Yamazakura Blended Whisky (40%). Consumed March 2021. Very pale yellow. Aroma is cheap, grainy, potato peel takes a back seat to lemon and light banana esters. Slightly muddled mousy background. Taste is thin, watery, mousy, burnt sawdust, light lemon and dental rinse notes, very high drinkability but low complexity and enjoyment value. I mean it's okay. Very much a beginner's whisky. Unapologetically so. Tastes a lot better than it smells with an unreal level of drinkability - perhaps beyond that of any whisky I've ever had. It's not a good whisky though. 2.9/70

Tasted at Story Tellers: Tasting Whisky in January 2018
Bit strange, yeasty, metallic and spirity, perhaps still rather young. flowers and umami, not really my thing.

I was told that the Sasanokawa Shuzo distillery is 50% Japanese-owned, 50% French-owned and has been distilling since the 1940’s.

    N: Youthful yeasty spirity pong.
    T: Well tempered, clean drinker.
    F: Little.
C: Ideal Highball juice. Maybe worth looking out for the 16yo which was released [into the UK market] in 2016

This Yamazakura, Yama meaning mountain and Sakura ephemeral beauty, is a production of Sasanokawa Shuzo distillery. It is located in Koriyama, in the prefecture of now infamous Fukushima, about 65 kilometers from the nuclear site. It was directly impacted by the tsunami of March 11, 2011. This house has been around since 1765 and has been producing Sake and Shochu ever since. It was not until 1946 that the whiskey began to flow, in the case of it consisting of a blend of four whiskeys both malt and grain. It is a whiskey that savored pure, but that will find its place in one or the other cocktail. I was very pleasantly surprised by the nose of this whiskey, in the image of what evokes Japan, that is to say that takes time to understand all the subtleties. www.passionduwhisky.com
    • Nose
Nose: Very supple and generous. A lot of honey, lemongrass. The blend is young, with barley sugar. But this whiskey is more complex than it seems at first, there is in the background a creamy material, made of caramel, dried fruit, biscuity notes, buttered, vanilla. Discreet presence of pepper.
    • Taste
Mouth: Even if sweetness dominates, there is and it is not destabilizing small attacks of alcohol, which are certainly due to his youth. But it passes and gives way to a fruity, tangy, barley sugar. We find more tranquility, with the same sensation of minerality that jostle just a few spicy spices.
    • Finish
Final: Dry and very bitter. Very vegetal, also with a lot of spices, pepper, fresh peppers. Tea notes, that's not invented. Of a very honorable length, maintaining a certain liveliness.

Well ... what can you say big, I think the notes speak for themselves. ;)
    • Nose
Metallic / copper, salted peanuts, ethanol, a few precocious flowers, wet hay, lime zest
    • Taste
Apricot in alcohol, cereal notes, sweet hay and malt, vanilla and some oak with nutmeg, but all this watered down and far away, lime zest again
    • Finish
      Short, cereal, fuel, cotton candy

    Yamazakura Blended Whisky
    (40%, OB 2016)

Nose: starts with some metallic / coppery notes, then followed by a growing floral side. Hints of salty nuts. Grainy notes and quite a lot of wet paper. Perhaps a hint of dry schochu as well. For some time I expected it to fold open, but it just stays flat. Very boring. Mouth: raw and rough, very spirity. Lots of grainy, spirity notes. A hint of sweet vanilla and then some peppery wood, but in a rather plankish way. Quite nasty really. Not nearly as funky as Fujikai, just cheap and bland. Finish: spirity. Luckily not too long.

Fujikai was a rip-off in my opinion, this is in the same ballpark. As a bottler you don’t get too many chances, I’m afraid. Around € 50-60. To be avoided.
