...and yep, expectations met! This is a delicious, complex and flawless old style sherry maturation that only a 4th fill cask can do (over such a long time). The sherry is impressive but not too dominant so this is truly a sherried whisky (and not just a fortified sherry wine like many of the "sherry monsters", that nonetheless are often very delicious too). Great stuff of a lost whisky style (because both the oak quality and sherry maturation times cannot improve in the foreseeable future).
The colour is mahogany (wow, with a 4th fill!) and the nose is simply great! A perfect old style sherry with lush aromas that still leave space for the fine 'farclas malt. All very balanced and delicious to sniff, the nougat-marzipan note is both unusual and adorable! This is ultra-clean old sherry married to the bold honey-waxy-nutty 'farclas malt of the early eighties - just wow!
The taste is multi-layered and again perfectly balanced and without any flaw. It is both complex and subtle and very interesting to explore - and it is even more enjoyable to drink! Delicious (different) chocolatey flavours mix with spices and honeys and nuts and oils and waxes and... Hey, there is a very nice movie running on my palate.
The initial mouthfeel is creamy and instantly coats the whole mouth without distracting moments. The finish is of medium length and gets somewhat drying (tobacco, tannins) but this is still acceptable (and no wonder after such a long time in a sherry butt). Some water takes this away but it flattens both nose and taste, unfortunately. I like the neat dram best.
