Whisky Reviews for Laphroaig 10-year-old

  1. Archer scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

Long ago, the 10yo was my first Islay malt. At that time, when the tongue was not barreled, it was quite a blast and an eye opener. In the meantime he seems pretty weak-tempered with his 40% - but if you take a break from the whisky for a while, let go of the cask strength for a while - and then get back in with him, he shows you what he's got.

A few days had no whisky in the glass, and already the nose is as before: seaweed, salt, tar, a strong smell from the hospital corridor, Hansaplast. In addition, but also something sweet, something sweet, like sugared lemons. Green apple over time, with the fresh paved road still steaming.
    • Taste
      87 87
Cold and ashy smoke with lemon, milk chocolate and vanilla. Peat smoke is pushing. Violent impact of seaweed, algae and dried fish. Harbor water. As hard as he is in his flavors, he plays with his 40% soft and tender tongue. Rare combination.

Medium long and slightly dry. Still smoky, ashen. Cold campfire, smoked lemons and apple slices.

  2. SAND scored this whisky 84 points Expert Junior

    (Lot 6097 = bottled 6 April 2016)

(From an almost empty bottle which has been standing with a lot of air in it for almost a year, given time to oxidise and develop)

Nose: Sweet tar and smoke, burnt wood, light ashes/soot, moderate salinity, sweet barley, stewed yellow fruits, camphor (86p).

Taste: Woody and dry arrival, then sweet on the mid palate before a quite peppery finish. Saline notes, tar, seaweed. (82p). Does not take water well; the taste quickly dilutes and becomes a little bitter after just a little water.

    Total score: 84 points.
