Raisins, cloves, cinnamon, cardamom, cranberries, candied fruit - with ventilation we are in the wardrobe with leather jackets - dry medium-long finish

  2. Totoro scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

I have to disagree with Serge on this one. Way too little cask character for 21 years; the sherry does nose nicely but is way too overt and masks anything that might lie beneath. The finish, too, is nothing to write home about, especially not for a malt of this age.

I'd wager we're dealing with lesser-quality casks here, finished in first-fill sherry to put lipstick on a pig, as it were. Note that the bottle carries no information on the precise mode of maturation, only that this has "a big sherry influence" (no argument from me here). Also somewhat hot, which, again, is a bit weird for the stated age.

I've grown very disenchanted with the whole "regional malts" series (some of the NAS versions were so immature as to border on the frivolous). This isn't bad per se, it just does not deliver what I'd expect from a sherry-matured 21-year-old. Not worth the asking price.

    Timorous Beastie 21yo WID 88718 https://www.whiskybase.com/.../timorous-beastie-21-year-old-dl #WagnerAlexTastingNotes
21yo: Nose: strong sherry influence with nuts, nutmeg and fruits, fresh, lively, sweet, vanilla, some leather, slightly herbaceous, blood oranges & strawberries, Hefezopf, raisins, which are given in many notes, I could not even guess - usually I have The very good in the nose, but here was not even the way to my raisin pack and a good train of it an impact on my senses Taste: tasty, low in alcohol, sweet and fruity but also spicy, very good balance between the aromas, milk chocolate, orange zest Finish / aftertaste: some leather, "old", very fruity, long, spicy, slightly astringent, slightly sweet Comment: I like it very much and joins a long list of good ex-Sherry Malts (yes, this one is a blended one); However, he can not stand out for me Points: Good 90/100

Compared to the 16, this is an intensity grenade - compared to single malt from the price range, it clearly weakens

pleasing, round, tasty - somewhat one-dimensional

    • Nose
dark honey, pine needles, chocolate, cinnamon, grass, cherry, orange, lemon zest, strawberries, blackberries, baked apple with cinnamon, fresh apple, pear
    • Taste
      Oh that is very interesting.
Very soft and sweet in the mouth with honey, melon, strawberry, lime, then some grapefruit, wood and coffee
As soon as you swallow it comes a lot of pepper and chili. Once the sharpness has subsided, a slight sweetness remains. He has a really long finish

Great whisky! Rich and complex nose, wonderfully fruity and floral. Also very rich palate with beautiful sherry influence. Excellent blended malt, very balanced, complex and very "summer" by its nature. Still can be found for a bit over 100 euros and the price looks very reasonable for this quality
    • Nose
Very soft and smooth, floral (acacia and cherry blossom), honey, sweet oranges, overripe yellow apples, toffee, white chocolate, butter, vanilla and green tea after adding water
    • Taste
Sweet, oily, vanilla, caramel, milk chocolate, ripe pear, brown sugar
    • Finish
Medium-long, mouthwatering, sweet, a bit spicy, fudge notes

Great blended malt that just makes Dalmore rise in my esteem.
    • Nose
The label promises the best of three worlds (Glengoyne, Dalmore, Glen Garioch). In the nose, the sherry is immediately there and he is very pleasant. Soft, creamy, balanced between sweetness and spice. Raisins, plums and trail mix with a variety of nuts. Honey sweetness mixes with aromatic herbal notes.
    • Taste
extremely round, full of body. Cinnamon seasoning makes your mouth dry, but is immediately offset by rosy and malty sweetness (Glengoyne speaks up). Fresh freshness (orange zest), which one would not expect here, is the Dalmore price and the boiled apple makes Glen Garioch recognize. Perfect drinking strength.
    • Finish
The finish is long, soft and with such a fine spiciness and bitterness, reminiscent of green tea.

    Nose:
Sweet sherry influence, it is not a sherry bomb, but clearly sherry. There are red fruits and dried raisins in here. There is also something in as I would describe as hay farm stable.

    Taste:
Sweet. There is again quite some sherry notes here. Also it is quite hardy (umami?). Which is from Oloroso casks if I'am right. There is a little wood in here.

    Body:
    Full and smooth

    Finish:
Medium-long. Yet again the hardy sherry. A tad dry, but that's fine with a 21yo. It becomes a bit bitter in the and and the wood is coming through more and more.

    Price:
I got mine for around 100,- euro's which is fine, but not a steal.

    Presentation:
I like these bottles with the mouse, but the rest of the series is cool too.

    Comments:
I have the 40yo too, which was excellent. It made me expect more from this one. It is certainly good whisky, but nothing compared with it's 40yo brother.

Nice balance and dynamics in flavours. Not overly complex but enough to make it interesting. The sherry is clearly recognisable but the spicy notes rule over the sweetness which is different to a lot of the sweet sherry bombes now-a-days!
    • Nose
A nice spicy (baking spices) attack with some dried fruit (figs) in the background. There is also a hint a cookie dough in there and some orange peels.
    • Taste
Sweet attack (caramel, some toffee and honey) with a creamy mouth coating texture. The firmness of the nose doesn’t follow through in the taste which is a lot softer. After the sweetness you get some spicy notes (pepper, cloves).
    • Finish
Medium long finish which ends a bit dry. The spicy notes remain in the finish together with some citrus notes (orange peel again).

  16. Longmorn66 scored this whisky 85 points Expert Junior

Very well described as a classic sherry of very good quality. The final is less dream (for a lover of raw sherries barrel), short and watery because of the dilution and too soft, lack of spices, pepper, wood, punch. Q / p a little high considering this reduction rather bad come but otherwise good dram.

  19. Bosi scored this whisky 86 points Specialist

A great evolution of the standard Timorous Beastie. Interestingly, this Blend family - Standard NAS, 21years Sherry Edition, and 40 years - has its own character, which is not covered by sherry cask. These creations show all the expertise of Douglas Liang & Co.
    • Nose
A classic sherry nose: raisins, nuts and sherry. In addition, there are still unusual notes of sourdough and furniture polish.
    • Taste
The taste is also more typical: dark chocolate, rum grapes and brown sugar. The second sip of cinnamon and honeydew melon are added.
    • Finish
The finish is slightly dry, here too, the influence of the barrel is clearly noticeable. It's long with sherry sweet, British marmalade and pepper.

  20. KayMeertens scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

    • Nose
Apple, vanilla, raisin and caramel. Water releases malt and a little spice.
    • Taste
Apple, yellow raisin, caramel, raspberry and malt.
    • Finish
Caramel, apple, cocoa, raisin, vanilla and strawberry.

  21. Donwaldorf scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

This is really the kind of Whiskey off Islay I normally like but in this case the lack of punch is clearly disturbing. He could have been outright crazy in barrel.
    • Nose
Initially we are on a very fruity nose, cooked fruit, compote or jam. Gradually the woody takes over with vanilla cream, honey and some spices. After a few minutes of aeration the nose becomes vinous and woody on roasted red fruits and spices.
    • Taste
Attack more than light, very / too watery, it clearly lacks power. Would not Dalmore reduce it? What a surprise ! Good beyond this lack of pep's we are always on fruits, apple and peach mainly, as well as light spices.
    • Finish
Medium and always as sweet as in the mouth. There is vanilla, crème brûlée and the bitterness of coffee.

Enthusiasm Nose: 3/5 Mouth and finish: 2/5 Not a bad dram, but I was expecting a lot (I loved the 40 years) Whiskey n ° 1254
    • Nose
Slow to open, it gradually gives cooked fruits and berries. Not very deep.
    • Taste
Sweet, quite melted, but not very stout. Toffee. Lack of explosiveness.
    • Finish
Like the mouth, a rather watery structure.

  23. Gaija scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

Well, I must say it's a very fine dram, and the price point is quite ok !
    • Nose
Quite discrete and well-manered, I like it. Raisins rolls, panettone, Maraschino cherries quite clearly, Cointreau ... quite liquorous, definitely, but not in a bad way. Discrete and subtle, but round and rewarding.
    • Taste
Goes crescendo after a very soft arrival, up to the point of hitting clearly above its weight. Pastry notes are dominant, and it's very liquorous again, with cherries and Cointreau again. Very malty.
    • Finish
Quite dry, but clean, and slightly buttery - very enjoyable, it could have been cloying.

For a whisky marketed as a 21 YO sherry edition it is quite lacking in sherry flavours for me. It’s all too subtle and restrained for my taste. It needs quite some time to open up and a wee drop of water might help you here. For me the flavour profile and character of this expression is better than the much hyped 40YO edition. But for this kind of money I can get much better whisky and there is plenty to choose from.
All in all not an outstanding whisky and IMHO not worth the money.
    • Nose
A subtle, restrained and fruity whisky with aromas of acacia honey, buttercups, hint of sulphur, a very subtle smokey tone, unripe pears, golden raisins, tangerine, white chocolate, grapes, grape seeds, green apple, ginger, hint of tea, hay, sackcloth, suede leather, cedarwood and a hint of oak.
    • Taste
A spicy and sweet whisky with aromas of pepper, chili, icing sugar, honey, vanilla, red apples, grapes, brambles, grape seeds, Mirabelle plum, grapefruit, unripe pears, green tea, cedarwood, subtle tannins, subtle cinnamon, allspice, ginger, subtle oak, metallic tones and licquorice root.
    • Finish
A medium to long and slightly drying finish with aromas of honey, icing sugar, apple, metallic tones, apple vinegar, subtle tannins, grape seeds and subtle oak.

  27. Tauti did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

Wonderfully sweet-warming on the nose with aromas of Oloroso sherry, barley, honey and spices with softly macerated summer fruits, as spicy on the palate as the "Original Timorous Beastie", but here we also discover intense notes of ground barley malt, honey & raisins in Combined with crushed Demerara sugar, the finish is gently warming with peppery spices at the beginning, followed by cocoa, vanilla & a touch of mashed meringue (meringue) An excellent release that is unequivocally a "Timorous Beastie" - but in a new and explosive way, due to the long storage and the great use of sherry casks.

This limited edition of Timorous Beastie is a big, bold and intense
blended malt with a great mouthfeel. Full of rich sherry flavours, dried
fruits and sweetness, perfectly balanced with oak and Christmas spices.
Certainly one for the upcoming Xmas season. Best to enjoy neat in front
    of a log fire.

I thank Douglas Laing for the sample!

    • Nose
The nose starts off with delicate cinnamon spice, covered by sherry
flavours and dark dried fruits. Barley sugar, sweet honey and custard
with a hint of leather in the background.
    • Taste
Bold and rich on the palate with a massive load of sherry, layers of
dried fruits, raisins and subtle sweet acacia honey. This is
complemented by a nicely warming spiciness of cinnamon, Xmas spice, oak
and a hint of pepper. Underneath there's a lovely sweetness of barley
sugar, vanilla and lingering nutty flavours. Deliciously mouthfilling!
    • Finish
The finish is long, pleasantly warming and fruity with raisins, followed
by a delicate nuttiness and prickling oak. Becomes drier towards the
end with spiced oak and slightly bitter dark chocolate.

      WITH WATER:
Clean and fresh on the nose with a few drops of water. Less fruity,
spicy and sherried flavours with more oak coming through. Less warming
and significantly tamed on the palate with only mild spices, prickling
oak and a subtle sweetness of dried fruits. The finish is a bit shorter
and creamy but becomes very dry with oak, bitter notes of walnuts and
dark chocolate, followed by a hint of cinnamon on the tail.
