Cadenhead Burnside (teaspooned Balvenie) 27 year 46.5%

N: bubblegum, wintergreen, orange zest, copper, wet driftwood, polish
T: orange pancakes, icing sugar, viscous, milk chocolate, varnish
F: cloves, oranges, oak, Christmas spices, dark chocolate, slight bitterness

    89/100

A very good, old tasting malt. Very quaffable. I see no problem ploughing though a bottle of this. The bubblegum note reminds me of some of the old 43 year speysides of late. Unquestionably the cheapest way to drink an old Balvenie these days. Lacks a little complexity and carries a little bitterness in the end to keep it from the 90+.

Curiously enough, a slightly smoky Burnside. That's a first.

Wait, does this have smoke? Certainly feels like it. Apart from the light peat note (intensity-wise, this resembles lightly peated Glen Scotia or one of these "peated cask" bottlings), I find the creamy, maize-like sweetness typical of ex-bourbon maturation, a fragrant / flowery aspect (summer meadow), and a mellow oak backbone. Very good, though a bit unexpected due to the unusual smoke component.

Yup, the peat is unmistakable on the palate. So either some peated barley has found its way into the mash or - perhaps more likely - one of the two bourbon barrels has previously held lightly peated spirit. The peat combines with the wood to create a spicy/savory impression that I didn't expect from a Burnside. Sadly, this comes at the expense of the usual fruitiness and elegant minerality. Gets more woody (and softly bitter) the longer you let it rest in the mouth.

Very nice finale, with the mellow tropical fruit flavors you often get from old Balvenies, but also a dusty, well-aged impression resulting from the combination of wood and smoke.
