  1. Whiskylifestyle scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

A fantastic Springbank! There is a lot to explore in this one. When I had a second dram I picked up completely new flavours. Quite surprising. The nose and finish are slightly better than the taste, taste is a little bit more flatter, but not much though.
    • Nose
Smoke and minerals at first. When this settles down, the fruity notes appear. Dried fruit like raisins, a sweet orange and pear, even some green grapes. Also a bit medicinal with a pinch of anise.
    • Taste
There is some sweetness from cane sugar, the minerals are back and it is a bit fruity. Ripe pears. Also dried fruit. Then some dark chocolate appears. A bit spicy too, cinnamon and white pepper in the background.
    • Finish
This is a long finish, nice! Smoke and pepper and slightly dry.

    • Nose
      90 90
A lighter sherry profile: lots of peach, dried apricot, some dried plum and dates, green tea leaves, faint walnuts, a little musty. Also barley sugar, sugar bread and buried under the sherry notes there's the typical minerality and chalkiness of the 1996 Archive bottlings (cask 550 and 551).
    • Taste
      90 90
Creamy and fruity, some nuttiness, peach, mango, apricot, distant plum, honey, slightly mineral with a whiff of black pepper and peaty earthiness.
    • Finish
      89 89
Medium length: a little musty, some honied liquorice, mildly toasted wood.

    Serge Valentin on whiskyfun 27-12-2016:

Springbank 1999/2016 (50.3%, Archives, sherry hogshead, cask #269, 287 bottles) Four stars and a half Our Dutch friends at Archives’ already had some wonderful Springbank in the past, so… Colour: pale gold. Nose: I was about to copy-and-paste my notes for the Cad when I started to notice more sherry, leather, and perhaps ‘medicinal rubber’ in this one. So it’s perhaps a little less bright, and a little more, well, dry-sherried. All very nice anyway. With water: mushrooms and struck matches. Which works. Mouth (neat): same feeling of leathery, slightly rubbery things in the arrival, before more bitter oranges and pepper appear. A little thicker, for sure. With water: it just adores water. Oranges, chalk, pepper, truffles, waxes… The rubber’s gone now. Finish: long, on some kind of smoky and mineral marmalade. Comments: I like them even better when they’re unsherried, but once again, it’s a great one. SGP:452 - 89 points.

I had a little fear at the opening but aeration does him the greatest good. Water on the other hand did not change much. Good but deserve to tell more.
    • Nose
Peat. Mineral. Lemon, mandarin, peach, caramel, gingerbread.
At first unattractive, becomes much more pleasant after 20 minutes of waiting. The peat very present at the beginning becomes less aggressive.
    • Taste
Sweet and tart fruit candy Lemon, orange, red fruits. Very discrete peat in the background
    • Finish
Finale on the peat again more present and the red fruit paste. Mineral, of medium length.

    • Nose
Mango, caramel, peach yoghurt and bread. With water some pineapple.
    • Taste
Mango, caramel, peat, peach, lime and chili pepper.
    • Finish
Peat, chocolate, mango, cherry and toffee.

  9. Dirk scored this whisky 89 points Super Administrator

Excellent, above expectations... The nose and finish are the best. But a very nice Springbank. I can't go above my current score because of the small sample. Will taste this again when I get the full bottle. Leaning towards the 90 points at this moment but for now 89.
    • Nose
Mineral, sweet pears, grapes, smoke. Chalk and a whiff of oil, nice nose. Some sweet oranges. Promising and above expectations.
    • Taste
Sweet pears, grapes, peaches and the mineral are clearly there. Medicinal but not as strong as I normally get. With water is becomes fruitier (tropical fruit) but the mineral and medicinal aspects stay.
    • Finish
Sweet, drying finish quite peppery but nice. It's a mid long finish.
