Metallic and chemical off-notes. No enjoyment. No. 2 is much better. Quite rough and spirity, too young to bottle.

sweet berries, chemical note so plastic, slightly increasing gum, slightly sherry, minimal smoke
with water: softer, more sherry, paper / cardboard (slightly damp)

    Colour:
    beautiful, light amber color.

    Aroma:
Aromatic and warm smoke, dried / dried fruits such as figs and raisins, a little honey, pleasant and outrageously aromatic for a spirit ...

    Taste:
The impressions gained while sniffing continue at this point: aromatic with smoke and light spice, sweet, a little sherry, slightly oily.

All in all quite harmonious and dangerously drinkable, the “youthful” only comes out a little when sipping, but from my point of view it is by no means to be regarded as negative.

    Departure:
Sweet, pleasantly spicy and smoky, “looong” and soft fading, at the end light sherry notes and a hint of salty ...

So young and yet an amazing amount of “character”.

I didn't dare to add a few drops of water for fear of “messing it up”!

    Very well done chapeau!

    Impressive

It is going to be a while before we get a single malt from this Highland distillery, but like many new players, they also released some of their spirit. On the one hand it enables us to sample something from Ardnamurchan already, on the other hand it provides them with much needed funds. This Limited Release No 1, spirit from 2015 bottled in 2016, is sherry matured. Both oloroso and PX casks were used.

The nose shows those were very active casks indeed. It is very sweet, aromatic and round and at first reminds me a bit of Madeira. Lots of honey, some candle wax, lovely woodsmoke and even a bit of salt in the back. After a few moments, it turns quite fruity. Berries, peach, pears. Some nuts and caramel shine through. And in the back, albeit quite subtle, is a fantastic trace of peat.

The influence of the casks is also unmistakable on the palate. But it has to be said: you first get an uppercut from both woody spices and the peat. Your mouth will be aflame. And then the soothing sherry notes kick in. Surprisingly salty, though. But impressively complex for such a young spirit. This is going in the right direction!

The medium long finish, which shows great balance between sweet, salt, smoke and bitterness, leaves the mouth parched at the death.

Impressive, I must say. Adelphi clearly invested in very good casks. Fill those up with good spirit and you’ll soon be rewarded with a great whisky.

For a one-year spirit a very nice flavor cargo, but more of the barrel selection should be owed.
    • Nose
extremely sweet in the nose, reminiscent of Madeira. Maritime smoke, slightly salty, slightly oily. Spicy honey, pine needles and some resin. The alcohol is there and something tingles in the nose, but the spirit is extremely charged by the barrels.
    • Taste
Young, the metallic note is there, but is also covered here by the intense barrel influences. The sherry has given him sugary sweetness, plus herbal salt and a little bit of engine oil. The smoke is dry and herbal-bitter.
    • Finish
medium long, like an oil film in the neck.

  9. nallacam scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

The more I try it, the more enthusiastic I am.
    • Nose
A honey note dominates the first nose, combined with maritime bacon, vanilla and some damp forest soil. A wonderful smoker comes up and gently lays over everything. Very spicy and complex, a bit of juniper and clove and just impressive for a one-year spirit. The selection of kegs is fantastic and will make your nosing even easier.
After some time, the earthy, fencing forest notes come out more clearly, paired with a sweet, fresh fruit ... pear, ginger and apple. And above all delicious smoked ham!
    • Taste
Narurlich shows in the mouth, the youth, but what damn good barrels are that? A sweet, complex sherry fullness, the alcohol wonderfully integrated and not a bit spicy. Salinity, pleasant smoke, resinous wood, honey and a bit of oak bitterness fill the mouth.
    • Finish
The finish is rather middle and dry. A warm, smoky feeling remains.
      Very nicely done!

    • Taste

    • Finish
More smoke, cardboard, painted on sherry. 81

Obviously rather impetuous, but already contains quite some diversity in smell and taste. Would it be possible to get a very nice whiskey out of it.
    • Nose
Peat, earth, clay, raisins, leather, fruity, peach, pear. Nuts. Honey, vanilla. Spicy also, cinnamon.
    • Taste
Peperig, sharp. Honey, peach, apricot. Light peat. Wood. medicinal touch. Nuts.
    • Finish
Slightly peppery, sweet and also somewhat medicinal. Bit of bitter undertones.

  23. St. Pauli scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

Potential is the key word here. It's good, but young. It makes me think of a style in the direction of what the Laga 16 used to be. Yet, it has to grow into this position.
    • Nose
Soft but dry peat, putty, play doh, heather, brine, pear, cinnamon, vanilla, ocidised grape, nutty Oloroso, raisins
    • Taste
Oily, peppery, quite some punch. It comes across as brinier than on the nose, with antiseptic, iodine, peat, sherry and dried fruit. It's quite nutty too: salted almonds.
    • Finish
Oily, briny, nutty and with soft spice. Dried fruit too: raisins and dates.

This is the first release from the Ardnamurchan distillery way out on the west coast of Scotland's Highland region, owned by Adelphi.  Legally it is a PBS as it is under 3 years old but has been aged in a combination of Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez casks.
