  1. DocF scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

Pure and yet not easy: cool :. Does not need water.
    • Nose
Strong, smoky, exhaust fumes, long drawn green tea, old, dirty, oily engine, reminds me of Lagavulin: eek:, behind floral, lilac, after 20min soapy, lavender, the smoke is gone, green gooseberry
    • Taste
Soft, oily, fumes, freshly sawn wood, lilac, blocky, later less smoky, floral, white wine, lavender, still Lagavulin: eek:
    • Finish
Milk coffee, tea, tar, oil, lilac, lavender, long and malty

This one puzzled me, it really has a touch of casette tapes! That's something I never encountered before in a whisky. It really is a twosided dram: gentle and fresh versus unlikely 'industrial'. Very interesting to try one or two drams of, but no buy-a-bottle material for me.
    • Nose
      83 83
An unusual nose with casette tapes, vinegar and macaroons. More usual scents also come through: a lot of flowers, some honey, pears and melons.
    • Taste
      85 85
Full in the mouth, but rather bipolar! One the one hand it's gentle and fresh with citrus fruits, mint leaves, elderberry and cream. On the other hand it's more industrial with rubber, exhaust gas, a bit of salt and vinegar and even a bit of smoke.
    • Finish
      86 86
Warmer and sweeter, less industrial. Raisins, honey, apples, bitter mandarins and salted peanuts. A touch of smoke and that awkward illusion of casette tapes again!

I have tropical fruits in my nose. Bananas and mangoes come to mind right away.
The alcohol is quite well integrated and stings only minimally in the nose at the beginning.

Lemons are there in the taste. In addition a caramel note.

The finish is medium long. It initially flashes slightly bitter oak. Then I have very subtle roasted aromas and hay.

The nose was promising, but on the palate it goes south, I’m afraid. The lavender is too dominant.
    • Nose
Fresh and fruity on pears, melon and even some lime, but with a dark edge. I can only describe it as woodsmoke. There is a candy-like quality, which is quite nice in this case.
    • Taste
Despite the high ABV, the arrival is soft on citrus fruit and pears, but the candy now turns to lavender which then becomes quite perfumy. A touch too soapy to my taste. The woodsmoke is prominent and reminds me of a hearth.
    • Finish
The finish is long and sweet, with quite some oak, but the soapiness lingers too long.

I liked the lemon candy side quite a lot, but it gets a bit too dry and bitter for me at the end.
    • Nose
      86 86
Very lemony and lively. Saw dust, and freshly removed tree bark. White wood. Very fresh too, with a nice whiff of eucalyptus. Valda pastille.
    • Taste
      87 87
Very pleasant delivery, with some nice lemon candy, although getting relatively dry and a little hot. A nice grassy balance, with soft liquorice.
    • Finish
      82 82
Quite long, with a growing grassy bitternerss.

  8. Captain.Islay scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

A basket with bright fruits on the summer meadow, the barrel remains in the background, the mature distillery character comes into its own here. It looks slightly perfumed and I am missing a little something about it. Still, there is enough to discover and the alcohol is well integrated.
    • Nose
      88 88
White grapes, white peach, Prosecco, elderberry, lime, dry hay, jasmine tea
    • Taste
      88 88
slightly oily, some wax, white grapes, pear, dried meadow herbs, some lavender, nutmeg
    • Finish
      87 87
Medium length, pear, lime, valerian, nutmeg, chicory

Quite a lovely surprise. Lately not many Glen Elgin's around, so this one is nice.
    • Nose
Light and subtle, Quite the spring orchard with fresh apples, pears and blossom. White sugar melon.
    • Taste
On the palate also the mixture of light and fruity. This time more pineapple and mandarins. Cigar box in the end.
    • Finish
This subtle dram hasn’t got a big ending, but it lingers on in fruit and gentle sweetness.

A beautiful malt with pronounced herbal notes and floral impressions, even a little salt / coast is there ...
    • Nose
      Slightly salty, floral, honey and lovely, pleasant and inviting;
    • Taste
Distinctive herbal note, floral meadow, floral, honey again, wood / oak, zirtone and a little acid (fruit or wood?), More herbs!
    • Finish
      Medium to long, with not too few impressions of the wood, pleasantly warming;

    • Nose
Full and sweet, fruity, citrus, tangarines, peach, some pears and apples. Vanilla, herbal notes, wood and cardboard.
    • Taste
Firm, fruity, apples, fresh whiff of mint, chocolate, leathery, citrus fruit and some spicy notes.
    • Finish
Keeps lingering, a bitter note, citrus fruit, spicy notes, liquorice.

On the nose, spices, then fruits (lemon, green apple), and a grassy side, with a little dust (not smoke but almost!), Return of a woody freshness! It promises!
    • Nose
malt, predominance of fruit and vanilla, grassy and minty freshness.

  18. St. Pauli scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

Not utterly complex, but very good. It reminds me of the whiskies from the past.
    • Nose
Quite fruity and grassy, with pear drops, lemon, tangerine, grass and mint. Behind that is more robust malt, slightly raw (husky, oily and earthy).
    • Taste
Medium to full bodied, not too sweet. It delivers ample barley and fruit, but also some oily, earthy, rooty elements. Think of various citrus fruits, apricot, barley, licorice, workshop (oil), tobacco, and towards the end a bitter note of ginger.
    • Finish
Medium, not so bitter as the palate suggests. The ginger doesn't push trough, it gets mixed with pepper. Then, the robust malt and the fruit return.

  19. Thermidor scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

Just my kind of whisky: distinctive and unique without having to resort to tricks. Tasted with Glen Elgin 25yo HL 12155 (90pts), Craigellachie 21yo DL 11343 (85pts) and Mortlach 22yo 1989 cask 3926 (92pts).
    • Nose
Sour leatheriness, ground spices past their sell by date, and some wet cardboard. May sound unappetizing but I'm charmed by its vivid distinctiveness. Something faintly juicy - berries of some sort. Rosemary? Water makes it decidedly more tropical with that note like pineapple juice from a tin.
    • Taste
Oh! A little stinging neat but it's fabulous already. Very unusual among contemporary whisky. Slightly stale wet wood and some bourbon from a bottle that's been open for decades. Faint spices and leather. With water there opens up this taste I though pretty much extinct in post-'80s whisky. It's hard to put in words but it's this mixture of old furniture, dry leatheriness, and a certain cellar ambience (concrete floor, faintly moldy stone etc.).
    • Finish
Long, slowly receding and tending to metals and roots.

  20. Bishlouk scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

A typical Speysider on the acidulous fruit. The plant side, sometimes for now, brings a plus to the profile, which is not worse.
    • Nose
Dry and fruity. Green apple and lemon, accompanied by a vegetal side with growing influence. Dry fruit dust coats the whole thing.
    • Taste
Softer than the nose foreshadowed. White grapes, lemon syrup, tart apple. A honey layer covers the whole.
    • Finish
The plant resurfaces and pushes the fruit to the side. He brings with him a certain dryness.

Not an easy fruity speysider, it has a malty core but also lots of spices and milk chocolate. Not bad at all.
