Anyone interested in understanding why Springbank is riding the crest of the current whisky wave should seek out this bottle.  It is as pure an expression of what the folks in Campbeltown are producing as any I have ever tasted.  It's all there in beautiful proportion, the slightly medicinal peat smoke, the fruit, the oiliness and the saltiness.  It's not the most expressive, nor the most complex Springbank you'll find, but its profile is a perfect reflection of what makes Springbank, Springbank.  Thanks to the folks at The Nectar for a great selection.

Nose : Whiffs of peaches at first, quickly overrun by lemons, smoke and mineral notes (pencil shavings, wet stone). Austere. Yes. Springbank it is.

Mouth : Dry, sharp. Lemons, apples, pepper, salt and mineral notes again.

Finish : Dry, earthy peat, a pinch of salt.

Austere it was and very good.

Takes time to unfold. Well... does it unfold? Classy austerity. Putty. Delicately smoked lemon juice. A dash of grey pepper. Not an easy seducer, but some kind of attraction though.

Taste

Just the same. Very clean spirit. Dry and sharp mouthfeel. Unripe yellow plum. Granny Smith with a pinch of salt. Aromatic, but in a very dry way.

Finish

Straight and dry.

Comments

Not one to pick up from your shelves if you're in a mood for some sexy stuff.

Wow ! Ultra old-school and ultra-pure. Idiosyncratic austere and naked Springbank. Putty big time, but also very very medicinal, antiseptics, band aid, pepper, tar ... quite Laphroaigian. Sulfury lemons, apricots and un-sweet berries, green leaves. Very subtle and complex, almost shy. Extremely "linear" profile if that rings a bell, working on a few austere notes and exploiting them with sharp precision. But don't see linear as monodimensional because it's very complex actually.

Taste

Quite shy again, not a bomb, but beautiful. Varnished plums, earl grey tea, white flowers, band-aid and plasticine again but the whole is superbly perfumed and fruity, and still very naked. Think like a good sake. Beautiful notes of raw fish as well. Complex once again, very very perfumed but in a good sense.

Finish

Not overly long but very good, on an austere and medicinal fruitiness, as expected. Slight salty tang.

Comments

Exemplary by today standards, if a bit too shy at times.
