Salt vs Vanilla
Finlaggan is an undisclosed Islay single malt and depending on the stocks that The Vintage Malt Whisky Company can put its hands on, the contents may vary. It’s a public secret that they bottled Lagavulin, Laphroaig and Caol Ila in the past. I don’t care much, as long as it’s good. But curb your enthusiasm, as this is a 20 EUR bottle.
Wet earth, smoked fish, sweet barely, peat and Wellington Boots: that’s the nose of this malt in a nutshell. Not a lot of smoke though. Stable scent, mud and lemon juice: a good mix. In the background, I also get some white fruit, mostly apples, and a green touch as if from ferns. Young, but not unpleasant.
The mouthfeel is fine, but the low strength makes it lack some punch. It’s a bit smoky now while the saltiness goes head to head with the sweetness. Salt versus vanilla in my book.
The finish, unfortunately, is rather short.
I’d say this is a very young Laphroaig, but I cannot be certain of course. Anyway, this is bang for your buck. Thanks, Pat!
