  1. Calmar scored this whisky 91 points Connoisseur

An excellent molt, aroma is gorgeous, multifaceted and deep, the taste opens us this whisky from a different angle and it also does not disappoint, the finish here is rather intended to give a transitional pause, gently take you to the next sip.
    • Nose
Open, dry, old furniture from solid wood, cigar box, soft smoke and peat shroud, sweet wine notes, grapes, white wine, old leather goods, wax, polish, raisins, sweet creamy notes, cappuccino, light shades of furniture lacquer, vanilla, spiky coal-ash motifs, very deep and complex.
    • Taste
Rich, dense, there is more peat and coal, oak, charred branches, metallic acidity, white wine again, something like chardonnay; sweet and sour berry notes, dark chocolate, mountain ash.
    • Finish
Soft, oak-peat, light berry-wine acidity, unsweetened grapes, light metal and sulfur-mineral shades, burnt caramel.

Definitely my drink. Multifaceted, complex, with excellent balance and many cyclic flavors on the palate and finish. Burnt sugar, bacon, charred wood, oxidized copper, ash, leather, black berries, wine notes, pastries, custard, and again in a circle. In addition, this whisky has an obvious sulphurous component, and I am a big fan of it. Confident 90 points.

Interesting Longrow that could also be from a red wine cask instead of sherry.
    • Nose
      86 86
Maritime smoke, redcurrants, a hint of rubber, a bit earthy, smoked ham.
    • Taste
      83 83
A bit sooty, smoked ham, sweet fruits, redcurrants, blood oranges, salty smoke, a hint of rubber.
    • Finish
      82 82
A bit sour, winey, salt, a bit of wood tar, sweet smoke.

  8. Dre73 scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

The nose starts off very rich and versatile, with red fruits and smoke, and eucalyptus entering. Taste is a little less versatile, but steady and good. Very nice dram for sure.
    • Nose
      89 89
Full scent, where woodsmoke and red fruits take a battle which one dominates... changing overhand but no winner. Ashy, prunes, berries, pretty some eucalyptus now. Do we have a new dominator now? Quite some alcohol now as well. Later on some grassy notes.
    • Taste
      88 88
Pretty powerful, pepper, blueberries. Woodsmoke, creamy, prunes. Getting more intense in time, caramel and chocolate now.
    • Finish
      88 88
Smooth now, again berries and smoke, more ash now. Later on some chocolate, pretty long finish where smoke remains lingering.

Oh Springbank... One of the most lovingly crafted spirits in Scotland... with the worst (or one of) track record of using sulphered casks. But clearly, look at the scores and more importantly the reviews...no one seems to mind! I do not trust any modern Springbank that uses a sherry cask, unless I can try it first.

The sulphur isn’t too outrageous here, dissipating with time; although still present. Notes of Hickory smoked bacon, cranberries and blackberries on the nose. Ash, berries and honey on the palate. The finish lingers on red and black berries, ash and cold smoke, bacon jam - sulphur throughout.

Nice, but a little out of balance
    • Nose
      85 85
Iodine, brine, loads of fresh fruits - very intense. Some smokiness appears in the back, coming in stronger as time in the glass goes by.
    • Taste
      78 78
Does not quite stand up to the nose. Smoke and oakiness dominant, sherry dominance not as evident as I would expect after nosing
    • Finish
      82 82
Spices and oak bitterness in a pretty long, decent finish

Peat & brine mixed in with sherry and some blueberry then some black currant finishing with burning wood smoke and smoked bacon.
salty more than peaty but the balance is good and it is complemented by some burnt brown sugar sweetness.
Some candied orange appears amongst the spice with a cake note.
Finish is pretty reasonable and nicely sweet.

Lovely tasting longrow, better than I was expecting.

N- Welcoming muddy and sea spray in absolute Springbank DNA. Broad with chewy soft dried fruit, whiff of cigar, nail polish remover and sweet caramelized herbs. A nose warmer in elegant manner. Quite recently made but carrying the nice old malt floor nuance. Succulent yet beefy, slicing thru a thick steak like a butter. Black raisin, hint gun powder and sulphur lingers. (95/23)

P- Monk fruit, herb bitter sweet with molasses, velvet and full. Excellent sherry butt influence that wasn't overpowering to let the complex flavours comes thru without being too oak-y and tacky. (92/23)

F- Long, waxy, vintage leather, elegant and refine, well rounded, intimate whisperer. (92/23)

Absolutely fantastic. I agree the finish seems to imply this was in the cask maybe a tad too long, but still, this a cracking dram.
    • Nose
      92 92
Oh yes, dirt, metal, crushed shells at low tide, cookie dough and fudge, partly due to some sulfur, and of course the ripe red fruit, caramel, dark sugar and raisins, due to the sherry cask. All covered in this wonderful barn peat we all love.
    • Taste
      91 91
Strong, oily, fatty, ripe red fruit, fudge, caramel, dark sugar and peat with a whiff of smoke.
    • Finish
      89 89
Quite long, medium bitter and quite drying. Peaty ripe red fruit and caramel roll off the tongue to the throat, some minty dark sugar flows in slowly and dies on the tongue. In the end the metallic peat fills the mouth gently and reveals more smoke

    • Nose
Caramel, blueberry, nutmeg, grape and gooseberry.
    • Taste
Blueberry, caramel, salami, peat and mango.
    • Finish
      Cranberry, caramel, nutmeg and mango.

  22. Gloin scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

The smell is very beguiling, the aromas are tightly interwoven, an exciting interplay, the smoke complements perfectly with the fruit.

The tension continues in the mouth, the aromas harmonize, but are also in interesting conflict.

The departure is unfortunately a bit one-sided.

A few years more in the barrel might have made it even more pleasing, but then the oak would have become too dominant. In any case, it is a very nice whisky. The somewhat unsatisfactory finish prevents a top rating.
    • Nose
Noticeable, but not smelling smoke, apricot, almond, a little vanilla, behind it sour orange juice, a hint of liquorice, wood, some currant, raspberry behind
    • Taste
Very soft body, warm start, pleasant sharpness, sweet smoke, dessert wine, sweet sherry, a little espresso, kräutrige bitterness, pronounced oak, again and again supplemented by the smoke
    • Finish
Smoke and oak dominate, pronounced tart bitterness, the sweet notes are almost completely gone, and the fruit also has difficulty showing behind smoke and bitter oak

  23. Goethe scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

Very nice balance between the sherry and the Springbank/Longrow character. Almost as good as the single cask Longrow 13-year-old (WB-ID: 103080) I had some weeks ago.Concerning price/performance ratio: 9/10
    • Nose
Smoke and a sweet vinous cow dung (some burned matches), sirupy sweet sherry, overripe blood oranges, red fruits (raisins, plums), hints of bacon, some minerals, some ashes, some overripe grapes.
    • Taste
Sweet sirupy smoke. Fruits, overripe blood oranges, red fruits (raisins, plums), hints of bacon, minerals, leather, dark chocolate, nice texture.
    • Finish
Long. Liquorice, bacon, sweet sirupy smoke (umami if you want so) and oak.

Too dirty and sulphurous. Not my taste.
    • Nose
Dirty, sulphurous smoke, dark dark chocolate, burnt raisins, cloves, coffee
    • Taste
Dark chocolate, coffee, played by the smoke, oily, again some sulfur, oak spice, getting a little dry
    • Finish
Again dominated by the sulfurous smoke, a dry mouthfeel, without being very dry, again raisins and chocolate

  26. Owidram scored this whisky 91 points Expert Senior

Nose is full of dark fruit

Flesh and blood in that meaty mouth with high volume and thickness.

Some sulfur, but not that much.

A bit on sugar side on the mouth, but a fresh cut lifts it which makes it sharper in the end.

    Long finish with cocoa notes.

I'm lacking a bit of evolution aromas as tobacco and leather to give a better note. Yet I'm sure I would have noted this 93 or 94 at 18 or 19 yo.

    Excellent.

This was a really really strange whisky. But it was also really good. A very interesting funky and almost creamy character, something quite unexpected and really pleasant surprise as it’s not the funk one usually expects off a Longrow and the cask influence is quite unique as well. As always a fantastic bottling from a fantastic disitllery. Thoroughly enjoyed this one.Reviewed in my blog:https://iwriteaboutstuffilike.com/2017/06/16/longrow-2001-springbank-society/

Absolute quality bottling, I can't say anything else. It's very focused, rather bold, savoury and warming.
    • Nose
Very compact if I may say so: mineral, earthy, sooty and on dried fruit. Peat, seems to be a mix from sphagnum and heathery peat, wet stones at the beach, putty, damp earth, dunnage warehouse, figs, dates, a worn leather jacket and certainly almonds.
    • Taste
The mouthfeel is pleasant: not too sweet, even a tad dry, with sourish oloroso like notes. A little lighter, with more fresh fruit such as orange and lemon zest, but further just as focused as on the nose. The nuttiness seems to grow bolder, and there's a layer of salt that gives it a nice maritime character.
    • Finish
Long, leaving you with a pleasant dry taste. Peat and tobacco fight for dominance, leaving the meaty notes of leather boots on the third place, just before almonds, dried fruit and pepper.

    From the Society:

For practical reasons relating to the bottling schedule, we had to bottle the Longrow 14yo shortly before it officially became 15yo. I mention this incase anyone has concerns about the label but please let me assure you that the label on the front of the Longrow 14yo is correct, although at first it may look as if we can’t count ;)

  33. bert61nl scored this whisky 91 points Expert Senior

NOSE: Rich walnut, pecan, notes of stewed fruits with woodiness and scent of worn leather
TASTE: Stewed fruits remain, rhubarb, dunnage warehouse flavour and woody
FINISH: Meaty and chewy, dry with menthol as the smokiness builds up.
