Whisky Reviews for Mannochmore 1990

  1. dRambo scored this whisky 92 points Connoisseur

a wonderful - impressively exotic fruity malt and not yet a sherry monster - but still delivers full load of oak - the nose is a dream -were it not so expensive I would have a few boxes of it - the complexity will require me for a while
    • Nose
From the glass rises intense creamy buttery vanilla-sweetening sweetness - it feels as thick as you could cut it, in addition to a growing fresh herbal somewhat grassy oak note, delicate fresh fragrant peaches, unripe walnut shells, melons, apricot, pineapple, mango, oranges and orange oil - the oak develops a cooling minty note, slight bitterness, some tobacco
    • Taste
sweet and intense tropical fruity, noticeable strength and warmth but no burning, vanilla-steetel with hints of cloves and nutmeg, strong multi-layered oak tones, dark chocolate with mint, tobacco tingles on the palate - with slightly bitter toasted notes, this powerful vanilla sparkles again and again on, the sweetness-acid balance is a little more towards sour fruity - for me that fits wonderfully with the strong oak notes and vanilla
    • Finish
Mint and orange oil stick to the palate and tongue - warming and cooling, the oak note prickles on the cheeks and some dryness spreads in the mouth

    • Nose
An intense conglomeration of different fruits and spicy oak notes rises from my glass. Over the first 20 minutes, I find distinct aromas of orange, mango / passion fruit, forest honey, green apples, caramel, herbs and a noticeable spiciness of the different oak barrels. From the high alcohol content in the amount of 53.4% (cask strength) is nothing to feel. Simply wonderful, how the sweet fruit notes harmonize with the spicy wood notes.
    • Taste
Very powerful start with a light tingling on the tongue, but without appearing alcoholic. Very saliva-stimulating and oily from the mouthfeel. The mouth is flooded with a very complex cargo of flavors. Above all, bright exotic fruits, delicate floral notes, oranges, vanilla, toffee, light roasted aromas, coffee, marzipan and a pronounced spiciness of oak barrels make themselves felt. Is there a slight hint of smoke in the background? A slight bitterness already sets in.
    • Finish
Long and warm. Subtle smoky notes combine pleasantly with sweet, exotic fruits, orange peel and a strong oak spice, which creates a pleasant bitterness and a slightly drier mouthfeel.

A thoroughly great malt matured in First-Fill Ex-Bourbon American Oak barrels, new American Oak barrels and new European Oak Ex-Bodega barrels (butts) - one of my current favorite whiskys.
Edit: Due to the enormously favorable exchange rate increased from 91 to 92 points
    • Nose
freshly cooked warm applesauce, pear, mango, passion fruit, pineapple, vanilla, menthol, orange, even stronger tangerine! Apples, green and red, all incredibly intense, with oak spice, vanilla, ginger and some leather - wow!
    • Taste
Pineapple! Coconut! Oily, creamy, waxy, great spicy, with vanilla, ginger, white pepper (not too much), again and again the intense oily-waxy pushes forward, very great mouthfeel. The aromas are mainly fruity, exotic, the pineapple, tangerine and coconut accompany the dram to the very end, milk coffee - orange, tangerine, always light spiciness of ginger + pepper, mint, licorice, wood extract, cantuccini, marzipan - insanely aromatic everything and a lot to taste ...
    • Finish
Everything lingers on, pineapple, tangerine, coconut, cantuccini, mint and eucalyptus ...

Nose: Even the first nose is really special. Basically a very sweet but pleasantly elegant nose. Alcohol is in no case felt. Caramel, vanilla, shortbread alternate with woody, exotic and vinous fruit. The wood note is reminiscent of hot sawdust and charred wood. The pleasant fruit acid component fits perfectly into the variety of aromas and is also reminiscent of orange peel. Very complex! In the further analysis comes to me the association of old sherrygetränktem wood and reminiscent of acidic, but pleasantly harsh teen as well as bitter almond flavor, walnut and tobacco. The sweetness of the drop never falls into the background. If I have to give an example of a harmoniously elegant balanced nose, it would in any case be this drop.
Taste: Sweet, pleasantly tingling mouthfeel. Tropical fruits alternate with intense vanilla. The sweet fruit note lasts surprisingly long and changes only after some time to something sour fruity or spicy notes such as tobacco and some leather.
Elegant tenderly bitter woody notes with beautiful residual fruit occupy the tongue, reminiscent of heavily roasted nuts, orange peel and fruit tea with a splash of mint. The finish is eternally long but not intrusive dry but rather wonderfully spicy. Again and again echoes of vanilla, fruit and bitter notes shine through. A true palate and especially Nasflüichler, who has convinced me.

Quite tasty. However, I don't know if the whole virgin oak thing turned out very well. I presume some casks were re-racked into virgin oak because they weren't up to par and needed a boost.
    • Nose
Lots of oak and varnish to start, which may not sound as a positive, but I find it rather appealing. There's orange zest, a hint of lime, marshmallows too.
    • Taste
The sherry influence is a tad more noticeable here, with sweet brown sugar and cherry syrup. But again, the oak is extremely dominant. Orange liqueur and wood shavings. There's some cloves and ginger too. Nevertheless, this is actually well-balanced.
    • Finish
An encore of what I've already described above. Medium in length.

    Tasting Notes by Diageo

Barrel: A unique blend of First-Fill Ex-Bourbon American Oak barrels, new American Oak barrels and new European-style ex-Bodega barrels (butts).

Aroma: Gentle, slow, deep and ethereal. Essentially fruity, with candied orange peel, waxy red apple peel, sweet muscat grape, ripe red and tart green apples. All of these notes rise from a dense, sugary layer of burnt fruit cake. Warm and strong, increasingly slightly spicy and earthy with a hint of gorse. Fresh with some water, directly and with a creamy touch. Now you smell fruit salad on crushed ginger nuts, lemon jars and fresh cherries; later menthol-like coolness.

Taste: The body is mild to moderate. Soft texture, enveloping; initially hot and sweet in the taste, with hints of burnt orange peel, vanilla toffee and latte. More fragrant and floral with hints of orange oil and lokum, appealing bitter nuances of burnt pastries and an ascending oaky dryness. In reduced thickness, soft texture and sweet aroma, followed by bitter black coffee; herbaceous and oily, with cooling licorice.

Finish: Medium length, firm, bittersweet and pungent, with a hint of smoky heat; in the aftertaste you will find gorse (coconut) or mixed dried fruit and eucalyptus. Oily and tarry; cleansing with water, warming and bitter; with orange oil and orange peel; in the aftertaste macaroons and milk chocolate.

A potent nose, a vibrant palate that is also a little dirty (like some OB Brora), thick on the palate with plenty of depth to it.
No need for water, some nice spice notes on show here.

Man oh man! The #Diageo limited releases are getting up there in price, but there's some stellar drams to be had in them. The key is to #TryBeforeYouBuy if possible. Not usually an option in Ontario, so I'll exploit it as best I can.
    • Nose
      88 88
The nose is lively Sherry spice cake and malt, old library books and dry leather. The nose goes on so long. Autumn leaves and boiled sweet, dried tea leaves and almost a hint of Madeira.
    • Taste
      89 89
The palate, sweet spice and incredible depth. The old armchair and dusty library tomes come back, sweet bakery goods and almost a touch of cherry cordial.
    • Finish
      92 92
The finish is a showcase of depth. Sit down for this one as it's long, autumnal fairs and polished oak cabinets, more dried leather goods and hints of farmy stables. Cherry cordial carries in and is met with more sweets but much richer.

    Great mature whisky without mistakes.
    • Nose
First of all, nut cake! Gorgeous sweet baked flavors. Mature woody notes add subtle bitterness. Complex bittersweet first impression. Only very late show the fruit flavors with some orange peel and sweet apple. Mature, intense and extremely pleasant on the nose.
    • Taste
Strong start. A lot of spicy oak. Slightly peppery. Mouth-filling and salivary-stimulating. Lots of dark chocolate, but only a very fine elegant bitterness. The orange shows up again.
    • Finish
      Long and warm. Toasty aromas.
