Whisky Reviews for Ben Bracken 1991 Cd

  1. Marko_I did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

Not quite as mild (or thin), as you might fear in 40%, not as round / elegant, as you might expect at 25 years, the fruit notes are fine, the total flavor package for the called 50 € perfectly fine, if you Showmanship and age adds up to a bargain.
    • Nose
sweet, yellow fruits (cooked peaches, ripe banana, mirabelle), a slightly exotic touch (pineapple, Haribo Tropifrutti), honey vanilla, but also a bit dirty-spicy, not very elegant
    • Taste
Banana, peach and pear compote, clove, pepper ... Sweet, milk chocolate rather than vanilla, for 40% and 25 years not very mild, there is even something again, edgy-scratchy, robust
    • Finish
medium long, a little bit of chocolate, then dry and tart, peppery-spicy, coffee

    Tasted at WTF 2018
Had a nice tasting of 4 Ben Bracken in a row: the 25, the 27, the 30 and as final the 40!

    light and grainy, bit metallic

Ben Bracken is one of the brands under which German discount supermarket Lidl releases single malt. They have quite a few out there already. Today I will try their 25 year old Speyside expression from 2016. Apparently this was bottled by Clydesdale.
Tropical fruit and candy, those are the first things I get on the nose. Papaya, banana, mirabelles, lime, but also a bit of baby breath and Haribo bears. Mild spiciness in the guise of allspice. Very good nose indeed.
The body is somewhat light, but I can live with that. Again lots of tropical fruit, but a bit more spicy than anticipated. Could this have been virgin oak? Lovely on litchi, banana, pineapple, plums and citrus fruit.
The finish is medium long, fruity and feisty with a mildly drying effect towards the end.
Seriously underestimated malt, probably due to the fact that it is available in Lidl. But I enjoyed it a lot. And 69 EUR is of course very affordable for a whisky that matured for a quarter century. Thanks, Gunther.

    A very nice, lovely aroma.
Smells of oak, straw, cod liver oil, apricot, vanilla, apricot.

Flavor rather spicy, somewhat light, watery.
It can certainly be sniffed away by the fireplace ...

Not that complex for a 25 year old
    • Nose
Bourbon nose, vanilla, cinamon, pear, quince, a hint of lime
    • Taste
Rather dry, pear, a little soapy, a hint of honey, caramel, tray cake
    • Finish
Gets more lemony, light spicyness, sweetness is rather artificial, a bit astringent, pear does a comeback, a whiff of coffee chocolate

    no water

Conclusion: interesting nose, the taste and finish, but he then leaves behind a lot
    • Nose
      85 85
many bright fruits (mirabelles, gooseberry), honeydew melon, frosting, herbal sugar ("ricola"), subtle oak, for 40% amazing power, fresh fir green
    • Taste
      79 79
now quite flat, hardly start, disappointing to the nose, Obstler, some fruit, oak, light herbal note
    • Finish
      78 78
short, very short, but a strong sweetness, again light herbal notes, no bitterness, some soap

An altogether very decent representative of his guild. He does not have to hide from whiskys with brand names. You can use it as an all-day-drummer. I personally would have wished him a little more power.
    • Nose
sweet, honey, oranges, slightly spicy oak, slightly clove, dusty, progressively vanilla. The complexity is medium.
    • Taste
very soft, leaving a creamy mouthfeel. It starts sweet and dark red berries appear. Then comes a very present note of coffee beans and bitterness spreads. The salivation is neatly stimulated. The whisky lacks a bit of the last bite, which is certainly due to the 40%.
    • Finish
A pretty long finish with walnut closes everything.

The nose is great, but the taste is a bit watery. For the age, the finish is very short, but at the price you can not complain.
    • Nose
Citrus fruit, apple, plum, very fruity, bran, linseed, orange, dark chocolate, cognac, multivitamin juice,
    • Taste
Caramel, white pepper, clove, dark chocolate, grape seeds, some grapefruit, coriander
    • Finish
Very short for the age, chocolaty, grape seeds,
