Whisky Reviews for Ben Nevis 1995 MBl

The smell is extraordinary and exotic, very mild despite probably high alcohol content. Everything is harmoniously interwoven. The taste is pleasantly mild, but also a little strange. Something unusual resonates, many of the whisky-typical flavors are missing. The finish fits in harmoniously and fits the overall picture.
It tastes good to me, but it does not taste like a typical whisky. This hardly bothers me today and the overall impression is positive.

    blind tasting
    • Nose
Sweetish, exotic fruits, papaya, mango, a little bit of lime, but also some strawberry, with time comes something earthy, some woodruff, mayowowle, a bit spicy
    • Taste
mild onset, soft body, very sweet, tangerine, orange, again mango, but less than in the nose, little oak, some caramel, slightly acidic undertone, beer with lime, corona
    • Finish
For the first time recognizable oak, the sweetness decreases, slight bitter aromas come to it. While I could taste flesh before, it is now the slightly bitter fruit peel, tart apple juice, again exotic beer

Nose: A basket of overripe exotic fruits immediately pours into your nose. Complemented by a fine creme brulee note. Very refreshing pineapple and papaya perfumes prevail. Despite the 49.7% no alcohol in the nose. It just smells great. Somehow after vacation.
Taste: This is where the impressions of the nose continue. Then comes the noticeable alcohol and then the oak of 21 years of storage. After two teaspoons of water, the Nevis becomes totally supple. Here are only the exotic fruits and vanilla kipper, without being too sweet. It is a very "clear" taste. Great distillation! Malt continues to evolve and is always interesting in a big dram.
Finish: Fairly long finish that turns bitter at the end. This may not be for everyone, but it's no surprise with a 21-year-old whisky.
Conclusion: Again a horny Ben Nevis by Donald and Andrew Hart. There were, in my view, only four better ones from Maltman, of which two were over 40 years old. In this respect, this Nevis is here very far ahead and gets from me 9/10 points. I really like this whisky style.
At Ben Nevis, the ghosts often part. That will probably be less the case with this bottling. - here: Glehner whisky tasting.ü

A very good all day DRAM from Ben Nevis
    • Nose
Peppery, a little apple or lemon, fresh herbs.
    • Taste
At first very sweet on the tongue. In the throat it burns a bit but then comes a lot of straw or fresh hay in connection with apples and a pear.
With the hay tasting at the beginning you might almost think that a bit of smoke has got lost in the whisky.
    • Finish
Relatively short but very pleasant on the tongue

The quality is high and the whisky is complex, it needs water, but it can also be watered down. I like the Ben Nevis from the sherry keg usually better.
    • Nose
Starting with fresh herbs, hay bales, melted butter, ice candy, yellow fruits can be guessed at first, even a light alcoholic freshness, short pastry, wood department at the hardware store, come diluted apricots, bark mulch, star fruit, Haribo juice berries and mouse bacon
    • Taste
malty, light pepper, the diluted taste is much sweeter, some vinegar and oil
    • Finish
the woody basic tone runs through, to grapes, with water are to find in the finish hazelnuts, again spicy and medium-long

A very nice part. The local contact has already put a bottle away
    • Nose
The first sniffing is quite restrained. The spice of Ben Nevis is above all else. That's why I grab some water right away and lo and behold: yellow-fruity flavors paired with oak, forest honey and scents of fresh pastries and hay pour out of the glass. The whole thing looks especially ripe and very well connected.
    • Taste
Then he shows what he can do. On the palate, this whisky is one of the best I have ever had. This is where the tropical fruits finally come to light, which I had hoped for. Great! He has power without biting. The oak is very light and is not bitter at all. The longer it is in the mouth, the creamier it gets. This is exciting.
    • Finish
The whisky is the pure opposite of astringent. The finish is not so long, but it is incredibly pleasant and mature. You always want to reach for it and drink. Dangerous!

From a deep dark bourbon barrel, however, comes the 21-year-old Ben Nevis , a dream drop, the exotic fruity with lots of papaya, guava and pineapple occurs. The finish is wonderfully long and creamy.
