now, just did not dare to open it and have first tried all the other BAs from the 1988 series. I liked Cask 6843 best with 54.5%. This one does it to him - just that he is completely different. For me an absolute hammer whisky, which demands a lot. But if you give him time (and next time I'll definitely take more time), he'll surely reveal more and give him more. 28 years, Single Cask Sherry Butt, and filters, undyed, cask strength - what more could you want. THAT is the high art for me to get it out of this way. For me still (a tick) better than the 1987 Linkwood MoS and until now in 2018 the best whisky.
    • Nose
BÄÄÄÄM! He almost kills you in the nose. dark chocolate, dates, dried fruit, green apple, cinnamon, sour berries, dark chocolate, cocoa, orange peel ... what do I know, what else comes to light ... lying on the glass? With some water, some caramel and plums get through. Very sweet, very voluminous, mega sherry. I`m lovin it :)
    • Taste
WHAT a start! Power without end and the impressions of Nosing continue in the mouth. The sweetness is even more pronounced. For that I have diluted to about 58%, nothing burns. The alcohol is very well integrated. Sherry, cinnamon, chocolate, orange, leather, oak, spice-ingenious! Sweetness and spice alternate, salivation is massively stimulated. Strong!
    • Finish
Seeeeeeeeeee long-wonderful. Initially, the various sweet flavors hold. If you stroke your tongue along the edge of the jaw, you'll get the full load of it again. Sweet and sticky. Slowly it gets a bit drier in the mouth and it makes the spicy notes noticeable. Oak, dark chocolate, cocoa powder, cinnamon, the green apples are back. The longest keeps logically the spice of the oak paired with the notes of coffee and cocoa. class

Really good, but a bit too intense in terms of alcohol. 88P.
    • Nose
Intense Christmas spices with a good pinch of nutmeg and pepper. Add dry, dark fruits (plums, raisins) and lots of nuts. The alcohol slides on and is tickling. After some time, leather is added.
Water : Water tames the palate a bit. A sweet sneaks through, but does not really dare. The plums become more intense and herbal drops are added.
    • Taste
Wow. Intensive. The aromas, but also the alcohol. Astringent. Trail mix, nutmeg. Tobacco is spreading and dominates the Nachschmecken.
Water : Somewhat softer, but the whisky remains tart and intense. It does not tingle so much on the tongue.
    • Finish
Long, dangling with tobacco and dry fruits.

awesome PLV, a powerful Sherrymalt I just want to have in the glass from time to time - filled just right.
    • Nose
Beef broth with lovage, teriyaki sauce, molasses, raspberry pulp, blackcurrants. With a few drops of water, it is much fruity - fragrant dynamic red fruit, mint, eucalyptus, rosemary and a hint of resin and wax mingles with oak and Christmas spices, the nose is always on the move - sometimes sweet, sometimes sour fruity, then spicy again - very big nose-cinema
    • Taste
intense red berries, honey, dry oak, mint spreads on the tongue - dark chocolate with a very high cocoa content, nutmeg, leather, tobacco, very pleasing, dynamic
    • Finish
chocolaty, tangy spicy oak, pepper, waxy oak

  23. Marko_I did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

Really great, powerful, full-bodied whisky, which just suits me for what it is - I have the feeling that if I add water to it, I will not get it better (I would have a whole bottle of it and I would not be at 60%, I would probably rather let that, than that I dilute, too bad drum). SV CS at it's best, with 150 € / 28J. (I think it was even cheaper) a good buy.
    • Nose
Wow, powerful, only full Christmas - dried fruit, cinnamon, chocolate, Spekutlatius ... then dry, cocoa, walnut, tobacco, old leather, a touch of warm hay / horse stable - strong and intense, but does not sting, from the nose I do not feel like diluting
    • Taste
wow again - the nose impressions come in 1: 1 in the mouth over (I do not copy again), he stays in the mouth long, then it's still really dark, molasses, cough syrup, coffee, Kamillan; Again, I have no need for water

Tasty part, can be well drink even on warmer days because it is so pleasantly sour and fruity. Age does not write this malt on the big board, but it shows only very subtle. The nose is pleasantly fresh and complex. Confirm the 91 points I gave him the last time.
    • Nose
Full, aromatic, tingling in the nose. Sweet and sour berries. Everything is there, blackberry, raspberry, strawberry, currant. Very fruity, sweet with often sparkling acidity like limes, grapefruit. Fresh nose, minty. Peppermint. Some chocolate. Later, Orange comes along. Fresh apricot cake. Mürber cake dough. Cinnamon. Red grapes.
    • Taste
fruity, sweet, berry. Strawberries, blackberries, some caramel. The sweetness is beautifully kept in check by pleasantly balanced but strong acidity.
    • Finish
fruity, again berries, warm, aromatic. Red berry cocktail. Sweet, sour, furry. Gentle candy dresses the mouth while nausea nibbles pleasantly on the tongue and cheeks. The oak barely peeks out, the age shows up rather on the tart of the various berry flavors.

certainly a very delicious Blair Athol. I can not understand the hype somehow. Compared to the other flower vase Blairs (eg WID: 63057) I do not taste much of a difference ... Color makes hype

Great malt. Always worth his money. Actually, exactly my thing. But now in the summer I prefer a Bourbon barrel ripened and a cold beer. This one is something for the cold days. But they will come back soon.
    • Nose
Wow, the alcohol is still very present. But immediately strike me very fine sherry flavors. Very malty. Raisins. fresh pipe tobacco, old leather. Very pleasant. You can tell that he already has a few years on his back. I'll add another drop of water. Now comes walnut and dark chocolate. some orange peel. After 15 minutes the chocolate gets lighter. Sweet, honey? .... Yes, there is, but more in the background. Very beautiful. I know that sounds weird ... but now apple pie with chocolate.
    • Taste
Despite twice water, still very strong start. very good sherry. Oranges, coffee, espresso. The saliva flows in streams. The second sip I have the caramel ... Toffee. Fermented dark fruits. And again coffee. Is now always fruity.
    • Finish
: Very long! The palate is getting drier. Coffee, and now light chocolate sound for a long time.

Crazy how different 2 casks with same vintage date can develop.

6854 is less fruity but more intense where 6843 delivers a nice banana fruit palate.

If I compare the 4 1988 vintaged Blair Athol my ranking would be:1) 6857 LMDW

    2) 6854 SV

    3) 6843 SV

A really excellent drop. My first Blair Athol, but certainly not my last. Beautifully integrated old sherry with a good portion of pleasant leather / tobacco and wood flavors. Very delicious!
    • Nose
1.Nase: Cherry with a slight menthol note - "Pulmoll" comes to my mind. Everything accompanied by pleasant wood tones. Fruity but still called dry. At least the first nose shows a really nice balance of flavors and the proud age of the drop.

2.Nase: fruit acid again in the direction of cherry but also brown sugar as an association of sweetness always comes through now. Much spiciness, etc. Liebstöckel or Maggy comes back to my mind. But also a walnut or a general Nussigkeit I associated myself with this drop. But pleasant as an opponent to the beautiful fruit or sweetness that escapes from the glass. The alcohol is in any way unpleasantly noticeable. Amazing at over 60 volts!
    • Taste
1.Eindruck: Good start, tingling is in the border area, but still pleasant; sour / fruity and pleasantly nutty in the transition to the oak aromas, which go very much in the direction of strong black coffee and strong tart chocolate. Everything was very pleasant for the first sip.

2.Eindruck: In the second attempt briefly really sweet, but then develops quickly to more set fruit flavors, which herald the departure with beautiful leather or tobacco and oak tones. Time in the glass does the drop very well. The alcohol gives the impression of cold in the mouth, but without burning.
    • Finish
1.Imprint: The finish is really long. The middle of the tongue is covered with a residual fruit and a touch of bitterness, very nice!
2nd impression: Again, the finish itself is characterized by coffee, cocoa and dark chocolate. Departure is just as pleasant to call long, spicy and not too musty-tart. Wonderful!

  36. Gloin scored this whisky 91 points Expert Senior

The very first Verriechen stings the alcohol a little bit in the nose and hides the wonderful diversity behind it. It is therefore worthwhile to leave the whisky. Then he unfolds his full potential. Also in the mouth his greatest strength is the complexity. This is a whisky that demands attention and wants to be explored. Those who apply this patience will be rewarded. The finish shows the age of the whisky that dominates oak. I like the whisky a lot, but it's demanding.
    • Nose
Cinnamon, candied apples, Gran style on pancakes, cherry, dry sherry, oak, earth, autumn leaves on the forest floor, but behind it a little bit away, something slightly acidic, fresh, maybowl, very complex, after a while suddenly very fruity and sweeter, some tangerine, sweet plums
    • Taste
Strong onset, glow on the tongue, slightly astringent, Glühweinbonbons, cherry, a lot of spicy oak, but little bitterness, tart and sweet notes in conflict In the second sip, the influence of the oak becomes stronger and pushes back the fruit, dry sherry, the bitterness increases, without displacing the sweet undertone.
    • Finish
At the end there is the oak, bittersweet, a reminder of the plum, mighty wood influence, cocoa powder, some cinnamon, long

I really liked this one - under one condition: It needs time! At first, a strong alcoholic scent, like sweet Bourbon disseminates from the glass. Give it 5 minutes or ten, and the nose gets more complex. Unbelievable how this is drinkable entirely without any water. With each sip it gets better and better. Sherry coming through, the nose opens up, now red berries incoming. With a lot of time passing by, I can distinguish some mint notes. Of course there is some wood noticeable, but luckily not too much to spoil the fun.

At first I was a little disappointed with the restrained nose (but can be due to the day!). But this whisky is a wonderful example of how a malt can come out of itself and open up when given time and muse. The cinnamon chocolate note is unique. The taste is the heart of this drop and convinces all along the line, especially with little water. The age hides the Malt also not. The initial fear of malnourished alcohol at over 60% is completely unfounded. Great!

Addendum: At a later tasting this malt has convinced me completely! A far less restrained nose than in the Erstverkostung. Significantly more sherry, more cocoa, many soft fruits (currants, blackberries). Still a nice balance and not overbearing. The taste confirms his strong impression also undiluted! A really great matured malt!
    • Nose
Very clear chocolate in the first nose, no alcohol (!), A lot of cinnamon, initially restrained, now it opens slowly with dried fruit, dates in chocolate mantle, dried orange peel, the cinnamon is very dominant (I've rarely seen so clearly in a whisky now comes sour berries, this fruit acid, which gives an old whisky a wonderful fresh fruitiness, now it is really great, tart chocolate, decent dustiness, old parchment, cocoa powder, in the second nose comes significantly more sherry, more fruits like prunes and cranberry jam, also a hint of vanilla and caramel
    • Taste
first sweet on the tip of the tongue, a lot of sherry, again acidic fruitiness, then the malt with more than 60% neat on the palate, it is no alcohol note to feel rather prickling, peppery power, followed by cinnamon, chocolate, orange, leather, oak , oily and full
The second sip with a few (few !!) drops of water is a revelation, much sweeter, much more fruity, the peppery power goes back just so that it is consistent, in addition to the old wood flavors again more in the foreground. Great!
    • Finish
Pepper, getting dry, old dried walnuts, old sherry, cocoa powder, dark chocolate, raisins, old oak, dried out old tobacco, long finish, beautifully continues the "old" impression.

Wow, what a sample! Chocolate, cocoa powder and cinnamon dominate the complete tasting. The high alcohol content creates an extreme pepper flavor, even while tasting the sample I ordered a large bottle. An absolutely cool part!
    • Nose
Chocolate and an incredible cocoa flavor rise immediately after pouring the sample out of the glass. While the Blair Athol shines amber in the glass, tough and oily streaks run slowly back into the glass. Chocolate and cocoa powder dominate the first impression. Slowly, dark berries and a pinch of cinnamon come to the fore. The cinnamon exudes an incredible spiciness, orange peels fall into the cinnamon powder while slowly making the alcohol noticeable.
    • Taste
Immediately, the cinnamon-cocoa mixture dominates the first sip, then explodes a hefty load of pepper in the mouth. Spicy wood follows, then milk chocolate and cinnamon become noticeable again. The taste is slightly nutty in freshly ground espresso. The palate still glows with the now very dominant pepper, a touch of leather and dry leaves let the taste fade away slowly.
    • Finish
The taste still exudes its peppery aroma, the chocolate and cinnamon keep the finish alive. Slightly dry wood and a very pleasant walnut flavor will be remembered for a long time.
