Whisky Reviews for Ardbeg 1974 Ses

[October, 2015]  ...this is one of the last drams of my second (and unfortunately last) bottle of this fabulous Ardbeg - so I take the time to write a review before it is gone.  I bought this bottle for 203 Euro (398 Deutschmark) in December, 2000.

The 1973/74 vintages of Ardbeg are the most heavily peated you can find among the old style Ardbegs.  And this is a good example.  You smell it with the first sniff:  This is a monster, even with its low abv of 40%.  It smells like a freshly tarred road that leads to an old style byre.  The sweat of the cows drops in the barley that is left on the floor and both is soaked up from the wooden structure - all nicely balanced.

On the palate there is an immense sweetness, beautiful sugars combine with iodine peaty notes and a slight (but by no mean unpleasant) bitterness from the oak.  A great dram, that improves with every second in the mouth.  The finish is long and a little bit drying, but still very nice.  It repeats all aromas from the mouthfeel with a special focus on these very delicious sugars again.  And not to forget the peat - it is present all the time.

All in all one of the best Ardbegs to sip - maybe not the most spectacular (the 1973/4 Kingsbury bottlings top this easily) but one to enjoy at any time on any day...

wonderfully complex - always take enough time to enjoy the full pleasure
    • Nose
durchgegorene herbal mash, wet hay bales, smoked fish - after a longer life he is maritime and dirty, burnt rubber, lubricating oil, but also baked apple and woodruff
    • Taste
Leather, smoke, black tea, oil, green plum, ashes from the fire, tea, herbs, chamomile, and much more
    • Finish
Cough syrup and green reindeer cloves stick with the round smoky dryness for a long time - despite only 40% Alk.Vol.

The nose is the best part, Sestante usually did a 40% to go with a cask strength, at 40% this is underpowered but a much better profile than today's sweat socks and cheese style Ardbeg

[2015]  I had this dram during a private tasting of whisky connoisseurs at Limburg.

In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 92,5.  I took no detailed notes (pls. see my detailed review below) as there were simply too many drams...  Every connoisseur brought several bottles from his collection to the tasting where they were lined up by common decision.  Just 1 cl was served as otherwise we probably would not have seen the end of the tasting without medical problems.

As this was a flabbergasting event I list all the line-up and my resp. scores below:

  6. Baanaanaabob scored this whisky 91 points Connoisseur

great creamy old style ardbeg, would have been brilliant at a higher abv

  8. ColdAesthetics scored this whisky 91 points Connoisseur

Much better than the 18-year-old cousin of Sestante, who was tried in comparison, has gotten more power from the barrel, but overall is still halfway cautious, with 5-8% more, he would have also 93P probably.
    • Nose
Very interesting and different than expected, fresh, green apple, pear, capers and a hint of lime juice, orange oil, subtle smoke, more smoke like peat, fennel, brown sugar, later pineapple, kiwi, coconut, sour rye dough
    • Taste
Orange oil, red apple, blood orange, black pepper, spine, dark malt, green apple, Earl Gray tea, green tea, wild honey, resin, capers, pineapple, kiwi, mango, old leather, incense sticks
    • Finish
Now also dark malt, the resin, orange zest, all sorts of tea, leather, medium to long

  10. lincolnimp scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

Not bad but not great either around 87-88 points
    • Nose
Sherry and peat are strong in equal measure, salted caramel, fudge, prune juice
    • Taste
Peat is strong and its creamy with a little walnut.

quite drying with hints of orange, dark wholegrain crackers, and a slight hint of menthol.
    • Finish
approaching medium with the peat remaining to the end.
