I find the key data very exciting, because BenRiach is a distillery that I am still discovering and this seems to be a bottling with great advance praise.

This is a beautiful whisky, albeit a bit smooth at 46%.
But not every whisky has to have rough edges. Nevertheless, this one has a lot to discover here, offers variety and is a wonderful pleasure whisky.

That's why it's probably worth the 200 euros these days.

I recommend trying this whisky with a 5cl sample, because you will hardly be able to discover all facets with 2cl.
    • Nose

      91.5 blender glass
      Poah, that's a nice nose.
Super voluminous and yet so fine and clean. Not the typical mush, but still a lot and dense sherry influence.
Nutty dates, maple syrup and leather. Despite the 22 years, I find here almost no tannins or other clear traces of wood. There is always a very pleasant sweetness, like in a very high-quality dessert wine, where the sweetness is never so clumsy.

The 46 percent is perfectly adequate, but it's dangerously close to the threshold of "too obliging," albeit without jumping that cliff.
At the same time it reminds me of some Glendronach 18 and 21 that are close to dying pretty because they are too smooth.

After 20 minutes there are more fruity notes, some mint chocolate and it becomes even more structured, now offering other aroma profiles of acidity even more clearly.
    • Taste
      90 90
      89.5 Glencairn
At the beginning, there is a nice interplay of great, slightly spicy sweetness and then some acidity and some bitterness.
Here it is still a bit thinner than the nose and with the 46% it unfortunately shows even more that it is a standard.

In the middle there is a clear acid note and that makes it super exciting and distinctive. I can imagine that some people won't like it that much, but I find it very exciting given the many sherry porridge stories, because it's fine, well structured and clean on the palate too.
The oak can be tasted more clearly here.

It becomes much more bitter with water.
    • Finish
      90 90
The mouthfeel is very oily and also alternating. Medium length, almost even long and again this lightness.
Keep it exciting and not just cute or one-dimensional. Again an interplay of sweetness, acidity and bitterness on the palate.

Very full-bodied, ripe and full-fruity nose. Caramel, cinnamon, vanilla, fully ripe pears and quinces, tobacco, leather and indeed (as stated) a fine hint of mint.
    • Taste
      91 91
Heavy and full body, powerful acceleration, slightly oily. The flow of saliva is pleasantly stimulated. Plums, freshly crumbled vanilla stick, tobacco, leather, maple syrup, dates, light chocolate, fine oak.

  11. Tangtang_WhiskyYoda scored this whisky 91 points Connoisseur

wonderfully balanced malt, very full and complex. A great interplay of sweetness and acidity
    • Nose
Oranges, apricots, honey, light dates, sweet, chocolate, red apple, if you hang your nose deep in the glass comes a bit of pepper and a sourness shows up, which turns out to be very pleasant. Oak notes also come. Very full and harmonious appearance
    • Taste
a bit sour start, then the sweetness comes through and a lot of fruits show up, honey and oak come, oily, slightly creamy, some coffee and again chocolate, as well as herbs
    • Finish
Nice aromatic finish, sweet with chocolate, oak herbs, a bit tart in the background, honey, it lasts for a long time

The aromas are arranged in such a way that, on the one hand, they mesh seamlessly and, on the other hand, can be easily separated. The basic tone is comparable to an Oloroso ripening at this age, but there are also slightly acidic notes and tart influences from the wood. Oranges, limes, milk chocolate, cookie dough, sour cherries, dates, thyme and apples could be a few keywords here.
    • Taste
      89 89
Tart honey, sweet and tangy citrus fruits, spices, chocolate, grapefruit, espresso and oak dance on the tongue. In my opinion, the fruits could come through a bit more voluminous, but it is precisely the presence of the spicy and sour notes that make the taste complex.
    • Finish
      88 88
Clear oak again, plus grapefruit and cocoa.

Sooo overrated. No richness, no sweetness and a bit watery. I paid 200€ for this! Worth around half.

  21. Totoro scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

Very wood-driven, but just beautifully done.
One of those "dark ones" I can't imagine ever tiring of (and there are very few of them).
    • Nose
      91 91
Man, that's deep and dark – a quintessential dessert dram. Thick woody, winey, even slightly glue-like notes, like a really old full-term Oloroso maturation. I'd never peg this for "only" a finishing if I were to have this blind. Not necessarily complex but just immaculate in what it does. Brown sugar, cocoa powder, cinnamon, cloves, speculoos, gingerbread, mulled wine, dried dates and plums, and a whiff of dusty, damp old wine cellar. Gets me every time.
    • Taste
      89 89
Acidic and vinous to start with, all on red fruit, with this typical tongue-coating Benriach sweetness, then turning toward spices and chocolate. Not a very thick mouthfeel – this does come across *exactly* like 46 percent – but the flavors are lively, sharply defined and intense. Almost too easily drinkable. After all this winey, christmasy, sweet vibe, it actually goes out with an elegantly tart and dry feeling. Really a fun and varied journey on the palate. Very oak-forward, but without overdoing it completely.
    • Finish
      89 89
Spicy with a touch of European oak and a cranberry-style mix of sweet and sour. Leaves the teeth coated like a sugary soda. Dry, astringent, woody, nicely musty.

Holy cow is that good! I only give five stars to whiskys that are so revolutionary that they expand my connoisseur's horizon and take it to the next level, but that's a very high four on my scale.
    • Nose
      90 90
Heavy like sweetish, slightly dried plums. This base note, created by the post-maturation, covers the fact that it is a Bourbon barrel storage quite well. From typical bourbon things there is hardly anything to be found (or only with a lot of imagination). You can discover an aromatic, spicy note. Personally, I would not subscribe to cinnamon, but cocoa can easily be found deep in the glass in small smells.
    • Taste
      90 90
Honey sweetness on dark fruits (mostly plums). The fruits are almost also placed in sugar water. It gets so sweet. For me it is super mild with a very penetrating, intense taste without alcohol and edges. A little spice (very light), a little oak, a little sweet malt. Just a little bit of liquorice / liquorice.
    • Finish
      90 90
The taste simply remains for a long time, with the sweetness declining and a spicy, slightly bitter pulp aroma remaining.

  23. larswehmeier scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

A wonderful ripe and full-bodied whisky, not overlaid or too dominated by the finish, but wonderfully complex and balanced. A big movie theater!
    • Nose
Ripe, sedate first impression on the nose. Dark ripe dates in syrup. In addition, some oak and leather in the background. In between, fresh, lighter fruit aromas of raspberries, strawberries and a bit tangy-tangy orange mix up again and again.
After the first sip, significantly more chocolate and cocoa.
    • Taste
Mild. oily and silky-soft on the tongue. Very fine tingling on the tip of the tongue. Luscious dark creaks. Lots of dark chocolate. Spicy dark honey. Very slightly dry on the palate with oak and a touch of leather.
    • Finish
Pleasantly spicy and warming. Long-lasting chocolate.

The deep Mahagoni colour is as amazing as the taste. Wonderful stuff

Nose: smells like a whole room full of dried red fruits. It also smells.... old? But not in a bad way

Mouth: it somehow feels like a couple of % more of alcohol wouldn’t do it any harm. And yet still, it is a perfect combination of sweet, woody and mild spicyness. Mouth watering

Finish: my mouth just won’t stop producing saliva. Yummy yummy yummy. Feels like I could take a bath in it

Nice, dense malt. I can identify dark fruits, cherries relatively reliably and chocolate (whole milk up to 60%) predominates. Overall very deep and flattering. Unfortunately I don't really get through here, neither in the nose nor on the palate. : / therefore more 0815 Notes.

A great, complex malt that shows its age while remaining extremely elegant. Priced at my pain limit.
    • Nose
      90 90
Grapes, honey, sweet wood spice, boiled grape jelly with a tiny pinch of tonka bean, liquorice, including freshly sliced, ripe, juicy red apples, a hint of cloves is also there.
    • Taste
      91 91
"Fresh sweetness" (squeezed fresh sugar cane), wild blossom honey, a splendor of summer meadow flowers preserved in alcohol, viscous wax, fruit gum in an oily form. As a Clynelish fan, I really like that.
    • Finish
      90 90
Extremely harmonious, long finish with a balanced interplay of sweetness that keeps the mouth watering and the onset of dryness that carries great fruity waxy aromas on for a good while. The wood feels buttery soft.

Sufficient notes have already been written, so I don't have any.
A luscious sherry nose that is not at all intrusive. Looks harmonious. Smooth sherry notes in the mouth at first. Then the oak gradually builds up and the age is pleasantly noticeable.
Very tasty malt that is very consistent.

    • Nose

Subdued at first, earthy and brooding. Fresh mushrooms, black pepper, and bubbly grape juice. Rather soft overall, and very reminiscent of cognac.
    • Taste
      92 92
Very perfumed, overtly fruity arrival. I must say I have not encountered a more pronounced mixture of raspberry, plum, and blackberry yet. Furthermore, a big infusion of tea leafs and sweetened lime orange juice.
    • Finish
      90 90
Medium. Departs almost with a sensation of carbonated drinks. Blood oranges, mild caramel, and sweet tannins.

Having said that, it was one of my biggest surprises last year. Right from the start I thought: "Oha, rare barrel choice" Great cinema!
Thanks to André for the big sample! I would have definitely missed something. Today, one of my insider tips. The PLV is unbeatable. House whisky.
    • Nose
This special character already comes into its own on the nose. I like it a lot when a whisky has it all. Sweet, sour, mineral, umami, leathery and spicy. He has it. He also remains typically Ben Riach. A great nose. Everything is wonderfully connected. Light and dark fruits at the same time. A masterpiece of barrel selection.
    • Taste
I've always been a Madeira and Port fan. Here comes the third one. Moscatel! Brilliant. Thanks Ben Riach. Full-bodied, oily and supple, it simulates my organic mocha yogurt for me. The sweetness is now superimposed on the light, tart fruits and with the dominant spicy oak it goes ahead. Splendid.
It is precisely with such drams that I am grateful to “test good whisky” through this wonderful hobby.
    • Finish
Medium to long and with less sweetness, slightly nutty and slightly bitter, it slowly lets go. In the end, tobacco and dusty cocoa remain. Dry and bitter. But, everything is still very pleasant.

Very pleasant whisky, rich and beautiful on the nose with strong sherry influence and unexpected fresh mushrooms note. The taste is very rounded and balanced without any flaws, however it lacks complexity. The aftertaste is the weakest side of this single malt - short and indistinct. But in any case this is really a nice dessert whisky, though maybe too expensive for most

The nose is typical sherry. I would have even bet on PX. Raisins, figs, plums. Very cute. A little aromatic oak. A herbal mix flashes briefly. Leather is becoming increasingly fermented fruit. It is also becoming increasingly herbaceous. Cocktail cherries.

It's amazing what rates 100 these days. If this is a new benchmark of what a great whisky is the world is indeed going to hell in a hand-basket.

I can understand why some would like this as it is not a bad dram, but for $320cnd (regular retail price which I didn't not pay, thank goodness), it's fools gold. IMHO. It's way over priced for what it is.

From nose to finish it really feels like the favours are all stunted to a degree.
    • Nose
      83 83
Faint and thin dark fruit, not too much else that really jumps out and somewhat underwhelming. It's a real struggle ti get much on the noise.
    • Taste
      83 83
Muted dried fruits and quite bitter. Almost no sweetness, not that I look for it it just seems to be missing to some degree. I also found it kinda thin on the mouth, I may have expected too much based on many that stated a "thick mouth" feel, but not for me with this.
    • Finish

Dry fruits and drying bitterness that lingers. I found the bitterness just too long with not much else to counter the off notes of this.

I detect very little on the nose with this apart from a little black currant?
This is really closed after a little time there is some ripe plum and jam notes but its one dimensional in some respects.
    • Taste
      82 82
There is a battle from the start between the sweet dark fruits and a drying bitterness.
The bitterness is really noticeable to me but I am sensitive to bitterness in whisky.
There is a mass of dark fruits and some mulled wine notes and the sweetness is trying to get out but is pegged back by something

The finish has a sweet tail but again the drying slight bitterness spoils everything

    Conclusion and pictures on: https://tomtrinkt.de
    • Nose
Very voluminous, heavy and multifaceted. The varied game of sweet fruit notes and "heavy" aromas fascinates me immediately. Within less than half an hour, I was able to recognize the following associations: sweet fruits, plums, dates, raisins, figs, juicy oranges, grapefruit (slightly acidic), burnt caramel crust of crème brûlée, milk chocolate, spicy oak, cinnamon, delicate herbal notes and Marzipan. The different flavors are very harmoniously interwoven and exude a high degree of maturity and elegance.
    • Taste
Beautifully oily and silky soft, the BenRiach wets the entire oral cavity. A pleasant sweetness runs along the tongue, while on the tip of the tongue a minimal Pfeffrigkeit sets in and causes a subtle tingle. The alcohol content (46%) is very well integrated and always gives the vulominous malt sufficient strength. Sweet fruits (cherries), overripe peaches, grapefruit (again slightly sour), dates, raisins, plenty of dark chocolate with dark hints, dark forest honey, caramel, some leather and spicy oak notes emerge. The spicy oak intensifies and causes a slight dryness on the palate. The complexity to be anticipated during nosing continues seamlessly in terms of taste. Very beautiful!
    • Finish
Long, voluminous and warming. The sweet fruits as well as the dates, figs and plums finally sparkle with a nice intensity, before the chocolaty and spicy notes gain more and more dominance. Nuts, various spices and wood flavors let the Malt finish prudently. On the palate remains a slight dryness and minimal bitterness.

I tasted at the Whisky Festival 2017. Great, one of the best whiskys I drank this year at the event.
    • Nose
Rich, warm smell. Sweet spicy, with lots of honey. Date, figs, but also sour fruits, overgrowed gooseberry, milk chocolate. (92 b)
    • Taste
The taste is very full, beautifully mature, soft, creamy. Chocolate, sweet spices, and later cloves. In the end, it's drying out. (90 b)

a really delicious malt that is so ripe and voluminous that its finish never looks superimposed. The ambitious price is partly above that of the Ben Riach 25 50% and I personally prefer this older one.
    • Nose
      89 89
a wonderful scent of sweet dates, oranges and apricots, fruity strong acidity forms a nice counterpart to the sweetness, oak gives the whole volume, mint and chocolate - everything perfectly balanced, very tasty, seductive - dreamlike
    • Taste
      89 89
It runs gently on the tongue, no alcohol to be felt, oak mildly aromatic, sweetness spreads - plums with cinnamon, apricot jam, again oak with tree juice and slightly cooling on the tongue, light coffee notes, apricots and again oak
    • Finish
      88 88
Slightly cooling mint lies on the tongue, oak is clearly noticeable - but not dry, salivation

Great expression by Benriach. This 22y old Moscatel is quite rich, sweet (fruity) and full in its charactere. You can argue about the price but the quality is quite high for this standard (more or less limited) expression.

    Concerning price/performance ratio: 7/10
    • Nose
Plums, raisins, marzipan, dark fruits, sherried marmalade, wine and dark fruits, vanilla.
    • Taste
Moscatel, red and dark fruits, grapes and chocolate, sherry spices, oak. Berries and jelly plums.
    • Finish
Long. Chocolate with plums and raisins, fermented grapes, nuts.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Producer's Tasting Notes:
Nose: A full, sumptuous nose consisting of dark orange marmalade, rich fig syrup and sweet dates. A dusting of cocoa and cinnamon followed by a gentle a hint of garden mint adds a luxurious character.Palate: Rich, velvety dark chocolate fondant topped with glazed maraschino cherries develops to plum cordial and spiced honey. The long finish is rounded with a gentle, earthy balance of nutmeg, stewed barley and old vintage leather.Finish: A rich body laden with dark Mediterranean fruits and a complementary balance of warm spices and delicate oak characters.

Peak Malt. Like an exotic vacation. Perfect age, more years of years would not do him any good. Both smell, taste and the finish just beautiful. I'm excited. Unfortunately budget-technically a nightmare, of which one should hoard bottles! 92 points
    • Nose
Butter biscuits (those with 52 teeth), fig jam, orchid greenhouse, bouillon, vanilla, some freshness in the end
    • Taste
creamy vanilla pudding, a hint of Asia, chocolate, pleasant bitterness on the finish. Spicy and fruity
    • Finish
long, dry and fine-bitter, a slight pungency (no alcohol) remains on the tongue, more so a very fine tingle.

My first BenRiach that I really like but probably due to the cask which gave this dram an absolutely beloved influence. I was a bit sceptic due to the sour and also oaky nose which was nice and complex but you never know what you finally will get. Great whisky which is worth its money (180€ 01/2017)
    • Nose
A sweet sour combo where the sour part is stronger but the sweetness comes through every now and then. More sour grapes than milk chocolate and more sour pear than sweet dates but all is there and gives a quite complex nose. I also have an oak, cocoa and orange influence.
    • Taste
The chocolate is now more present and the sour part steps a little back and the sweetness comes through! I have not talked about the alcohol which is always difficult for me to not have cask strength but it is just perfectly matching to this dram and I fear that either more or less is just harming this whisky.
    • Finish
nutty and long but also some sweet berries, cocoa and tobacco.

Color: strong golden mahogany. Nose: Full, nose-filling aromas of dark orange marmalade, viscous fig syrup and sweet dates. A touch of cocoa and cinnamon, followed by pleasant hints of garden mint. Palate: Strong, dark chocolate fondant, topped with Maraschino cherries, plums and honey. Elegant flavors of earthy nutmeg, steamed barley and old vintage leather. Finish: A strong body with dark Mediterranean fruits and a pleasantly balanced amount of spices and delicate oak tones.

I'll see to it getting a whole barrel to bathe in for a few minutes every other Saturday. At the time I was already looking forward to the 18-year-old, who unfortunately has not been there for a long time. This new 22yo. is about equally good, only it has more wood influence - without which it disturbs - and much more depth and a greater oiliness. However, the delicate smoke impression of the 18yo is missing.
Overall, this results in one of my few dream ratings over 90 points. A very subjective rating from me, sure not everyone will go along, but that is as it were made for me. 91 to 92, I'm not sure.

Wow, struggling to disassemble and analyze, he came to me well but not very well. The moment I just gave him his room and enjoyed it without much thought, he first developed his quality. An incredible mouthfeel that I have rarely experienced so far!
    • Nose
Sweet and heavy, fermented pear, slightly sour, milk chocolate, grated orange peel, like a dessert yoghurt cream, spicy notes, some oak, slightly woody, freshly made espresso, but the fruit notes are clearly dominant
    • Taste
oily yet supple, a fruity sweetness, again with oranges and yellow fruit, pear and peach, fruit acidity, vanilla, creamy, tingling, intense, comes slowly dryness from the oak, a great mouthfeel, the 46% fit here very good, then the oak will hit right
    • Finish
dry, dry, as if chewed fruit, grape skin, as a counterpart, although reduced, still the sweetness, slightly nutty, quite long and pleasant
