Very nice and tasty ... Relatively thin and ideal as an "unimportant" companion for sociable hours ...

    21/22/21/22 (86P)
    • Nose
Creamy caramel shimmers in the Premium Snifter, while the glass wall is glued to the glass wall, while dark fruit notes rise up with a hint of smoke. Sweet caramel, a hint of toffee, hints of raisins, the "original" Finlaggan invites you to take a first sip ...
    • Taste
The first sip flows thinly over the tongue, some wood, a little smoke, here and there hints of fruit, crumbs of milk chocolate and caramel. The aftermath is already announcing itself quickly and thinly ...
    • Finish
Slightly tart, minimally smoky and earthy, a voluminous fruit mix sticks to the palate for a minute before the nutty aftertaste ends with a hint of chocolate.

    Salt vs Vanilla
Finlaggan is an undisclosed Islay single malt and depending on the stocks that The Vintage Malt Whisky Company can put its hands on, the contents may vary. It’s a public secret that they bottled Lagavulin, Laphroaig and Caol Ila in the past. I don’t care much, as long as it’s good. But curb your enthusiasm, as this is a 20 EUR bottle.
Wet earth, smoked fish, sweet barely, peat and Wellington Boots: that’s the nose of this malt in a nutshell. Not a lot of smoke though. Stable scent, mud and lemon juice: a good mix. In the background, I also get some white fruit, mostly apples, and a green touch as if from ferns. Young, but not unpleasant.
The mouthfeel is fine, but the low strength makes it lack some punch. It’s a bit smoky now while the saltiness goes head to head with the sweetness. Salt versus vanilla in my book.
The finish, unfortunately, is rather short.
I’d say this is a very young Laphroaig, but I cannot be certain of course. Anyway, this is bang for your buck. Thanks, Pat!

    • Nose
Smoke and peat, some salty, ash, rubber. Also some fruity through it, apples. Not very intense.
    • Taste
Salmiak kick at the beginning, then liquorice and lakrisal. Pepper, peat, smoke, ash and tobacco. Caramel too. And later also some orange.
    • Finish
Light peppers still, salmiak, lakrisal, liquorice. Not very long, later in the end it gets a bit longer, more caramel comes through.

On the nose: salt, peat, salt. It's simple, straightforward, straight to the point. Well, that's not all, there is also ash, iodine, smoke, damp earth, limestone, guano. Wet grass after the rain. It's slightly medicinal. In the mouth, the coarse salt binds to soft caramel, anise, some spices. The finish is quite peppery, still salty, still spicy. The shade of salted caramel remains evanescent in the mouth, but for a short time.
The lack of complexity is compensated by the power of the coarse salt. It was necessary to dare such simplicity. I go for Caol Ila.

This smoky single malt at cask strength comes from a single distillery. Which one, exactly, is a well-kept secret.
    • Nose
      Smoky, strong and phenolic.
    • Taste
Pleasant, spicy and sweet with maritime notes and smoke.
    • Finish
      Medium-long finish.

Trying this quite cheap whisky first fouled me, with it's nice strong smokey smell and taste. It's an easy going whisky tasting smooth and a bit sweet, but also thin and bit aqueous. In the troth very smooth but also sort of powerless. Afterdrink taste of stale wood I really didn't like
