What a parcel of casks! I agree that maybe this isn’t the strongest one, but it’s still beautiful stuff. This style tugs at my heartstrings.

SR never disappoints properly, but is definitely not one of the top 30-40% of them.
    • Nose
Nice mixture of an initial almond and marzipan sweetness and shortly afterwards fruit acid, pineapple juice, grapefruit slices, papaya, mango, coconut, pear, fennel, cumin, ginger, lemongrass
    • Taste
Pineapple, grapefruit with shell, papaya, mango, coconut, almonds, marzipan, toffee, light tobacco, some menthol, star fruit, fennel, nutmeg, ginger, lemongrass, cumin
    • Finish
Again an acid spike, astringent, grapefruit, pineapple, kiwi with shell, but not as long as some other SR

These 73's are all so tasty. So enjoyable to have a chance to sample from. This is no different. Absolute pleasure to nose and taste. Each has their own idiosyncrasies but, at the end of the day, incredible!

N- Clean and pure morning dew, lightness at the forefront with natural eucalyptus and pine saps closing in from a distant. Subtle oak extract seeps thru in the middle with light nutty aroma. Remains soft and elegant but evolving at gentle pace, vanilla, ripe fruits with sweet tobacco, as well perfume-y potpourri,bread-y and expensive toffee candy. Exceptionally complex and multi-layers with undertow but remains calm. (93/23)

P- Oak solid with well integrated soft spices, playful sour fruits at the back palate. Like the coat of phenol as it should be from an old malt that leave with frizzy bitterness. (91/22)

F- Long, and again is elegant, seems has gone but it come back to you overtime with the sticky sour fruits feel at the back palate, mossy, moist fudge. (91/22)

Body / Balance- 93/23. +1 for an old malt.

    • Nose
Unripe bananas, unripe or even pickled mangoes, honey tea
    • Taste
Oaky, sweet! Very sweet, buttered corn, passion fruit nectar, vanilla, dark honey
    • Finish
Passion fruit, honey with hints of oak,

gave that hints of a tomatin finish.

Old Speyside 1973/2016 (47.8%, Eiling Lim, 118 bottles) I think the 1973s are less common than the 1975s. Colour: gold. Nose: some kind of walnut cake covered with grappa-flavoured icing sugar and full of honeydew and bits of orange zests. More ‘natural’ barley-y notes after that, wash, earth, perhaps even mashed turnips, all that being just perfect. Perhaps a drop of Japanese Bulldog sauce (new on Whiskyfun! ;-). I think it is an exceptional nose. Mouth: typical early 1970s Speysider, quite in the vein of all those 1972 Caperdonichs, or 1970 Glen Grants or Benriachs… Stewed orchard fruits covered with honey and many soft spices from the oak. Some propolis as well, again. I know some of you do not know what propolis is, well it’s something that the bees make out of wax and various resins that they gather from some trees. Highly antiseptic. Excuse me? Yeah, just like old whisky. Finish: medium, perfect. Waxy honey and softly spiced fruits. Some kind of Thai dish? A little green pepper in the aftertaste. Comments: high category, as expected. Hope we’ll see more of these in 2017 (and 2018, 2019, 2020…) SGP:561 - 91 points.

Old Speyside 43 yo 1973 (47,8%, Eiling Lim 2016, 12th release, Fino cask, 118 btl.)

Nose: full of beehive notes, beeswax, pollen, with some old and rather fragrant, minty oak, or sandalwood. Quite some blonde tobacco too. Orange peels, greengages, hints of dried apricot and herbal honey. Mentholated notes. Light exotic spices. Very light flinty / resinous notes in the background. Mouth: oak spices, again with this resinous feeling and bright tobacco notes. Fruit teas, pollen, a little mead. The wood brings freshness instead of a tannic dryness. Something of a fruity hoppy note too. Finish: long, flavourful, with white fruits and vibrant oak spices.

Great stuff. You have to like a good dose of old oak but it’s magically fresh and vibrant. I’ve heard the source of these casks could dry up any day now. Around € 380.
