  1. Thermidor scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

A nice and not at all pedestrian blend, but it suffers a bit from the amount of grain whisky in it.

Tasted with 5 other Cadenhead blends.
    • Nose
Juicy, fruity, olorosoish, and waxy, with some worn old floorboards. Juicy sultanas, faint saltiness, and some leather. The smell of a retirement home where someone just baked a cake. A bit of perfume, and dark bread.
    • Taste
Waxy, old, rich, fruity sherry, with some kind of berry jelly. Some ethanol comes through every now and then.
    • Finish
Waxiness and red fruit. Doesn't stay for very long, and there is some grain whisky burn I can feel.

Nose: Can basically be identified with a lot of sherry barrels older than 1980, red fruit, fat powder, animal fat, chocolate and coffee-dominated French desserts, and leather and dirt. Overall silky and balanced, but probably because I got the bottle for too long, the aroma is so expressive that I need to stuff it into the glass more than nose. As a result, my smelling process is not very smooth.

Drink: Due to the above reasons, the taste is lower, it has become water, the aroma is more of a combination of dried fruit and spices, and the ending "should" will be very long.

Overall: This batch should consist of quite a few old oak barrels, reminding me of 1972 Caper, and those 1990 Secret Farclas that just got high marks.

Sherry mustiness on the nose at first, this fades as it sits a while and opens up.

Excellent whisky, waxy fruity deep and rich really satisfying

  11. dramspotter scored this whisky 79 points Connoisseur

fine enough but it does not have enough attack which diminishes it; it is very drinkable you could sit and drink loads of this and enjoy it without finding it that truly remarkable
    • Nose
spicy fruit, hot cross buns with marmalade
    • Taste
even when it first enters the mouth it is rich but tannic(woody?) in character, a lovely sherry sweetness though develops
    • Finish
short->medium; a pleasant finish that is a continuation of the palate but ebbing away, a little too quickly

    Enthusiasm: Nose: 3/5 Mouth and finish: 4/5 Whiskey n ° 1748
    • Nose
Barley sugar, discreet vanilla cream, velvety. Floral notes, but also toasted. A little leather.
    • Taste
In the mouth, both deep and fluid. Leather. A small note of mint. Subtle Sherry, rather spicy (as often on blended)
    • Finish
Finale on vanilla, supple, delicate, elegant, never watery. Cream and sweet spices. Easy.

    A brilliant drop!
    • Nose
      Ingenious ripe sherry flavors;
    • Taste
Balanced, homogeneous and just wonderfully fruity!
    • Finish
      Long, warm and rich - fruity;

  15. ScotchGuyTO scored this whisky 92 points Connoisseur

This is a monster. Balance in spades, Sherry rides hand in hand with malt, keynotes of mint and subtle peat. This was really something.
    • Nose
The nose is astonishing bid body whisky. Old Sherry meets new Sherry, loads of malt, mint, cherry, fruits, old wood, deep mahogany, floor polish, herbs.
    • Taste
The body is long and drawn out, deep malt and intense rich sherry. Big load of malt and mint, bay leaf, old malt, rich wood, Autumn leaves... Man this is something.
    • Finish
Finish is... Well frankly it's stupid. It's so long, mint and Sherry malt, huge creaminess with more and more spices. Slow to develop, but there some peat coming along.

I might not be buying it at today's price of ~200€, but even then it's still a more-than-okay quality*age/price ratio when you think of it. Would buy at original price of 150€, I don't know many other occasions to have a real "old-school" waxy-fruity feeling at that price.

Excellent, goes down like nothing while still refusing to be too easy : it has character (hey, it's cadenhead after all), impact, and some bitter sides. I never noticed the grain element by the way. That said, its perfect chorence makes for a somewhat unsurprising experience, which will prevent me from going 90+. But does the job, oh yes it does !
    • Nose
Cohesive and title-worthy, it's indeed fruity. Physalis, oranges, redcurrants : nice bitter-acid balance, not oversweet yet very approachable of course. A nice "patine" displays its age at some point, that kind of waxy-candied side of the fruitiness that comes with age. Aperol big time, a vegetal side and some slight "powdery" oak (an oaky sponge-finger somehow), wallnut shells, rhubarb. Melted and quite beautiful.
    • Taste
Very nice impact for that proof, perfectly in line with the nose : oranges, cherry tomatoes and physalis, cranberries, very little wood per se (wohoo !). Now Schweppes Tonic and pink grapefruit have taken center stage : it's deliciously bitter and citrusy. Pèche Mel'Bush (belgian beer specialty with peach flavour), candle wax, barley (it's still quite malty actually) and woody incense. All good.
    • Finish
Fruity, perfumy and bitter wax indeed, still in line. Pomgrenate, various bitter citrus skins, and some metallic sides. Quite long, and again, not woody actually ; just a little bitter astringency from the grapefruit, which I sure won't complain about.

    • Nose
Honey, peach, quite a nice nose.
    • Taste
Oak bitterness, too old. Quince jelly. They've tried to compensate for the oak bitterness by adding in grain whisky. Makes it too soft in the mouth.

The Rich Fruity Sherry offers a lot for (small) money, considering it was made from at least 36-year-old barrels. The sweet and bitter Camparinote remains in memory. Delicious.
    • Nose
Fine aromas; Raisins, vanilla, caramel, plums, red apples, bananas, oranges, leather, milk chocolate, dark honey, light smoke, sweet tobacco, hint of floor wax
    • Taste
sweet, velvety, slightly oily, tangerines, English marmalade, quince marmalade, light caramel, hazelnut, espresso, dark honey, vanilla, cinnamon, ginger, leather, more and more pepper, fruity-bitter, ginseng, a touch of Campari. Overall, a bit watery and extremely good drinkable.
    • Finish
Sweet-peppery and a touch bitter, quickly drying, nutty, caramel, espresso, light smoke + leather, the sweet-bitter Campari touch remains in the mouth for a long time

A very successful blend from Cadenhead who was not wrong in his denomination. This is the kind of bottle that is easy to drink and can end very / very quickly at a party. The price is reasonable considering the age and quality.
    • Nose
The name of this blend sums up pretty well what the nose releases: fruit and Sherry. First there are fresh fruits like peach, pear and then the nose darkens slightly. There are cooked fruits, banana flambé, prunes, grapes, vanilla and caramel.
    • Taste
Alcohol perfectly integrated, the attack is sweet and pleasant. There is still a lot of fruit with these few floral notes that try to make their way. Gradually the apricot pie sets in clearly. We are on the fruits of the orchard accompanied by light spices.
    • Finish
Average in length, we are less on the fruit and more on the creamy vanilla, the caramel and the slightly spicy woody.

At the original release price of 150€ I might have considered to buy a bottle. At current prices higher than 150€, I definitely would not. It's a satisfying blend for sherry lovers but it tastes younger than it is and not worth 200€ or more.

    Enthusiasm 4/5 Whiskey n ° 1186
    • Nose
Delicate sherry, ripe plums, juicy. At the same time light and deep, subtly woody. One feels the advanced age. On the other hand, the overall volume of flavors is not so high, and the "grain" part of the blend takes over as the airing progresses.
    • Taste
Light and deep there too, cooked apple, creamy texture. Few spices on the other hand.
    • Finish
Velvet finish, with coconut and vanilla, a little less after the first sip.

  29. dramspotter scored this whisky 79 points Connoisseur

Nose: brandy snap, pencil woodiness, mandarinPalate: pleasant but lacking in drive due to alcohol

    Finish: short->medium

Overall: this is quite disappointing when revealed what it was, I would expect something more as a result of the marrying. It was pleasant enough but not distinguished

The perfect Christmas dram - Fantastic!
    • Nose
Vivid, dried fruits, apricots, blood oranges, nutty, hints of leather and vanilla, touch of smoke and oak wood - very good
    • Taste
Sweet, oily, smooth, nice oak wood, strawberries, apricots, peaches, later on more on oranges, again hints of smoke and leather, tobacco, spices, even hints of cinnamon and gingerbread - really good
    • Finish
      Medium long and warm

If I did not know, I would never have suspected a blend. A great composition.
    • Nose
Very ripe, milk chocolate and vanilla, then fruits, grapes behind, develops towards raisins
    • Taste
creamy, quite dry, the fruitiness is somewhat in the background
    • Finish
long with leather and a subtle hint of smoke

  33. LordBellamy scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

Nose: a great deal of forest honey, slightly nutty, oranges, oak, pagan notes, the grain barely comes into play, maybe some glue, but it does not bother at all. Overall, very round and harmonious, in between flashing red fruits such as strawberry and cherry on, plus peach kernels and vanilla

Taste: not so oily as one might expect after 36 years, the orange is literally jumping against it, plus some tobacco and old leather armchairs, also dried figs show up

Finish: medium to long, again lighter than you might expect. Here comes the oak to bear more, but without being overpowering, almonds, cherry / Amaretto, also I have something rhababer, strange, but that fits in this context really well

Water: a few drops make something sweeter, in the finish it is softer, but I think the grain in the finish rauszuschmecken better

Conclusion: A really great blend. Why should one overpriced, buy old Malts, if there are such creations for a reasonable price. Very well done. Only drawback, if you have to find one thing: he looks a little younger, I would have given him maybe 25 - 29 years. I also suspect that not all ingredients in matured sherry casks, but that Bourbon Wood has played a role - 90 points

I read the reviews before I tried and I thought it was gonna explode in my mouth.
It didn't...yet it's surprisingly, and dangerously drinkable. Maybe too drinkable.
Not what I expected but no doubt a good whisky.

Oh, now there’s a surprise! Well, what isn’t a surprise is getting a very good bang-for-your-money blend, we’re used to getting pampered like that by Cadenhead’s, but it was a nice, surprising experience for me. At first it was a “very good” blend on the nose – a bit closed down and complex, as any good blend should be. But then there was the palate, improving upon the nose, providing a refreshingly unmodern (well, the youngest whisky is 36 years old, after all…) whisky. No overpowering vanilla, no sickly sweet sherry smothering the palate, just a very good balance of a sherried dram with spices, oranges, dried fruits and well-balanced oak. Very good indeed!

    90/100

A note in the box says "the whisky in this blend was all distilled in 1980 and this bottling comes from a vatting of two sherry butts of the blended whisky." It isn't clear whether any or all of the whiskies were matured full term in sherry casks, or just married in sherry butts. According to a post on Cadenhead's Facebook group it's a blend of Tamdhu, HP, Invergordon and Macallan.

Cadenhead's tasting notes:Nose: Strawberries, rich fruits, gooseberries, full fat cream, raisins, honey and cherries
Taste: Vanilla, hint of toffee, raspberries, strawberry jam, soft spice and marzipan
Finish: Soft spice continues with vanilla, cream and hazelnuts
