Islay's youngest distillery (ESTḌ 2005) presents its 'Machir Bay' NAS expression with 46% ABV, natural color and non-chill filtered. Fairly simple on the nose, you get earthy, dusty peat smoke with lime juice and honey. The arrival is fresh, slightly spirity but well-composed with sweet spices, dry peatiness and some salted peanuts. Tasting briny, peppery and aromatic in the development, the finish is clean with slowly fading notes of dark chocolate and smoked ham. Kilchoman is definitely getting there, though rather expensive for such a young whisky.

Dry, chalky, peat and vanilla, various herbs.

      Bitter, more peat and chalk.
    • Finish
Rather short, still bitter on mineral peat.

    • Nose
Real salty peat wind. Open sea, waves, storm. Very young peat, little wood influence. Seaweed, the fish are flying around the ears in this sea breeze. Jacket is waving in the strong wind.
    • Taste
      Salty
    • Finish
What a whisky of seawater. Very nice salty, slightly smoky. Young peat, keep influence

a very fine, young whisky, mostly spirit driven but it's already showing a lovely complexity for its young age (somewhere between 4 and 6 years I reckon). adding water has an influence on the nose and palate, but it doesn't necessarily improves it...  84 - 85 points
    • Nose
smokey, medicinal, some iodine, peat, licorice, caramelized brown sugar. with some water: the smoke and peat diminish, sweet fruit rises to the surface
    • Taste
smoke, oil, sweet (red) fruit, a hint of vanilla in the back. with water: more emphasis on the sweet (red) fruit and surprisingly salty
    • Finish
medium long, oily, a bit of heath. adding water makes the salty tones linger on, but has little impact on the heat

What's there is quite delicious. But it's not enough to grant it a very good rating above 85. For what this Kilchoman is offering I find the price tag quite hefty too. I mean, I could spend 10 quid less and get a Laphroaig 10 or a "Six Isles" or a Finlaggan - all playing in the same league. I've got an affinity for the farm distillery philosophy at Kilchoman, but I'd rather save my money for the fabulous Loch Gorm.
    • Nose
Clean, peaty, smoky, young. Burning grass, slightly medicinal. Salted lemons, crispy citrussy barley and liquorice. Soft heather honey note and salty and sour brine. Simple but pleasant.
    • Taste
Good attack, but not very full. Quite alcoholic. Flavourwise it gets thinner in the development. Salty and peaty, medicinal and mentholy. Again, simple and far from complex, maybe a bit too young too, but it's not a bad whisky at all.
    • Finish
Medium to short, leaves the mouth cool and fresh though, sweet and grassy peat in the aftertaste.

Not my kind of whisky, Oloroso I feel here 0, vllt. it just made the whole thing a bit gentler, which then came towards me. Definitely not a bad whisky, but also not a very good one.
    • Nose
Clear peat notes with coastal air, citrus, lime, some vanilla and toffee in between, light honey with heather and a metallic, young note in the background
    • Taste
Full, slightly oily entry, honey with herbs, vanilla, peat (but nice medium, not like me disagreeable Ardbeg), brine, a bit bitter young oak,
    • Finish
Medium long, salty citrusy, ok but absolutely nothing special

    Nose:-
Beautiful floral, refreshing orchid garden. Good weight with substance.
Soft caramel (butterscotch?) and strawberry compote, with a refreshing
grapefruit zest slit thru them seemlessly. Water drawn out nuttiness.

Palate:- Poached berry fruits, citrusy and restrained sweetness, natural and gentle. Mellow and elegant. Balance. Finish:- Frizzy and soda dry entry. Medium length with dusting sugar
coated nutmeg bitterness. Interesting oak spiciness develop slowly on
    the palate, chewy. Smooth.

A very good 15YO dram, taste older and refine than it is.
