Whisky Reviews for Port Charlotte 2003 Gs

21 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 89.79 points

"Smoke + Port = Good" is a simple equation that always works for me. This Port Charlotte with 13 years full maturation is a prime example of this.
    • Nose
A super nose, wonderfully creamy, sweet, caramel, and a great fruit note, dark red overripe cherries, over all a dry camp fire smoke, which brings a good counterpart to the heavy Portweinsüße, smoked bacon, a touch of milk chocolate, the alcohol is very nicely involved,
    • Taste
very intense, strong dry cold smoke, behind it chocolate, now lighter cherries, bittersweet, espresso, not quite as sweet as the nose would expect, light acidity, nevertheless very creamy, also here without water pleasant to drink
    • Finish
some cinnamon, drier, but still creamy, the smoke fills the mouth, some caramel, dark chocolate, very pleasant long finish

Clear cowshed! Both in smell and in taste ("typical Laddie"). Not very complex. Very strong. Smoky-fruity-delicate, while very warm. Pretty cute. Kuhstall plus fruit and smoke is something of a kind of "smoked fruit bacon" (whatever that is ... there's only on Alpha Centauri ;-)). Unfortunately a little one-dimensional. Absolutely no high-flyer. Price therefore much too high, 190 euros ?? 80 euros would be a barely acceptable price.
PS: "Presentation = 100" is only to adjust the overall value to 87 points (as I want to rate for nose and button, only, not for the price).

Smell: spicy, pastry, sweet smoke, very pleasantly aromatic, smokehouse, smoked ham.

Taste: very malty sweet and smoky, great balanced combination, a touch of dark chocolate, ham, pears,

Finish: long sweet smoky, prunes from the roast goose, wonderful, fits perfectly for the pre-Christmas season

Verdict: great successful whisky with power and balance despite the youth and the barrel strength, absolute recommendation of Port Charlotte is still a lot to be expected, as here plays the barrel. 91P

Notes of a blind tasting: The (almost) perfect smoker.
Tip: Port Charlotte from a red wine barrel.
    => 92/100
    • Nose
First comes a great Port Charlotte-like smoke in the nose. Then, notes of strawberries and grapes and a sea breeze crystallize out. Poorly cool with a subtle acidity in the background.
    • Taste
Fruity chestnut-like smoke lounged with fruit compote. Occupies very strong the palate.
    • Finish
Very long and slightly burning, ashes, bitter at the very end.

An excellent Port Charlotte which is of course quite expensive for 13 years (190€ - 10/2016) but also giving a lot back. Glad that I had the possibility to buy and share it during the Cutty community. Well done Scoma!
    • Nose
What a nose! It is incredible how nice the alcoholis implemented and the fruity port sweetness is accord with the Port Charlotte smoke. I can agree with Kantenmechaniker as I have cherry, smoke, chocolate, fire and bacon. On top a bit of rubber and fermented grapes. One of the best noses I have had in this combination but you also realise that it is a young dram which isn't annoying, just to be clear.
    • Taste
More cherry, more sweetness for me sweeter as expected in the nose. A bit sour and of course smoke after some seconds but alcohol still well implemented. No water needed from my point of view!
    • Finish
Very dry and sour (apple rings? :-) ) finish with cocoa powder and a bit Espresso. Although it is the worst part of the dram it is still good :-)

Note to self: great whisky, but I still don’t really like peat

Lots of smoke and peat, definitely a PC. I'm not very keen on port casks, but this one adds a nice touch of sweetness and is certainly one to savour. It might be a bit one-dimensional (which suits me sometimes), but one has to expect it, considering this amount of smoke and peat.

I like that. I also like Port Charlotte very much. The stand-alone Port Charlotte Rauch, which of course you have to like (I like that), is a bit less extroverted than many other bottlings.
    • Nose
Aroniahonig. The barrel brings red fruit. Sour cherries. Strawberries. Raspberry jam on very dark toast. Rose hip. With smoked bacon and smoked cheese. Campfire smoke. In addition, a spice that reminds me of nutmeg. There is hardly anything to feel about the alcohol.
    • Taste
Sugared fruit tea. The red fruits are now a bit sour. Red currant. Sloe. In the mouth you can already notice the high alcohol strength. The smoke is now becoming moister and floral. Now a mouthfeel like a dry red wine.
    • Finish
      Implied frankincense. Tobacco. Black tea.
