Whisky reviews for Laphroaig 2001 HL

A great medicinal Laphie, heavily medicinal but not heavily smoky. The refill sherry cask exactly as it should be: it complements, but does not define.

If the PX Laphroaig was like this...
    • Nose
Mint, citrus, medicinal, bandages, sea breeze, clams, pepper, slightly nutty
    • Taste
Iodine, roasted cashew nuts, seawater, sheep's wool
    • Finish
Long, salty, medicinal (more iodine, less smoke)

This Laphroaig was interesting— soft and mild— it pulled in several different directions. I wonder if any of the flavor notes would have been sharper and clearer at cask strength instead of the standard Old Malt Cask 50%. Perhaps not. The fruit on this was quite lovely, but if I am in the mood for Laphroaig, I do not usually want something as quiet as this. It was missing the punchiness that often defines the distillery. No real herbal or maritime notes were pushing forward out of the background, especially on the finish, which felt a bit short.

    Mental Image: Old Dole Cannery
    • Nose
Maple, wood fire, and fruit. Drowning in thick gooey cooked-down maple syrup, pecan wood smoke, and meaty brown sugar maple bacon. Herbal impressions of charred fennel root, tarragon, and curry leaf parted to reveal caramelized grilled pineapple and vats of pineapple cooking at the old Dole Cannery.
    • Taste
Medium-bodied with a mellow flavor profile of grilled fruit, asphalt, and salt. Juicy caramelized grilled fruits hit right away with watermelon, pineapple, and mountain apples. Hints of maritime salt led into an herbal spice and tarry notes of a hot asphalt parking lot. Subtle sherry funk lingered at the end with citrus and grape Nerds.
    • Finish
Medium length with notes of salt and subtle grape candies.

This Laphroaig is surprisingly low in phenolics - the smoke is reminiscent of campfire smoke and cold ash. The sherry cask complements the otherwise typical Laphroaig character with dry fruit notes. Pretty good, but I don't think it's worth current prices - an Ardbeg Uigeadail costs a good third and is just as good.

On the nose, peat in a row, with an earthy side and citrus!
On the palate, it's spiced forth with this greasy peat, not dried, the earth again, then the intense fruity aromas on lemon and some tangerine, a little Christmas spice too.
In the final, it's nice because it stays in the mouth, and in the glass!
    A very nice dram.
    • Nose
peat and citrus rather cooked, fairly spicy spices and wood that gives it a singular appearance.
