Whisky Reviews for Springbank 2002 CA

7 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 88.34 points

  1. OJK scored this whisky 91 points Expert Senior

This seemingly unique profile of candied lemons, earth, oils and smoke. Perhaps less silky than some of the more aged 90's Springbank, but in a similar space to the 9 year old local barley, although with less ABV behind it. That seems to work in this case, making it more subtle and precise.

  2. Allandale scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

    A graceful remarkably vinous Springbank.
    • Nose
Very fruity, fresh pear juice, yeasty sweetness, sweet perfume. Ham notes, farmyard elements, fennel and mustard seed.
    • Taste
Very gentle, lavender like perfume, pink grapefruit and some soft orchard fruits. Added water: hints of dried sage.
    • Finish
      Lightly smoked.

  3. LordBellamy scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

Water: The alcohol is perfectly integrated, it does not need water

Conclusion: Classic Springbank, with which one can not go wrong - 87 points
    • Nose
      87 87
mineral peat, some vanilla and salty sea air, with strong leather notes and lemon cake, with some malted cereal notes
    • Taste
      87 87
nice creamy, oily, very sweet start, then come the peat and salt, the oak is very restrained
    • Finish
      86 86
long, neat peat smoke, white leather and something slightly floral, again the salty sea air, with some oak and leather

Springbank for purists. Very tasty, but something special is missing.
    • Nose
Pure Springbank, mineral, lemon, slightly salty sea air, slight smoke, including it is slightly vanilla, in contrast, the time but also brings some dill with it
    • Taste
The mineral is again in the foreground, the alcohol is not noticeable, very creamy, again vanilla, the lemon is also found again, a slightly peppery and dusty feeling is spreading
    • Finish
The smoke is now a bit space and warms everything through briefly, then the oak is present, leaving behind a nice evenly warming residual feeling with a sweet and pleasant bitterness

[December, 2016]  I found this dram in an advents calendar sampled by Cadenhead. In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50
    - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 82,5.  My
notes state it is okay to drink but nothing to remember.

  6. Bishlouk scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

A beautiful Springbank, typical but also easy to access. Easier than many other expressions at Springbank, I find. Almost "docile". It is probably a good option for those who want to discover this distillery smoothly profile quite special. 89/100 (I hesitated with 88, because I find the official Local Barley 16 a step up anyway).
    • Nose
Sea spray, crustaceans in a crate on a pontoon fishing port. A good volute of dry grass smoke. Lemon syrup as a base.
    • Taste
Sweet and approachable, at first fruity and vanilla. Very quickly the marine side, mixed with the calcareous smoke, makes its appearance to form a marriage coherent with the fruit.
    • Finish
A pinch of peppery spices, a little salt, and lemony acidity.

    Cadenhead's Official Tasting Notes:

Nose: A touch of peat, vanilla, but with a dryness, a hint of maltiness, sea salt and worn leather
Palate: Caramel, cream, underneath there is more peat coming through, dry ashy smoke and sea salt
Finish: Salted popcorn, vanilla, slight oiliness and custard creams
