Whisky Reviews for Inchmurrin 1984 ED

6 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 87.84 points

  1. greg_0277 scored this whisky 89 points Expert Junior

It's good, it's what I like in general but it lacks a bit of pep or a dimension that would highlight the fruity side (a little smoke, hay etc. ..) as we can find in very good irish. I expected maybe too much
    • Nose
Not very expressive. Fruit from the orchard, cut flowers but everything is very light, even after a long aeration.
    • Taste
In the continuity of the nose, apricots, peach but more expressive, however it is quite monolithic and remains quite light.
    • Finish
The finish is average, with the vegetal side of the nose emerging.

At 200$ initially, this is uncommon quality/age/price ratio, shall I add. Hats off.

Nose is less abundant than the 32yo's and lacks those complex old-style teas, but palate is better, and is simply better than many a palate I've had this year. So that's a draw score-wise. They are very similar though, all in all. Finish could be a little more fruity, but that's nit-picking. I don't know if the fact that these Inchmurrin's stunning quality was left unnoticed should worry me or make me feel lucky. But seriously, watch this space.
    • Nose
Delicate and yet unmistakable. Fresh orange juice, apricots big time, and again that "posh pastries" side full of fresh eggs. My little brother says this is "next level Bailey's" and indeed there's a definite creaminess to it, on white chocolate. Over-sweet mandarines, bananas, transient strawberries even. Very caky and dignified like some egg&butter-full La Durée madeleines you'd buy for 3$ a piece. With time, a nice grassy side emerges, a prairie full of daisies. No idea what's the smell of a daisy but this simply has to be similar. Lemongrass, and at last some tea with time (which was much more obvious in the 32yo https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/93461/inchmurrin-1984-ed). And again, there's this "salty snack" kind of maltiness that's typically Inchmurrin in my experience. Very good nose, although it could be more complex and evolutive.
    • Taste
Holy sh** really. What's with Inchmurrin these days ? One of the best and most-integrated arrival I had in months, alcool-wise it's magnificiently soft, then a terrific fruity crescendo begins with more apricot juice than you could imagine, pink peach stone, grapefruit, papaya, but the fruitiness is balanced by citrus teas, woodspices (nutmeg and laurel) and at last a prairie covered in peppermint-flavored toothpaste, which is actually amazing despite not sounding so. Incredible.
    • Finish
Again, like the 32yo, switches to a fresh, bitter and lime-y leafiness, on nettle, eldberries, even carrots and various roots, same salty maltiness again (unsalted peanuts), sesame. Later on, peppermint, yep, that toothpaste again, but it's perfect in this context.

I am a fan of Littlemill, blind I would have bet on one of the first half of the eighties. Same finesse, same fruity, same floral freshness, same gluttony. Even yum, what! And pile hair in the profile that I love.
    • Nose
Very fruity and very fresh, light and greedy. Apple sauce, pear syrup, apricot and banana. A dash of pink grapefruit. Orange honey. After aeration, scents of bouquet of small wildflowers are revealed more and more.
    • Taste
Just as fruity as the nose. Sweet grapefruit, ripe banana, apricot, and juicy pear. All in syrup and compote; a sweet, fruity, and greedy mouth. From the spicy flower stalk behind this gluttony.
    • Finish
Short. The vegetal / spicy floral is placed in front, then a slight bitterness dry and menthol is installed.
