This was an experience, so very different and well comprised than anything I have had before. If this is only 2 malts blended then they were chosen wonderfully. This exceeded my expectations.
    • Nose
Ahh, deep. Wine/sherry sweet tangy nose with well integrated oak. Citrus, honey, very floral and fragrant. Candle wax, tobacco and light peat. Very inviting and reminiscent of TINALW.
    • Taste
Thick, oily and very mouth coating. Slightly sweet wine esq but with a olive vegetal note. Citrus, drying, salty. Apples and fennel
    • Finish
Long. Tart, acidic, ashy, a peppery note that lingers wonderfully. Apple and limes.

Stunningly, immaculately clean. Like, I want to make a bodywash out of this. The freshness of the flavours is eye-opening and sinus-clearing. It’s a technically flawless, perfectly-executed blend. The Clynelish and Talisker are both there, but combined together into something more.
FWIW, the older Clynelish component is 24 years old, and the Talisker component is 20 years old.
    • Nose
It’s Clynelish – Fragrant, floral, and strongly waxy. Green fruit, but not in a “young” sense, just fresh – green banana, coconut water, unripe pineapple, peach, and a little green apple in the background. All kinds of fragrant notes – woody nutmeg and sandalwood, sweet basil and mint, floral white tea. Blasting sea spray and a hint of black pepper foreshadow upcoming Taliskertude. I’ve never been to Hawai’i, but this is what I imagine an unspoiled Hawai’ian rainforest smells like.
    • Taste
Medium-thick texture. Arrives with massive candlewax and sweet lemon, giving way to more fruit - green apples, pineapple, pear and grilled banana. Very structured development, with a transition from wax and fruit to firmer spicy notes of black pepper and old oak. There’s a hint of coastal peat now, seaweed and smoked kippers. The brine intensifies.
    • Finish
Medium-long, cleaning right back up as the smoke diminishes and the paraffin wax returns. Very soft vanilla. Black pepper and charred driftwood. More basil and mint. Sea buckthorn and honeydew.

Yup, a pretty old and stately nose for what is nominally a three-year-old. Old oak and all kinds of furniture polishes and waxes in the lead, alongside a soft glue note that reminds me of OBF or very old grain whisky. A whiff of peat and pepper in the background. Baked apple with cinnamon, but also rock salt, glacial flour, limestone - very mineral and maritime in character.
    • Taste
      90 90
Either this has been astoundingly mild to begin with or my sample has been quietly evaporating alcohol for the roughly 3-4 years it has been left in storage. At any rate, the waxiness is out of control here, like chewing a beeswax crayon. Sweet and mild and juicy, with naturally cloudy apple juice (or cider), cinnamon pastry, sugared grapefruit, and some astonishingly old-seeming oak, as if it's going on 30 rather than 20-something. Wood wizardry!
    • Finish
      89 89
Honey and lime juice, soft smoke. Leaves an oily, salty film on the lips.

Those are some pretty blenders! Nutmeg, pepper, astringent taste, it's just super!

    nose:
fresh fruity, grassy mint, caramel, vanilla, creamy, iodine and peppery spices, it is also very sweet fruit syrup, even a little crystallized honey.
    mouth:
    delicacy of scents on cooked fruits (peach, apple in the foreground), the sweetness continues, a little fleeting spices and a very salty return that appears and stays;
it is especially very soft on the palate with the acidulous and sweet fruits (the famous Harlequin that we let melt under the tongue), the honeyed sweetness which avoids having the tongue cut while sucking !!, the sweetness of the wax characteristic of a distillery, a little cooked almonds at the end.
    final:
sweetness and presence of markers, iodine gives way more and more to the smoke here, and the mouth, fruit and wax scents are present.
note the Clynelish-Talisker association which makes it a very good blended malt, can be too sweet and may require another dram.

Light and aromatic, sweet, somewhat cognac-like, sherry, pleasant and balanced.
    • Taste
      87 87
At the start, slightly spicy and a touch of spicy, a little sweet with a little sherry and wood notes, now the barrel note here too. Cognac-like, tart-sweet-tart, a little sherry, a hint of dark chocolate ...
    • Finish
      87 87
Long with oak notes, tart to slightly bitter, ending with a slightly sweetish finish.

The whiskey fully meets my high expectations. It takes some time for him to bring his development potential to full advantage.
    • Nose
First, slightly grassy notes and unripe hazelnuts. Then a light-fruited sweetness spreads, this turns into blossom honey. The nuts are more mature and are embedded in chocolate. The fruits become darker and sometimes exotic. The whiskey makes a creamy soft and deep impression already in the nose.
    • Taste
The creaminess appears immediately in the mouth. The grassy notes quickly make the honey sweetness place. The alcohol brings a pleasant sharpness. It is followed by waxy aromas and a nice strong spice. Now, vanilla appears too. At the back there is some salt caramel ...
    • Finish
A creamy and spicy sweetness is retained long in the mouth.

Very interesting molt, a rich nose and a cool finish, well balanced.
    • Nose
Good from the start, exotic fruits, freshly cut grass and dusty attic, some cinnamon. Very fresh, bright and balanced. A little later, notes of vanilla, honey and delicate, salty smoke show through.
    • Taste
First it burns with spices, then it covers with fresh olive oil.
    • Finish
the aftertaste is full of spices, a little bitterness, a bit of vanilla, citrus notes, lemon, olive oil, a fairly long aftertaste

What to say if it is that the mixture Clynelish 91% and Talisker 9% is perfectly successful. We find all the markers specific to these distilleries without hiding the whole. Only downside, can be a lack of power and surprise.
    • Nose
Nice notes of fruit cooked with this little hint of exoticism that makes this nose very sweet. We also find honey, vanilla and this particular wax. Behind a light smoke walks delicately. This smoke is saline with fennel and vegetal notes.
    • Taste
Attack very light, the alcohol is well integrated but it lacks pep's all the same. There are notes of candy (sour), citrus and spices. The wax mixes with the assembly just like this veil of smoke.
    • Finish
Final of beautiful length and very lemony. There is a mixture of bitterness and acidity on a mound of iodized and salty smoke. A weird sensation where everything mixes like an explosion of flavors.

N: That’s some complex sweet spiciness that ensues.
T: Cor blimey, thats some mouthfeel to boot - Clynelish=Brora-esque no less.
F: Mouthfeel & taste combined sensations
C: Great story & provenance behind this and an equally great whisky.

    Scores a B+

Some old Clynelish and Talisker together with 0.4% (1/250) of a three year old Clynelish that Compass Box has bought as new make and is aging on its own. The almost 10% Talisker is from a 1st fill sherry butt, and this nose thumbing expression works quite well. My full review is at: http://maltandoak.com/compass-box-three-year-old-deluxe-49-2/

A three year old whiskey, which for the most part is so much older ...

  23. Bishlouk scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

Compass Box always comes to marry the flavors so that the assembly works well. This blended malt is no exception, but ... I'm starting to find the same profiles almost every time in Compass Box products. This Three Year Old Deluxe reminds me of the Lost Blend (although more may be successful).
    • Nose
Wax, iodine, lime, and fresh apple. After a moment, a menthol ripple appears and is even in the foreground.
    • Taste
The wax remains present. Pepper iodine goes with it. White fruit syrup and a lemony acid. The texture is almost oily in the mouth.
    • Finish
Average. Menthol smoke rises in the nose. A peppery explosion invades the throat, followed by a fruity dryness.

  24. St. Pauli scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

Lovely old maritime nose: savoury and smokey, with soft damp peat, pepper, but also the youth of fresh apple, wax and herbs.

  25. Sachin scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

Typical waxy Clynelish notes with a hint of smokey sharpness coming through. That makes sense considering my analysis makes it:
    0.4% 3 year old Clynelish,
    90.3% 24 year old Clynelish,
    9.3% 20 year old Talisker.
    That's only my personal opinion ;) ;)

This Compass Box Three year old Deluxe is a whiskey that is not easy to identify. It offers us original aromas that will delight lovers in search of discoveries. John Glaser has done it again!
    • Nose
shy at first, he is more expressive after a few minutes in the glass. It's fresh, with notes of mint, green apple, anise, licorice or even antiseptic, lime, tangerine, and then the waxy side takes over, accompanied by a good dose of honey and vanilla cream. In the plant register we are more on flowers, especially orange blossom, rather than on a dry and bitter aspect. As if that was not enough, we distinguish in the background a maritime side, with salt, oysters, seaweed. It's rich and well put together, with a light peat as a spine.
    • Taste
powerful and drier than I thought. The vegetal notes are highlighted here. It is also more acidic with a nice presence of lime and tangerine. The peat brings a slight smoke that gives character to this Compass Box Three Year old Deluxe. We also find these maritime notes, probably brought by the Talisker: salt, oysters, seaweed. And then, an ounce of sweetness with notes of apples and licorice. It's very fresh, very invigorating.
    • Finish
long, intense, bitter and tart. The notes of lemon are very present and mingle perfectly with liquorice, anise, ashes and maritime notes.

    whisky.fr writes:

"Compass box presents its new limited edition; the cheeky Three Years Old Deluxe is a Blended Malt whisky composed of just

under 1% three year-old malt whisky produced near the village of Brora, a little

over 90% malt whisky of an unstated but considerably older age from the same distillery and

9% peaty malt whisky, distilled on the Isle of Skye."

I think, this has a nice +20y old profile with the characteristic of a perfect ex-bourbon cask maturation. great nose!
