Bourbon matured Bunnahabhain. Nice to try as a variation to all those beloved sherried ones. Very curious. In my opinion bourbon matured versions give better insight to the basic profile that Bunna offers. It’s not dominated by all kinds of heavy flavors that are brought in by sherry casks.
    • Nose
This is definitely not a first fill but also not a refill. I suspect a second fill since it’s right in between fruitiness and spiciness. Where first fill gives more fruitiness and wood influences, second fill gives more spiciness but still some fruits and is a little more subtle then first fills. Refill casks are way more to the spicy side and even more subtle then this is. It’s a rather bald Bunnahabhain. The earthy character is definitely there. Sour apple, lemon, dried herbs, mild grains like in dried breadcrumbs, wet wood and a whiff of peat. The profile is rather youthful but not unpleasant.
    • Taste
Subtle and gentle on arrival. Sweet, sour and dry. White pepper, kardemom spice, sour apple again as well as lemonjuice. A whiff of cinnamon is present as well. This Bunna gives rather grainy/spirit-like palate. It never gets sharp or edgy though. Interesting since it would have been also logical if the palate would be all over the place. Luckily it isn’t.
    • Finish
Medium length. Sweet&sour again. Therems quite some dried oakwood at first. Behind that there is vanilla, marzipan, cane sugar. The finish is definitely dominated by the spicy side of Bunnahabhain. At the very end again a whiff of peat comes through. Very subtle but it’s there. I guess it is the result of them not cleaning the stills after a distillation run for peated Bunna’s.

As I suspected on the nose this is a rather bald expression which has to be your cup of tea in a way, before you can appreciate this. I like this style in terms of it’s being very interesting to try it and get to know the character of Bunnahabhain in another way then just the sherried versions. Wouldn’t recommend buying a full bottle since this is something I would get bored by after say 20-30cl. Besides that; pricewise this is not interesting at all.

Feels a lot younger then a 14yo. Maybe a old cask?
    • Nose
      80 80
A little spirity, fruity and a bit of hay. Doesn't really smell like 14yo but smells younger. Probably an older cask.
    • Taste
      79 79
Sweet and sour, not very Bunna. Little hay, marzipan, wood sap and some caramel. Again not an active cask.
    • Finish
      79 79
Short-medium length. Some wood, a bit dry, hint of coriander. Little sweetness and vanilla when fading away.

a very fine and light Bunnahabhain, a perfect starter without corners and edges
    • Nose
      86 86
fine and balanced, vanilla, block malt, bright fruits like sugar melon and lemons
    • Taste
      87 87
light, velvety, delicate oak, vanilla cream
    • Finish
      87 87
medium-length, vanilla and tender oak remain

Easily quaffable Bunna, but rather one-dimensional. Around 95 EUR, which seems a bit steep for what you get.
    • Nose
The nose is rather dry, if you know what I mean. Loads of grain and mild peat dominate. Some play-doh, all the way in the back. Fresh bread and young cheese. Completely devoid of sweetness, with the exception of a touch of vanilla and some barley sugars.
    • Taste
The body is fine, while the palate is a lot sweeter than the nose promised. Vanilla, honey, barley sugars and some Reine Claude plums. A mild smokiness develops, but I would not call this one peaty. Reminds me more of woodsmoke than peat, in fact.
    • Finish
The finish is medium long, showing some spices.
