They say that would be the worst of the three Brodir batches, but I don't think it's that wrong at all, but I don't have a direct comparison right now, Batch 1 brought me to the port and smoke combination and or glorifies it a bit in my memory
    • Nose
Raspberry effervescent tablets, sweet, chocolate, sour, the smoke hides a little behind the port influence, light freshness flashes up again and again, a bit of mint, light roasted aromas with Hanuta, a touch of maritime notes
    • Taste
Oily, dry start, raspberries, but no more fizz, chocolate, citrus on the tip of the tongue, spicy smoke, minimal cinnamon, salt, sweeter on the second sip, quite delicious to drink
    • Finish
Now the smoke dominates, ashy, grapes, bittersweet, creamy, even raspberries, slightly nutty, the mouth is coated, sometimes the aftertaste is exactly like a port wine + smoke

Brodir is the Old Norse term for brother. The Viking language was spoken on the Orkney and Shetland Islands until the 18th century. Laphroaig's Travel Retail bottling was finished in port wine casks.

Good balance, in whisky are always absend black berries and dark chocolate. Very fruity and fresh.
    • Nose
Black berries, sea salt, sea smell, light smoked, sweet red fruits, dark honey, coffee, cinnamon, ginger, chicory, dark chocolate
    • Taste
Black berries, ginger, light smoked, light spices, medical notes, middle body
    • Finish
Short, smokey, light medical notes, spices, ginger, black berries.

Halva, a pile of smoke, sweet ashes, watercolors, oak, burnt sugar, wine, roasted nuts, smoked citrus.
    • Taste
      88 88
Sweet ash, juicy fruit in smoke, very dessert and drinkable, citrus.
    • Finish
      87 87
Smoky, ash, dessert, longer than average, wine, apricot kernel, smoked.

It smells like plum. And the red plum. Candied plums. Amena. Then the coal, the tires, the nails surge. Laphroaigish. Quickly followed by thick, mountain honey. Apricot jam. Rhubarb. Tobacco. Nice balance after a while, but it's quite sweet. Iodine which gives a nice depth. Slight medicinal touch, but discreet. Floral reflections. In the mouth, a little light. A pinch of fine salt, crushed fruit. Spices, not too strong. Paprika, turmeric. Lamb curry. Lignite. Fairly long and smoky finish, spicy, with the fruits coming up. Cola, stretto coffee.

Very nice fruity bottling. The smoke also harmonises well with the fruit that is present alongside the smoke from the first moment.
Also significantly fruitier and a little oilier than the PX-Cask. In 2019 this bottling was often just under 60€, which was a very good price for what is offered here.
    • Nose
      87 87
Hardly perceptible alcohol. Strong, phenolic smoke, some iodine, vanilla, fruitcake, preserved plums, cherry syrup and musty linen towels.
    • Taste
      88 88
Powerful start, slightly oily, well-integrated alcohol. Noticeable smoke containing iodine, pickled cherries, hazelnuts, gingerbread, espresso, dark chocolate.
    • Finish
      87 87
Medium finish. Delicate smoke and juicy chocolate cherry cake with vanilla.

Please do not take my note at 100% face value. I am a complete beginner to smoke and generally very sensitive to smoke.
My tasting notes are more from a smoker FOR smokers.
    • Nose
      82 82
      I smell smoke, sweet smoke.
Although I can still smell the port, the smoke in my nose is generally at the top.
After a lot of time in the glass, I get something like raisins, a light winey note, maybe even chocolate.
    • Taste
      88 88
Here, too, the smoke is in the foreground but I think the malt is also very sweet.
I also clearly perceive the port again and don't find that too bad at all.
Very harmonious if I can say that.
    • Finish
      83 83
In the finish, the sweet smoke remains with fruit and port.
Rather a longer finish for me because I can still feel the smoke in my mouth for a long time.

    Balance (21)
    Boring (84.5)
    • Nose
The aroma is quiet, muted ... berry notes with peat, iodized salt and hay.Vanilla and apples (21)
    • Taste
Ash, dried fruits and pastries (21,5)
    • Finish
At the finish, salt, a little wax, dried fruits and bitter ... dry bitter grass (21)

  14. Archer scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

Yes, a Laphroaig. But rather someone who looks as if he had been pressed through the barrel by a UA with a treat. The sweetness looks a bit fake, but still scratches the mark: just about works. Quite delicious, but not very "laphroa-like".
    • Nose
      86 86
Sweet and tart fruit, cloudy with haunted peat. Somewhat moldy, damp cellar, fermented fruit - in general: decay. Delicious. (Unsulphurised) raisins, dried figs. With time becoming more spicy (especially after a short covering of the glass) shows nutmeg, marjoram, chervil, thyme.
    • Taste
      85 85
Meets the tongue with a heavy sweetness of blackberries, raisins, dried figs and grapes. Oily, strong smoke note with warm tar, seaweed and hospital corridor mist. Is pretty fat and sweet on the tongue, feels viscous. Men's chocolate, espresso beans, malt, burnt caramel.
    • Finish
      85 85
Medium length, dry, smoky, spicy and sweet. The smoky note gains in intensity from behind, the spices pick up momentum again after a while, the fruit sweetness is permanently present.

    • Nose
Doux, but I've been screwing around for a tourbe poivrée et de la gomme de pneu. Le malt settles down. Pluthot frais et herbacé.
    • Taste
Tires to death! Spices and pepper dominate the roundness of the port.
    • Finish
      No major evolution.

      Enthusiasm 3/5

probably my least laphroaig experience to date. normally a huge fan of the distillery, but not this expression. It's a pity as i'd like to like it more :)

  23. Kensay scored this whisky 82 points Expert Senior

Smoke, burnt pine, sea salt and iodine
but there is no such variety in the mouth, spices and vanilla
    Aftertaste with bitterness and spices
    basic file without claims

Blindtasting from my advent calendar ....
    Tip: Cheaper Bowmore
Conclusion: Laphroaig and I are no longer friends;)
    • Nose

Medicine dominates in the first nosing, with some smoke paired with a mild fruitiness, in the background white pepper, apricot, peach
    • Taste

Medium, rather weak than complex and powerful, light sweetness, some medicine, salt
    • Finish

For me a real disappointment! Why do you do that?
    • Nose
Begins with full, sweet aromas of marzipan, jaffacake, sweet wine and pickled dried fruit. Is always sweet and orange-like creamy, almost praline-like. After some time, shy medical peat notes and some iodine show up.
    • Taste
Very vinous with enormous plum-like sweetness, then medicinal aromas, peat, smoldering coal smoke, lots of black pepper and sulfur.
    • Finish
Medium long, plum, slightly smoldering peat smoke and a trace of iodine.

    • Nose
honey, vanilla, spices and peat, the nose is dominated by exotic fruits
    • Taste
On the palate it's creamy, salty, smoked with touches of citrus.
    • Finish
The finish is long on smoke, a touch of salt, and sweetness.

A warming dram. This is my favorite winter whisky. Although it's undeniably one-dimensional, it's just really, really good. It's a port-wood peated whisky but in my opinion, it works incredibly well. It's heftily priced for a NAS but it's one of those bottles where I buy a new one as soon as the previous one is half way empty.

colour: orange / pinking... like salmon liquidized.

peat is very much present. and next to that the sweet of sweet port wine.

unfortunately, it tastes a bit unmixed... like you take a sip of peaty Lappy in your mouth and keep it in the left side of your mouth, and a sip of sweet port wine and keep it on the other side.
