A typical Talisker! Mild and maritime, fruity and earthy tart, the well-known "Chili-Catch" gives this DE a hot and piquant note. Tastes and pleases!

    22/22/22/22 (88P)
    • Nose
Intense amber shines out of the Premium Snifter, and many thick streaks stick to the glass wall. Soft peat smoke rises, maritime a subtle salty sea air comes into its own, algae and seaweed appear slightly grassy. Caramel and dried fruits mix with zest of orange peel and hints of tart citrus fruit, green apple and cream toffee end slightly earthy.
    • Taste
The first sip flows gently over the tongue, the "Chili-Catch" known for Talikser suddenly explodes on the tongue and lines the palate with white pepper and cozy warmth. Almost at the same time, the saliva begins to flow massively ... Earthy, slightly peaty with hints of wooden smoke, dark and tart wood tones, dark chocolate with oranges, hazelnuts and walnuts alternate, meanwhile the Talisker DE warms the esophagus and stomach.
    • Finish
Slightly tart, nutty with dried grapes and berries. The aftertaste is long and intense in memory, then ends with walnuts and dark earth tones.

A sweet twist on the standard 10 year old Talisker. Bottled at the same abv as usual but finished in Amoroso casks.

The nose is dark chocolate, cloves, black pepper, sweet coffee syrup, coffee liquor, dark cherry, cherry liquor and citric peel. Of course the classic maritime smoky salty notes are there but the Amoroso casks have really imparted their characters in the liquid.

The palate is raisins, apricot, blackberry, licorice, woody, spicy and smoky.

The finish is long and smoky. It's dry with sherry notes, quite warming with black berry jam and very very woody.

This is a really well done whisky. I love Talisker style anyway and this sweet version of the classic 10 is delicious.

Overall, this bottling is a bit stronger but also more unbalanced than the 2007/2017. It offers a little more smoke, but also has more fermented fruit in its aroma.
With the Talisker Distillers Edition it is important to know that the whisky in the bottle still needs a lot of time and oxygen to give a harmonious overall picture. Every time I open a new Talisker Distillers Edition, I ask myself why I liked it so much ...? And once a third of the content has been used up and the bottle has been on the shelf for a few months, I'm overwhelmed every time how delicious it has turned out, which seemed hard to imagine after opening.

Strong marine smoke. Salty sea breeze, vanilla, old wood, leather, lightly fermented apples, grapefruit, pineapple, red currants, orange juice, honey.
    • Taste

Nice and peppery to start with. Smoke, oak seasoning, fermented apples, liquorice, overripe orange, red currants, honey.
    • Finish

Medium-long finish. Vanilla, oak, apples, dark chocolate.

Aroma: open, sweet, in the foreground light sherry derivatives - dark raisins, fortified wine, berry jam, currant leaf, then a lot of wood, dry sawdust, varnished table, smoldering board, brackish-mineral, mussels, sulphurous, slightly lime. Phenols and smokiness goes completely in the background, manifested by light burning, extinct coals.

Taste: bright attack of spices, a mixture of peppers, cinnamon, a lot of orange and tangerine peel, burnt paper, pleasant wood tannins, prunes, raisins, all this is well smoked and smoked, light mineral shades, activated charcoal.

Finish: medium length, brackish, mineral, smoked dried fruit, fading spiciness and spiciness, sensation of sticky berry jam, wood tannins, oily.

    Rating: 86-87

Bottom line: a wonderful incarnation of my beloved classic 10, only a little less smoke has come out, more woody and with sweet berry jam. For me, no worse and no better than 10 of them, slightly different, smoothed by sherry.
In the bottle that was ending, and before that the smoke was not very bright, the aroma smoothed out even more and the influence of the tree intensified, with taste there were no noticeable changes.

Wood finishing can add an additional layer of complexity to a whisky, but it can also spoil the existing character of the malt. In case of Talisker Distillers Edition (2006/2016), the Amoroso finish is hitting the spot! The nose is delivering restrained bonfire smoke, brine and a lovely note of sweet BBQ sauce. On the palate, the famous 'chili catch' is less punchy as in the original, while the feast continues with salty spare ribs, sweet grapes and bitter hints of European oak. Charcoal, mild pepper and fruity sweetness remain for dessert. A fantastic Single Malt!

    Clinch

Early December I hosted a sold-out Talisker tasting in the Rolf Benz Lounge of the Ghelamco Arena, home to the AA Gent soccer team. I am happy to share my personal notes on the line-up and will start with this Distillers Edition from 2016. Thanks to the finish in an Amoroso sherry cask, it has a nice bronze color.

Wonderful nose in which sweet and salt go head to head. Sweet BBQ sauce, candied orange peel, milk chocolate and lots of honey in the left corner, while walnuts, a bonfire, salted bacon and pickles warm up in the right corner.

Surprisingly creamy body (well, Amoroso is a cream sherry) that starts off very sweet, but immediately becomes brackish with a beautiful development of smoke. Wow! Pepper, sniffing tobacco, cloves, caramel, Seville oranges, green grapes and brackish water. Oh, how it works!

The finish is wonderfully long while the smoke fades away gently, leaving charcoal and candied oranges.

What a beautiful Talisker. Smoky dessert and I love it! Not even 60 EUR? No brainer.

More complex than the 10s. Not as high a surcharge as the DE from Lagavulin. To recommend !
    • Nose
Peat smoke, maritime notes .. certain saltiness (like salty caramel) fruity aromas, maybe raspberries. Citrus .. Röstaromen .. Spices, reminiscent of speculoos. Floral influence
    • Taste
Strong start. Fruit and smoke mate on the tongue. Spiciness at the tip of the tongue. Less strong than the Talisker 10. "Chili-Catch" nevertheless noticeable.
    • Finish
medium. Seasoning lasts for a long time. The second sip of the oak comes to the fore and leaves an espresso flavor. Also to find grapes.

Not quite as convincing on the palate as previous bottlings. It looks almost a bit watery. But still very good. 86th

N- Mineral and muddy, liquorice and manure. The finishes probably have taken some of the maritime characters away a bit, with more body, caramelized dark fruits and winery characters build in, which works well and balanced.

P- Sweet malt, ginger spicy, glad with the returns hints of distant smokes, vanilla and cigar. Not with a lot of width, but able to amplified on what she has to offer and remains firm, focus and stable throughout.

F- Medium-long, smooth as silk, dried fruits bitter chocolate, pleasantly chewy. Profound at subtle way, elegant and quintessential wine cask finishes. — at The Whisky Bar, Kuala Lumpur.

  30. Marko_I did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

Indispensable standard bottling, with 50 € and more for just 10 years, he irritates the market but now well. The differences are clear: 1996 - more sherry, fruit, more elegant, rounder, more mature, 2006 - gruff, youthful, stronger, less sherry and fruit, more pepper. What can be attributed to the shorter time in the barrel, the 8 years of bottle aging and / or "production optimization", anyone can imagine for themselves.
    • Nose
      Direct comparison 1996-2008 vs. 2006-2016:
both smoky, gentler in 1996, stronger in 2006, dirty, then clear sweetness, raisins in 1996, I would even go to sweet, red grapes, altogether very velvety, the smoke becomes a hint of incense, 2006 remains rougher, the smoke dominates Sherry can only be guessed or I would have guessed by the smell blind / not recognized by a drop of water that is a little better, rosiniger, with time in the glass it is also a little milder, the smoke comes walnut, nutmeg, earth, could also be something mineral, salty
    • Taste
the smoke is gentler again in 1996, more bitter in 2006, rougher, both very oily, but in 1996 a little more, 2006 has more pepper, spiciness, the sweetness is only chocolaty, caramel, while in 1996 the fruit also comes through in the taste - smoky, slightly peppery wine gum with dark chocolate coating
    • Finish
first oily, then dry, peppery to even furry, smoky bitter, cocoa and pepper, more cocoa in 1996, more pepper in 2006
