Whisky Reviews for Clynelish 1997 DL

  1. ErrHaBe did not rate this whisky Expert Junior

An overall good Clynelish from the bourbon barrel, which you can see positively about the 18 years in the barrel. A nice "sniff whisky" with a long finish that unfortunately falls off in the mouth. All in all quite well done and not boring despite the rather one-dimensional taste.
    • Nose
Nuts come right at the beginning, and it smells very sweet, everything is quite dark and rather heavy in appearance. The intense, sweet flavor is reminiscent of fir honey. After a long time, the typical Clynelish waxiness. Reminds me of an old Barbour jacket, but more sedate than the 14-year-old OA. With the fir honey there is also dried orange peel, plus the flowers, plus a spoonful of vanilla pudding, all nicely layered.
    • Taste
Unfortunately, the whisky in the mouth cannot deliver what the nose promises. There is of course a nice honey sweetness paired with pleasant barrel flavor. With the second sip, there are also a few ripe blackberries and maybe dark cherries, paired again with the orange and an even more subtle waxiness. But it lacks the intensity and complexity, yet the liquid is incredibly tasty.
    • Finish
This dark, waxy sweetness stays in the mouth for a long time, flattering the palate and stimulating the flow of saliva. I think it's all very, very tasty. In addition, there is a nice barrel spice that nicely balances the sweetness. Even after minutes you still have the honey in your mouth.

I like the nose the best - it does not convince me tasteful, for the price certainly not, 123 € are for 18 years and 2nd row distillery anyway quite ambitious - but with this barrel, I think it is simply inappropriate expensive.
    • Nose
spicy, pleasantly yummy Floral with a herbal odor to bitter scent - similar to dandelion, sweet, dark fruit that smells rather sour, lots of vanilla, Clynelish typical wax rather a bit in the background - the nose is a bit restrained - warmed up the floral notes sweeter - fallen me better
    • Taste
Strong, slightly mineral, waxy, fresh, minty, sweet, slightly tart fruity, sherry - slightly red fruit - but rather unspecific
    • Finish
warming, strong oak, spicy, ginger, menthol, some espresso, very dry, quite a long finish

He does not hurt anyone. A pleasant whisky for easy enjoyment.
    • Nose
Like a fresh bouquet of flowers, very floral, vanilla, some curry, honey, in the background some cocoa with a splash, slightly iodine spice
    • Taste
very liquid, first sweet, slightly chocolaty, then again the flowers, fresh herbs, honey, vanilla, quite mild, light without corners and edges, pleasant
    • Finish
on the finish clearly canned mandarin comes, slightly herbaceous, on the palate bittersweet, mildly fading
