[March, 2008] Together with friends I emptied a bottle that I bought for 42 Euro in October, 2005.

    In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored this 90. My notes state a clean and flawless "naked" Lagavulin.

    • Nose
      87 87
Dry peat, vanilla, honey and barley. Good balance
    • Taste
      86 86
Spices, white peeper, less peat than in the nose, some "amaretto". Round and warm.
    • Finish
      85 85
Spices, stay longer in the mouth with a dry wood finish.

    Ah but what a whisky.
In comparison, the 16 year old (OB) is very watered down. This 12 year old CS is uncompromising, wild and enormous.

    • Nose
      97 97
Smoke, lapsang souchong, cold tobacco (latakia, English mixture). Surprisingly not greasy, rather dry.
    • Taste
      95 95
      Salty, hot, huge.
    • Finish
      95 95
Huge. The sensations of the mouth last a long time.

Just perfect: brutal and complex at the same time.
    • Nose
      98 98
Visit a bog on a misty morning. Rhododendrons and rose hips.
    • Taste
      95 95
Lamb's lettuce, a certain softness of texture but ... (see "Finish")
    • Finish
      95 95
... a very long peat smoke that troubles you.

Nose: distinctly fruity and just the commensurate amount of smokiness. Well-balanced.

On the palate more powerful: fruity and even floral but iodine and tar are dominating the impression. Well integrated alcohol despite 57.8 abv. It's just a warm feeling in your mouth. Firm and oily body.

Warm and lingering finish. A bit too alcoholic. With water more balanced. The peaty flavours are less impetuous. Smooth finish.

Bought it for EUR 60.00 in 2003. So great value for money.

Lagavulin 12Y Cask Strength - 57.8% Released at the end of 2002 - beginning of 2003. Released with a limited number of bottles each time. The last is the 4th or 5th release. In 1991, Lagavulin increased to full production after using only one third of the production capacity for a number of years. Thus, through 12Y Cask strength, a new product has been established when you have access to a large inventory again. Had hardly been good at bottling a 12-year-old with normal strength. Color: Gold-colored. Scent: Smoky, somewhat one-dimensional. Taste: Long with salt and smoke. Score: 83 http://smad.se/provningar/Provning%2046%20Lagavulin.html

  7. Rustamich did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

Excellent. Lagavulin isn't as peaty as it used to be? Pull the other one.
    • Nose
Pungent, complex. Smoked eel, coal tar, applewood, smoked cheese, bitumen. Frisky.
    • Taste
Intensely peaty. Rounded with big kick: marine character, fragrant smoke, touch of black pepper, but balanced by sufficient sweetness.
    • Finish
      Smoke belch.

A wonderful Islay malt. A drop of water unfolds some more flavors, like oranges and raspberries. Additionally it make it more soft.
    • Nose
Seaweed and salt, wet wood and smoke.Everything very well balanced and adulating, not too strong for the cask strength.
    • Taste
Strong, an explosion of salt and pepper, with a fine bite. Nuances of wood, hazelnuts, strawberries and dark chocolate.
    • Finish
Warm and long lasting, enables to follow the liquid gold until it reaches the stomach.
