  1. Kantenmechaniker scored this whisky 92 points Connoisseur

"Smoke + Port = Good" is a simple equation that always works for me. This Port Charlotte with 13 years full maturation is a prime example of this.
    • Nose
A super nose, wonderfully creamy, sweet, caramel, and a great fruit note, dark red overripe cherries, over all a dry camp fire smoke, which brings a good counterpart to the heavy Portweinsüße, smoked bacon, a touch of milk chocolate, the alcohol is very nicely involved,
    • Taste
very intense, strong dry cold smoke, behind it chocolate, now lighter cherries, bittersweet, espresso, not quite as sweet as the nose would expect, light acidity, nevertheless very creamy, also here without water pleasant to drink
    • Finish
some cinnamon, drier, but still creamy, the smoke fills the mouth, some caramel, dark chocolate, very pleasant long finish

Next one in a Port Charlotte sample range, purchased at the Dutch Whiskyforum.
    • Nose
      90 90
Clear Port influences rising from the glass. Combination of camp fire smoke, sweet peat and overipe fruit. Excellent combination. Given the high abv, I a surpriced that the alcohol has prominent appearance.
    • Taste
      90 90
Tremendously powerful dram. This one calls for water; more than a few drops even. Burned meat on a palate of port. Earthy and dirty; things I like in Port Charlotte. Sweet BBQ peak-smoke and again overripe fruit.
    • Finish
      89 89
Long finish. Flavors of the taste in the end turn to burned wood and sweet ash.

  10. Dre73 scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

Very powerful, balanced whisky. A spice, pepper, with some red fruits, smoke, roasted meat. From nose till finish in line. Very beautiful, grwat experience.
    • Nose
      90 90
Very intense and fruity immediately, red fruits, berries, raisins over a woodsmoky and earthy layer. Some spiciness, roasted meat.
    • Taste
      89 89
Quite powerful, pepper, blueberries, plums, rubber and smoky. Some leather, floral notes. Some pure chocolate. Spicy.
    • Finish
      90 90
More smooth now, leather, woodsmoke, earthy, berries. A touch of bitter ash. Long finish, with roasted meat and cigar tobacco.

Another happy couple! Peated laddie on Port steroids!
    • Nose
A lovely rough and farmy nose instantly! Great how the character of this whisky is still alive despite of it’s heavily port cask maturation. yellow fruits, yellow raisins, fertilizer. Iodine, hansaplast and coastal influences reveal with time in the glass. Wait even longer and Cigar leafs and cigar smoke are released. This one keeps developing and growing bigger. Fantastic stuff!
    • Taste
A full bodied flavor bomb. Quite some sweetness and creamy flavors. But...This can handle some water. At 61.7% obviously the alcohol is very prominent. After doing so I get more and more beautiful rich and mature flavors that express themselves. Polished oak, farmy leather, fertilizer and earthy flavors. Lovely deep and intense! Definitely not for the faint hearted. It’s very powerful.
    • Finish
Finish is obviously very long and gives, aside from farmy and earthy flavors, quite some yellow sweetness. Again yellow raisins, dried apricot, ripe mango wrapped in lovely coastal peat.

Probably more suitable for advanced whisky drinkers. The variety and power of flavors as well as the demanding complexity are relatively high. But it is really delicious, I have to say. Full review (german): https://keinehalbendrinks.de/2021/02/10/alle-port-charlotte-teil-4/
    • Nose
      90 90
We begin deep underground. Roots, peat, but also dry soil. Clay. Spices. In addition, a sour and slightly musty fruit note. After a while, wonderfully sweet honey is added. After another while there are fermented dark berries and smoked meat.
    • Taste
      89 89
Sweet at first, then it grabs the tongue and pinches it. A menthol note comes up. Then the earthy component comes back. In addition, coffee in different variations.
    • Finish
      88 88
Salty and bitter it comes to a medium long end. It combines the previous aromas again. At the very end it becomes extremely bitter.

  20. TheDawn scored this whisky 91 points Member Junior

I agree with the edge mechanic: smoke + port = good.
This one is much better than the Laphroaig Brodir, because it is much more intense and yet perfectly balanced.
    • Nose
Campfire smoke, smoked bacon - albeit less pronounced than, for example, with a Lagavulin.
In addition, a pleasant concentrated sweetness like a berry syrup.
    • Taste
Slightly alcoholic, peat, ash, the sweetness is more in the background. Vanilla and fruits.
    • Finish
      Long, very intense, very smoky

  21. HammerHead scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

Scoma cask 617 (sherry) vs. cask 645 (port). This nose is initially a bit shy, but balance in taste and finish push this past cask 617 overall.
    • Nose
      90 90
A sweet and sour dark fruitiness, some greasy smoke, cherries, red currants, a slight hint of rubber, some sour pickles, piccalilly, dark chocolate, mild nuttiness and slightly meaty. At the back even some cinnamon.
    • Taste
      90 90
Sweet and syrupy, dark cherries, red apple, currants, forest fruits, raisins, only mild smokiness, cocoa and a bunch of peppery spices (chili's, jalapeño's). Well balanced.
    • Finish
      89 89
Very long: sweet fruits, sour apple (juice), liquorice, espresso and dusty cocoa charred and peppery wood notes.

a very intense malt in the aromas, the high alcohol content is surprisingly well integrated and is only noticeable in the mouth for a short time. Extremely tasty.
    • Nose
nice, sweet smoke, alcohol is well integrated, dried fruits, nice port notes, later intense campfire smoke, ash,
    • Taste
At first there was a lot of ash and campfire smoke, then it became fruity with the dried fruits on the nose, a bit spicy, red wine notes came through easily.
    • Finish
intense finish, smoky red wine I would say. Very long, has a bit of incense, becomes slightly bitter

    • Nose
Significant cold smoke, slightly musty, wood, dried and partly burnt herbs, lemon, I don't find the alcohol that pungent, pine needles, it comes from a portcask - there is also something really dark and fruity, I think that's rather n Tawny as a ruby was, dried fruit, old wood, herb honey, anise
    • Taste
Honey, some apple, herb candy, lemon, grapefruit, wood, nuts, pepper, smoke and ash

Ok water was a bad idea. In my opinion, he loses in all aspects.

Port Charlotte like it should be! The Port cask gives him a nice roundness and evens the edges but he remains powerful enough to hit you with that open door of the cow shed right in your face! The nose has caramel and honied ham, the mouth lots of caramel more bacon and a nice sweetness. The finish is long and nicely salty. Would definitely love to drink more than a dram

    Thanks Grinface for the sample

Lots of smoke and peat, definitely a PC. I'm not very keen on port casks, but this one adds a nice touch of sweetness and is certainly one to savour. It might be a bit one-dimensional (which suits me sometimes), but one has to expect it, considering this amount of smoke and peat.

  41. gallfux did not rate this whisky Expert Senior

I like that. I also like Port Charlotte very much. The stand-alone Port Charlotte Rauch, which of course you have to like (I like that), is a bit less extroverted than many other bottlings.
    • Nose
Aroniahonig. The barrel brings red fruit. Sour cherries. Strawberries. Raspberry jam on very dark toast. Rose hip. With smoked bacon and smoked cheese. Campfire smoke. In addition, a spice that reminds me of nutmeg. There is hardly anything to feel about the alcohol.
    • Taste
Sugared fruit tea. The red fruits are now a bit sour. Red currant. Sloe. In the mouth you can already notice the high alcohol strength. The smoke is now becoming moister and floral. Now a mouthfeel like a dry red wine.
    • Finish
      Implied frankincense. Tobacco. Black tea.

Clear cowshed! Both in smell and in taste ("typical Laddie"). Not very complex. Very strong. Smoky-fruity-delicate, while very warm. Pretty cute. Kuhstall plus fruit and smoke is something of a kind of "smoked fruit bacon" (whatever that is ... there's only on Alpha Centauri ;-)). Unfortunately a little one-dimensional. Absolutely no high-flyer. Price therefore much too high, 190 euros ?? 80 euros would be a barely acceptable price.
PS: "Presentation = 100" is only to adjust the overall value to 87 points (as I want to rate for nose and button, only, not for the price).

Smell: spicy, pastry, sweet smoke, very pleasantly aromatic, smokehouse, smoked ham.

Taste: very malty sweet and smoky, great balanced combination, a touch of dark chocolate, ham, pears,

Finish: long sweet smoky, prunes from the roast goose, wonderful, fits perfectly for the pre-Christmas season

Verdict: great successful whisky with power and balance despite the youth and the barrel strength, absolute recommendation of Port Charlotte is still a lot to be expected, as here plays the barrel. 91P

Notes of a blind tasting: The (almost) perfect smoker.
Tip: Port Charlotte from a red wine barrel.
    => 92/100
    • Nose
First comes a great Port Charlotte-like smoke in the nose. Then, notes of strawberries and grapes and a sea breeze crystallize out. Poorly cool with a subtle acidity in the background.
    • Taste
Fruity chestnut-like smoke lounged with fruit compote. Occupies very strong the palate.
    • Finish
Very long and slightly burning, ashes, bitter at the very end.

An excellent Port Charlotte which is of course quite expensive for 13 years (190€ - 10/2016) but also giving a lot back. Glad that I had the possibility to buy and share it during the Cutty community. Well done Scoma!
    • Nose
What a nose! It is incredible how nice the alcoholis implemented and the fruity port sweetness is accord with the Port Charlotte smoke. I can agree with Kantenmechaniker as I have cherry, smoke, chocolate, fire and bacon. On top a bit of rubber and fermented grapes. One of the best noses I have had in this combination but you also realise that it is a young dram which isn't annoying, just to be clear.
    • Taste
More cherry, more sweetness for me sweeter as expected in the nose. A bit sour and of course smoke after some seconds but alcohol still well implemented. No water needed from my point of view!
    • Finish
Very dry and sour (apple rings? :-) ) finish with cocoa powder and a bit Espresso. Although it is the worst part of the dram it is still good :-)
